What are the 3 types of rum?
Rum is actually a tiny word to describe such a vast spirit category, and while
industry practice commonly sees it habitually placed into three main categories
(white, gold, and dark) plus the additional side category of spiced rum, each of
these can cover a huge array of styles and production techniques. In some
instances, colouring and filtration enable producers to either add or remove
colour from the final spirit, so the colour of the rum by no means indicates its
age or lack of. The liquid may look the same inside the bottle, but distilling
from molasses versus sugarcane juice achieves widely different styles, as you
can discover when comparing spirits such as Cachaça and Rhum Agricole (both made
from raw sugarcane) to Cuban or Caribbean rums distilled from molasses.
Which rum is best?
We can't answer that! There are so many exquisite rums to explore, whether
you're looking for the silky smoothness of something column distilled, or a
punchy, fruity pot still number, a crisp white rum for the foundation of
cocktails, or a splendidly aged and characterful sipper. Fancy something
different from molasses based rums? Check out Rhum Agricole for sugar cane-based
funk, or discover a host of cleverly tweaked recipes among the spiced rum
selection.
How do you drink rum?
Remember how we said rum is versatile? Well, the ways to serve it are even more
endless! There are plenty of characterful rums that speak for themselves in
spirit-forward cocktails like a Rum Old Fashioned, or simply poured into a
glass, with ice if you wish. Remember, limes are rum's friend – if you're
thinking a squeeze of citrus would help your serve then a lime will beat a lemon
in most instances when it comes to rum. Stick some lime in your Rum & Coke, and
you've in fact graduated to being a cocktail maestro, as you've gone and made a
Cuba Libre! Mojitos, Mai Tais, Piña Coladas, and classic Rum Punches are all
tremendously tropical options, while we've got a particular soft spot for
Brazilian Cachaça, served in a Caipirinha. If that all sounds too fancy, a good
soda or fruit juice will always work a treat for a quick, and tasty serve.
