COURSE AIMS

Face to Face Live Training

In a classroom environment consisting of:

 * Instructor led training

Individual and group activities:

 * Identify wheel information
 * Case study - carrying out a task safely

Practical Assessment

Individual assessment activities with explanation of pass requirements:

 * Safe fitting of abrasive wheels

Concluding with post theory test consisting of 20 multiple choice questions. 80%
pass mark.

Award

On successful completion of the course, delegates are issued with a certificate
accredited by City & Guilds valid for three years. They then need to undertake a
further course to obtain another three-year certificate.

Failure Procedure

Delegates who don't achieve the minimum theoretical and/or practical assessment
requirements will have the opportunity to resit these on another day.

Duration

Minimum contact time: 1/2 day, lasting a minimum of 4 hours.

Aim

This course is designed to provide the necessary knowledge and skills required
to demonstrate the selection and safe fitting of abrasive wheels in accordance
with manufacturer’s guidance and current legislation.

Objectives

This course is aimed at those who are required to operate angle grinders (fitted
with cutting or grinding wheels), cut-off saws and bench top cut-off saws as
part of their daily work activities.

 * Legislation, regulations and guidance
 * Duties of the employer and the employee
 * Abrasive wheel specification & marking system
 * Wheel & blade spindle speeds
 * Mounting a wheel 
 * Inspection, storage & transportation
 * Equipment safety - damaged or faulty wheels and equipment
 * Effects on health:
   * Silica awareness and risks
   * Hand-arm vibration
 * Control measures - PPE and RPE, hazard awareness

Theory Test

Individual written test with explanation of pass requirements.

Practical Assessment

Individual assessment activities.

CITB Short Course Duration Grant

Information for Employers

HSS Training is an Approved Training Organisation (ATO) with CITB, allowing our
customers to claim grants for completing training on our registered courses. 
The CITB levy and grants scheme has been introduced to ensure the UK
construction industry has the skilled workforce that it needs; providing grants
for employers to train their workers. This helps to maintain health & safety
standards on construction sites, keeping the right skills available for the
industry to grow. In turn this will allow projects to be completed on time and
within budget, in a safe and sustainable manner.

How much is the Grant?

The grant rates are split into three tiers, determined by the duration and
content of the course.

•Tier 1 = £30

•Tier 2 = £70

directory. Grants are paid once for each individual per course, with the
exception of a renewal or refresher course.

Which courses are covered?

As a CITB accredited ATO, HSS Training has 20+ courses registered under the CITB
Short Course Duration Grant.  Short duration courses last from 3 hours to 29
days, focusing on the core construction skills needed across the industry.

Directory.

• Assured Products - courses delivered to an agreed industry standard

• Recognised Products - an approved standard by a relevant awarding body that is
widely accepted by the industry i.e. IPAF, PASMA, Ladder Association

• CITB - relating to the Site Safety Plus courses

How do I claim?

Q. What do I need to do as the employer?
A. Simply book your employee onto their required course (our full open schedule
is available on the HSS Training website) and provide us with the following
details: Delegate name, DOB, Address, NI Number and the Employer CITB Levy
Number.

Q. How do I make a claim?
A. We will do everything for you. Because HSS Training is an ATO with CITB,
following your employees successful completion of their course we will update
the  construction Training Register and you will automatically receive the
payment.

Q. How will I receive the payment?
A. Grants can only be paid back via bank transfer, so ensure that CITB hold your
current bank details - you can do this through their secure online Bacs Direct
Credit Authorisation Form.

Who can claim?

Any Employer can claim who has registered with CITB and meets their general
grants scheme eligibility requirements. Short Duration grants are available to
all directly employed Pay As You Earn (PAYE) staff and sub-contractors.

Note – grants are not paid to individual employees.

Eligibility Requirements

Employers are able to claim grants if they have sent a Levy Return to CITB by
30th November each year (where applicable).

calculated for a company.

ON THE DAY

PPE

Delegates are required to wear the following minimum PPE:

 * Hi-vis vest / jacket
 * Protective gloves
 * Safety foot wear





All the PPE listed above are mandatory requirements. Please do not attend the
course without the required PPE. If you need assistance in sourcing PPE prior to
your training, please contact our team on 0345 605 0006.




NOTE: Delegates who are not in possession of their own PPE or who refuse to wear
additional PPE will not be allowed to commence / continue training.

Delegates must have a good understanding of spoken and written English. Any
problems with literacy or language comprehension should be declared at least 24
hours prior to the course.

This need not preclude attendance to the course, provisions can be arranged
provided we can assess the delegates' needs. These will need to be authorised
prior to the course by the accreditation.

Qualifications and Experience

No formal qualifications or experience are necessary.

Delegates are required to bring:

All delegates must bring photographic identification to the course, such as a
passport, driving licence, or work ID. You will not be permitted to sit your
exam without photographic proof of ID. If you have any concerns or queries,
please contact us before your course.

Onsite Requirements

Please ensure all below points are reviewed and completed prior to the course
start date.  There is an additional checklist under the Facilities and
Equipment tab covering all requirements relating to Theory Room, Practical
Training Area and Equipment - please also ensure these specifications are met
and actioned as necessary in advance of your training event.  This
is essential for HSS to carry out training at your site.  

 ActionCompleted1.Parking area for instructor close to the training
venue. 2.Where appropriate, site specific Risk Assessments and Method Statements
(RAMS) must be provided for review by the trainer in advance of any planned
training or be readily available for the trainer to review on their arrival on
the first day. If site requirements require trainer RAMS this must be
communicated to HSS Training no more than 5 working days in advance of the event
start date or at point of booking confirmation if the event start date is inside
this window. 3.Site induction prior to training which will include First Aid
provision and Emergency Fire procedures. Any site specific induction required
must be communicated upon course booking to allow the instructor to be notified
to limit the impact on the course start time. 4.All delegates should have
appropriate and adequate PPE for the site. If site rules dictate specific PPE
standard hard hat, high-vis jacket & safety boots or other items, these must be
made available for use by the trainer. 5.Delegates must receive adequate
information from their employer on course requirements including any additional
out of hours work or study and be notified of course start and finish
times. 6.Delegates ID to be either available or to be sent to HSS prior to
course. 7.All notes above are subject to a site risk assessment carried out by
the trainer with particular reference to the ground conditions and practical
training area. Whilst we endeavour to work with sites to ensure that training is
carried out, if the area of operations is deemed unsuitable by the trainer then
we cannot be held responsible for the cancellation/postponement of the event at
the customer’s cost. 8.Any site specific requirements such as site inductions
should be communicated to HSS Training at least a week in advance of the event.
In circumstances of events being booked with a lead time of less than a week
these requirements should be communicated upon receipt of these Joining
Instructions. 

 

This attracts a CITB Short Course Duration Grant at Tier 1, with a value of

Face to Face Live Training

In a classroom environment consisting of:

 * Instructor led training

Individual and group activities:

 * Identify wheel information
 * Case study - carrying out a task safely

Practical Assessment

Individual assessment activities with explanation of pass requirements:

 * Safe fitting of abrasive wheels

Concluding with post theory test consisting of 20 multiple choice questions. 80%
pass mark.

Award

On successful completion of the course, delegates are issued with a certificate
accredited by City & Guilds valid for three years. They then need to undertake a
further course to obtain another three-year certificate.

Failure Procedure

Delegates who don't achieve the minimum theoretical and/or practical assessment
requirements will have the opportunity to resit these on another day.

Duration

Minimum contact time: 1/2 day, lasting a minimum of 4 hours.

Aim

This course is designed to provide the necessary knowledge and skills required
to demonstrate the selection and safe fitting of abrasive wheels in accordance
with manufacturer’s guidance and current legislation.

Objectives

This course is aimed at those who are required to operate angle grinders (fitted
with cutting or grinding wheels), cut-off saws and bench top cut-off saws as
part of their daily work activities.

Theory

 * Legislation, regulations and guidance
 * Duties of the employer and the employee
 * Abrasive wheel specification & marking system
 * Wheel & blade spindle speeds
 * Mounting a wheel 
 * Inspection, storage & transportation
 * Equipment safety - damaged or faulty wheels and equipment
 * Effects on health:
   * Silica awareness and risks
   * Hand-arm vibration
 * Control measures - PPE and RPE, hazard awareness

Theory Test

Individual written test with explanation of pass requirements.

Practical Assessment

Individual assessment activities.

Course Evaluation

Course evaluation and close.
