2023 LEGION CHRISTMAS NATIVITY SCENES

January 6, 2024 · Posted in 2reg, 2rei, 2rep, 3rei, grle, legion

For the French Foreign Legion, seen as a traditional pro-Catholic institution in
France (unlike the rest of the French Army), Christmas Eve marks the second most
important holiday. To celebrate it, legionnaires in all units of the Foreign
Legion – regardless of their origin and religious – create nativity scenes
(crèches) every year and compete to see which one is the nicest and most
original. The scenes can be small, static ones, or performed live with hand-made
scenery. This long-standing Legion tradition is unique within the French Army.
If you are interested, see some of the nativity scenes created by legionnaires

BORN

December 17, 2023 · Posted in 2bep, history, indochina

75 years ago, in late 1948, another airborne unit of the Foreign Legion was
officially activated in France’s North Africa. Like its older sister unit, even
the new one was to take part in the First Indochina War (1946-1954) in Southeast
Asia. It would distinguish itself and become the most decorated French Army
battalion to have fought there. Subsequently, back in North Africa, the unit
transformed into a regiment, which would later be known as one of the best
trained and action-ready operational formations in the world.
