MUSIC FOR MENTAL HEALTH

MUSIC FOR MENTAL HEALTH

Print

Throughout history, musicians have turned personal experiences into songs.
UNC-Chapel Hill music professor Mark Katz explains that when life gets
difficult, music isn’t a luxury, but a tool for survival. Alex Kresovich, a
doctoral student at the school, agrees. His conversation with a friend led to a
research project that he’s hoping will shake up the mental health world.

The Research Project
One day, while Kresovich and a friend were listening to the song “Tunnel Vision”
by rapper Kodak Black, the friend shared a story. He said he’d been listening to
the song previously, and it dawned on him while paying attention to the lyrics
that he needed professional help. He was anxious and hadn’t realized it. But
after hearing the lyrics, it all made sense.

Kresovich was inspired. So, he decided to study the lyrics in rap music, looking
specifically for references to mental health, depression, anxiety, and suicidal
thoughts. He discovered that over two decades, from 1998 to 2018, the references
to mental health in rap music had doubled. Kresovich’s goal? He wanted to use
his research to lift up these influential rappers as role models to help spread
awareness, decrease the stigma, and encourage treatment.

Mental health in the workplace is top of the mind for many business leaders,
according to a survey done by Paycor, an HR software firm. But about half of the
executives said they were uncertain what benefits they could offer to help.
Paycor suggests organizations create employee resource groups dedicated to
mental health where employees have a safe space to share experiences.

Just Because It’s Interesting: Sea shanties, old work songs sung by sailors and
boat workers to coordinate tasks, have taken over social media after a series of
viral TikTok videos. The shanties have been around for hundreds of years and
helped sailors synchronize movements for weighing anchor, hoisting sales, and
unloading cargo. TikTokers recorded themselves singing these shanties with
strangers, and these videos have provided a sense of togetherness in an age
where that's not always the case.
