WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT PHISHING AND QR CODES Be on the lookout for a new phishing campaign leveraging QR codes. A recent phish targeting the finance industry uses QR codes to evade technical controls. The email urges the recipient to scan the QR code to view an important SharePoint document, but embedded in the code is a hidden URL. If the recipient scans the QR code, they are directed to a fake SharePoint login page designed to steal credentials. By enticing the target to pull out their smartphone and scan the QR code, the attacker manages to evade standard corporate security controls. Will QR codes be a common phishing tactic of the future? Only time will tell. In the meantime, be alert for this type of phishing email. SEE AN EXAMPLE OF THIS PHISHING EMAIL BELOW.
