JAMIE MEEHAN CLUSTER MANAGER - IDEAM "CLUSTERS AND INDUSTRIAL TRANSFORMATION" Speaker Bio Synopsis Dr. Jamie Meehan, Cluster Manager, IDEAM Cluster has worked with cluster associations, organisations and research centres for over 10 years and forms part of the first-ever EU Cluster Acceleration Programme (theCAP). Jamie holds a PhD in Clusters and Regional Development and has a strong record in novel cluster contributions and publications. He is the Cluster Manager of IDEAM (Irish Digital Engineering and Advanced Manufacturing) Cluster which is an innovative national industry cluster located in the heart of the Mid-West region supporting businesses to collaborate, innovate and grow. IDEAM assists manufacturing SMEs in digital transformation, Industry 4.0 and our core aim is to unlock new opportunities for industry by working collectively. IDEAM brings together industry, academia and government to represent the needs of the digital engineering and advanced manufacturing ecosystem in Ireland. Industry growth is at the pinnacle of what the cluster strives to improve. Jamie has been the PI and project lead for various regional, national and international funding projects namely, RTCF Enterprise Ireland, Interreg Europe, Erasmus+, Interreg Atlantic Area and Horizon2020 to the value of over €6,000,000. 'Not every region can build a Silicon Valley model - focus on regional strengths'. Jamie has been involved in various regional, national and international funding projects namely, Interreg Europe, Erasmus+, Interreg Atlantic Area and Horizon2020 to the value of over €6,000,000. Moreover, he has been the project lead for several EU-projects, managing large project budgets and forms part of the first-ever EU Cluster Acceleration Programme (theCAP). Jamie was a lecturer for over 6 years in the areas of entrepreneurship and digital marketing and has been involved in EU projects for over 10 years now. Jamie has worked with international cluster organisations through extensive research studies to analyse the viability and capability of clusters and how they can prosper. Europe is home to some 3,000 industry clusters, i.e. statistically defined regional concentrations of traded industries that have more than 500 employees in a specific industry. Economic activities that are located in industry clusters account for about 19% of European jobs and 22% of European wages. Clusters represent the innovation power in the business support eco-system. We must have an international outlook and promote cooperation on innovation across borders. When this happens cross-cutting innovation changes and potential new opportunities arise. Ireland has the world-class potential and key ingredients needed to become an ‘Advanced Manufacturing and Digital Transformation’ centre of excellence and IDEAM is striving to support this agenda. Not every region can build a Silicon Valley type cluster business model - focus on regional strengths and competencies. MARC O'REGAN TECHNOLOGIST & CTO EMEA - DELL TECHNOLOGIES "THE APPLIED ECOSYSTEM OF IIOT & EMERGING EDGE ARCHITECTURE - SMART MANUFACTURING IN THE DATA ERA: BUILDING AN OPEN AI CAPABILITY ALIGNED TO THRIVE IN THE EDGE ECOSYSTEM" Speaker Bio Synopsis Marc is a passionate believer in Technology and how we can work together as an industry to better enhance and empower every person and organization in the world to achieve more. Marc is the CTO for Dell Technologies EMEA & has over 20 years’ experience in Technology, starting his career at Dell Technologies in 1999 where he spent sixteen and a half years specializing in various Technology domains including Cloud, Data Analytics and High Performance Computing. During his career at Dell Technologies Marc successfully lead the Cloud and Compute Specialist Practice for Dell UK & Ireland, helping to architect, design and develop compute and Cloud solutions, while also leading the Enterprise Architect community for EMEA. Marc has also notably contributed significantly to Public Cloud build outs including Microsoft Azure and Amazon Web Services as well as some of the most significant HPC and Supercomputing Clusters on the continent of Europe. Marc is also a recognized leader within the Cloud and Grid communities and is a regular keynote speaker and contributor of articles on the subjects of Cloud, Modern Analytics, IoT and HPC. Marc is a graduate of Trinity College Dublin and lives with his wife and two girls in Wicklow, Ireland. Industrial Internet of Things motions to the extension and use of IoT in industrial sectors and applications. With a strong focus on machine-to-machine (M2M) communication, big data, and machine learning, the IIoT enables industries and enterprises to have better efficiency and reliability in their operations. At Dell Technologies we define the Edge as wherever the physical world and the digital world intersect, where data is generated, collected, and processed to create new value. Emerging trends will disrupt entire industries and as we democratize Technology and advances in silicon enable higher performance and lower power draw from smaller form-factors, more functionalities that were traditionally tied to wire or a central location is now decentralized and wireless and driven by Data. This requires collaboration, consistency in service and standards, collection, normalization visualization and analysis of Data and all in a chaotic ecosystem that is natively disaggregated and disconnected. Connectivity and integration are the steppingstones to powering new services through new apps at the edge and driving these functions through the collection of intelligence in near real time. The direction of cloud is Native, and its destination is Edge – We are now preparing for Edge Native capabilities, to take something new and modern and connect it to something archaic and proprietary. During this session, Marc will talk to Modern Analytics, Functions of Artificial Intelligence and the Management, flow and analysis of Data as it moves through the ecosystem and the architecture and the infrastructure and application layers appropriate to Modern Analytics and information extraction SEAN GILMOUR DIRECTOR - PUBBLE HILL "HOW TO COMPETE WITH CHINA THROUGH VOLUME MANUFACTURING." Speaker Bio Synopsis Sean has over 20 years engineering experience developing and successfully releasing products of many different types. Sean is currently CEO of Pubble Hill, a company dedicated to leading edge automated manufacturing test for electronic systems. Many people believe that its game over when competing with China. China can apparently build products at a much lower cost that any companies based in Europe. How is it possible for Chinese companies to manufacture products at prices that Irish companies can’t compete with? This presentation will show some of the techniques China uses to reduce costs and how Irish companies can do the same and compete effectively against China.
