Church History

The Congregational Story

The year 1881 saw the beginning of the Congregational Church of Antigo.  A small
group met at the home of B. F. Dorr to discuss organizing a church.  On
September 17th, 1882 the new church was dedicated with Deacon J. Tibbits as
preacher and acting pastor.  The pipe organ was installed in 1915.  Musical
appreciation and activites have always been an integral part of the tradition in
this church.  Between 1908 and 1912 the church was enlarged, church school rooms
added and the basement made larger and a modern kitchen installed. 

 

The Unity Story

Unity Church was formally organized in 1890.  The following year work was
complete on a modest building first used as a church, later as a parsonage and
finally made into a parish hall.  A new house of worship was constructed in
1897.  In 1957 the E/R Church united with the Congregational Churches to form
the United Church of Christ.

 

Faith United Church of Christ

Faith United Church of Christ came into being in 1971 with the merger of Unity
Evangelical Refromed UCC Church and The Congregational Church.  This new
congrgation voted to worship in the former Congregational house of worship. 
Many of the Unity Church accoutrements grace Faith UCC.  The alter is located in
Faith's Chapel and the electric candelabras are used during the Advent and
Christmas seasons.  In 1974 Faith purchased a parsonage next to the church and
also inheried the Latta property.  The parsonage has since been removed and the
Latta propery sold.  An addition and elevator were added in the late 80's
providing access to three levels; the entrance, santuary, offices and
classrooms, and the basement.  In the basement area are the handicap accessible
restrooms, kitchen, and Pilgrim Hall.  After the elevator was installed it
became the vision of the church to provide a food pantry for the community.  The
food pantry is still housed at Faith but is now a community entity.  In 2001 the
pipe organ was totally refurbished enhancing the musical tradition of the
church.
