Whether you’re new to the holiday, have been celebrating for years, or fall
somewhere in between, now is a great time to brush up on the history of
Juneteenth.

Falling on the nineteenth of June each year, Juneteenth commemorates the end of
slavery in the United States, specifically the day when Union soldiers arrived
in Galveston, Texas. As the state had been largely unaffected by fighting during
the Civil War, slavery within it had continued unchecked. But with Union General
Gordon Granger and his troop’s appearance and his reading of General Orders No.
3, the state’s 250,000 enslaved people were declared free. The day came a full
two and a half years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation, which
was intended to be the culmination of a long road of brutality.

The Emancipation Proclamation
Issued by President Abraham Lincoln on January 1st, 1863, the Emancipation
Proclamation established that all enslaved people in the Confederate states,
which were in rebellion against the Union, “shall be then, thenceforth, and
forever free.”

Despite its wording, the Emancipation Proclamation didn’t instantly free anyone.
In fact, it only referred to areas under Confederate control and did not include
slave-holding border states.

Juneteenth and Texas
Far from the battlefields of the rest of the south, Texas was viewed as a “safe
haven” by slaveholders outside of the state, with many of them moving there. And
though Granger’s news was supposed to issue freedom, it did not come to all
overnight. Despite the complications and continued subjugation of many, newly
freed Black people celebrated this shift. The following year, freedmen in Texas
organized “Jubilee Day” on June 19th, and the tradition eventually spread across
the nation, becoming the commemorative holiday it is today. Texas also became
the first state to make Juneteenth an official holiday in 1980.

Watch: Learn about the history of Juneteenth, its continued importance, and why
it matters more than ever, thanks to this video from ABC7 News Bay Area.
