MIXES COURTESY OF DJ OMAR SANTANA

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

OMAR SANTANA

H2ohRecords.com You can purchase Omar Santanas tracks on itunes.com and
beatport.com. This tale from the hardside, begins back in the early '80's in the
metropolis that we know as New York City.  John "Jellybean" Benitez's residency
at The Funhouse Club in Manhattan had fulfilled the job of inspiring a whole new
generation to take the sound of dance music well into the future and beyond.
One of these disciples went by the name of Omar Santana. Straight outta the
borough of Queens in New York, Omar slowly began to make a name for himself by
DJ'ing as part of the Dynamic Rockers crew, putting on jams, sound-battles and
creating a solid underground vibe to rock the city with. Through this, Omar
started linking up with likes of Arthur Baker as well as the Tommy Boy and
Sleeping Bag Records camps.

This led on to much studio action as he started producing in a big way and
during the '80's worked alongside some of the true sound pioneers like
Mantronix, Boogie Boys, T la Rock and Stetsasonic.  The man was now on a proper
roll and going from strength to strength by editing and remixing such artists as
Public Enemy, Janet Jackson, Simply Red, Quincy Jones and The Rolling Stones.
The list is endless... Omar was in serious demand and very quickly became known
as one of the "Editing Kings" who would consequently stand the test of time as
an inspiration for all future warriors in the trade of cut-up beats and sound.
The time had come for Omar to create an outlet for his material, so H2oh
Recordings the came into being, releasing it's own brand of Hardcore Flava, the
label built up a strong reputation for itself and such was it's success that a
sister label by name of Tricked Out Recordings was brought into operation to
concentrate and add even greater ammunition to the audio warfare in beats that
was going on inside his head by setting the agenda for the Hard Hop/breaks
sounds in America.

REMEMBERING AN ICONIC NIGHTCLUB IN NEW YORK

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

STUDIO 54

Studio 54 is a Broadway theatre and a former disco nightclub located on 54th
Street in Midtown Manhattan, New York City. The building opened in 1927 as the
Gallo Opera House. It operated as an entertainment venue under various names
until 1942, when CBS began using it as a radio and television studio dubbed
Studio 52.

In 1977, Steve Rubell and Ian Schrager opened a nightclub in the building,
retaining many of former TV and theatrical sets and naming it for its street.
Launched at the peak of the disco dancing and music trend, the club became
world-famous,noted for its celebrity guest lists, restrictive (and subjective)
entry policies (based on one's appearance and style), rampant club drug use, and
open sexual activity in the club's infamous balcony and basement VIP rooms.

In 1980, the club shut down after its founders were convicted for evading taxes.
They sold the club to Mark Fleischman who reopened it, then sold it in 1984 to
new owners, who closed it in 1986.

Since November 1998, the site has served as a venue for productions of the
Roundabout Theatre Company and retains the name Studio 54. A separate restaurant
and nightclub, Feinstein's/54 Below, operates in the basement of the building.

In 2020, it expanded into a music imprint including a record label, Studio 54
Music, and radio station on Sirius XM, Studio 54 Radio.

REMEMBERING AN ICONIC NIGHTCLUB IN NEW YORK

PARADISE GARAGE

The Paradise Garage, also known as "the Garage" or the "Gay-rage", was a
discotheque in New York Citynotable in the history of modern dance and pop
music, as well as LGBT and nightclub cultures. It was founded by Michael Brody,
its sole proprietor, and was located at 84 King Street in the SoHo neighborhood.
It operated from 1977 to 1987 and was the base for resident DJ Larry Levan.

The club has been credited for its influence on the development of the modern
dance club as it is in the 2000s; unlike other clubs of its time, the Paradise
Garage was focused on dancing rather than verbal interaction, and it was the
first to put the DJ at the center of attention. It was known for its
enthusiastic, yet unforgiving nature if a performer was struggling.

Among the notable musicians who performed there were Diana Ross and a young
Madonna. In 1979, Tim Curry released the album Fearless, containing the single
"Paradise Garage", whose lyrics narrate visiting the discotheque.

In April 2018, demolition on the former Paradise Garage site was completed.

idea of a pilot which piggybacked on a special "Merv" salute to the movie Thank
God It's Friday which would feature top disco dancers from 8 cities competing
for a title. Casablanca Records had already paid for the set, so a pilot could
be produced at a significant reduction. Merv's vision was to have frequent
Griffin guest Deney Terrio as the host, and celebrities would dance with
professional disco dancers. (In a sense, it was very similar to Dancing with the
Stars.) But pilot show producer Ernest Chambers had no success convincing the
stars who were approached to consent to the format. They were afraid they would
look bad. On the Sunday prior to the show, director Dick Carson suggested since
they already had the dancers for the Thank God It's Friday salute, to select the
top four couples from that show and have them compete on the pilot with
celebrities as judges. "Nobody's ever going to see this thing anyway." Within a
couple days, Sherman Hemsley, Barbi Benton, and Herve Villechaize were secured
as the judges. After the Thursday night Griffin/Thank God It's Friday special
was taped, show staffers Larry Strawther and Paul Gilbert were dispatched to
lure the top four finishers to participate in the next night's pilot production,
but keep it a secret. That didn't happen, but despite some acrimony among the
dancers, not helped by a one-night stand between a couple of dancers that caused
a rift, the pilot was produced and ended up being sold. Another long-time
Griffin staffer, Paul Abeyta, produced the show's first two seasons which were
written by Tony Garofalo. Later seasons were produced by Paul Gilbert.

REMEMBERING AN ICONIC DISCO RECORD LABEL

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SALSOUL RECORDS

Operating out of NYC, SalSoul was one of the foremost and influential disco
labels of its time. Having dabbled in latino music through their Mericana
imprint, the Cayre brothers, Joseph, Kenneth and Stanley, founded SalSoul in
1974 taking the name from a Joe Bataan album previously licensed to CBS. Salsoul
was literally a combination of ‘salsa’ and ‘soul’ and in an inspired move, the
brothers immediately put together a house band known as the SalSoul Orchestra.
Drummer Earl Young, bassist Ronnie Baker, guitarists Norman Harris and Bobby
Eli, keyboard players Bunny Sigler and Ron Kersey, vibes man Vince Montana Jr
and conga player/band leader Larry Washington had all played on Gamble & Huff’s
Philadelphia productions and would provide SalSoul’s signature sound. Unable to
secure a major label distribution deal, the brothers managed to get legendary DJ
Frankie Crocker to support the debut single ‘SalSoul Hustle’ and the label was
up and running.

A succession of disco classics followed, including the first commercially
available 12” single, Double Exposure’s ‘Ten Percent’ and recordings by First
Choice, Candido, Carol Williams, Inner Life, Skyy and Loleatta Holloway. The
label was unable to ride the disco backlash, although it continued until 1984.
In 1992 the label was revived and interest in its catalogue bloomed when
Holloway’s ‘Love Sensation’ was sampled and became an integral part of Black
Box’s ‘Ride On Time and Mark Mark & The Funky Bunch’s ‘Good Vibrations’.
Particularly popular throughout Europe, the SalSoul catalogue has since been
sampled and remixed on numerous occasions.

The SalSoul master catalogue was acquired by BMG in 2015 as part of the Verse
Music Group. Includes: Salsoul Orchestra, Joe Bataan, Double Exposure, Loleatta
Holloway, First Choice, Carol Williams, Skyy, Silvetti, Jimmy Caster, Charo,
Aurra, Eddie Holman, Candido, Funk Deluxe, Bunny Sigler & Candido
