 * OVERVIEW

A warm welcome awaits you from Open Forum Events as we introduce the third
annual event focusing on adult safeguarding.

The Safeguarding Adults 2024 conference is an essential meeting that brings
together professionals from various sectors to discuss and address important
issues related to safeguarding adults at risk of harm. This conference aims to
raise awareness, share best practices, and collaborate on strategies to protect
adults at risk of abuse or neglect.

Information from the Safeguarding Adults Collection in England between April
2022 and March 2023 revealed that approximately 587,965 concerns of abuse
against adults had been raised, which was an increase of nine per cent on the
previous year. Approximately 2.6 million people over the age of 65 are victims
of abuse each year in the UK but it is likely this figure is not a true
reflection due to under reporting.

This conference will seek to promote a culture of protection and support for
those at risk through a series of keynote speeches, delivered by renowned
safeguarding experts, panel discussions, and networking opportunities.  The
agenda will focus on current challenges and trends, provide practical tools and
strategies for safeguarding adults, and contribute to enhanced skills and
practice.

If you have a safeguarding responsibility and wish to gain new insights and
knowledge, learn from experts in the field, engage in meaningful conversations
to improve safeguarding practices nationally, and build connections with
like-minded professionals, BOOK YOUR PLACE TODAY

This conference is designed to induce change with knowledge, innovation, and
inspiration.
Any transformation of a process or service requires the input of products and
services devised to make improvements such as digital technologies; training
provision; workforce planning; outsourced services; data and analytics etc.
If your organisation supports change through your products and services, our
delegates and conference participants will be ready to engage with you.

"Hourglass – A Unique Service for Older Victim-Survivors"

Hourglass is the only UK-wide charity supporting older victim-survivors of
abuse, exploitation and neglect. Hourglass research in 2020 revealed that over
2.6 million people in the UK are affected by the abuse of older people each
year. Yet, this is an issue which is rarely discussed. This presentation will
outline the nature and extent of abuse of older people, the services Hourglass
provides, and the changes needed at all levels of society from government to the
general public, to ensure safer ageing is guaranteed for all.

"Listening with Empathy: Are You Even Listening to Me?!"

In 2022-2023, there was a 9% increase in safeguarding adults concerns, leading
to more enquiries and investigations under Section 42, Part 1, of the Care Act
2014. These investigations involve local authorities, safeguarding leads,
healthcare workers, community nurses, GPs, housing support workers, and most
importantly, the adults at risk. It is vital for all professionals involved to
understand the importance of listening with empathy, ensuring that every
interaction with the adult at risk is as impactful, empathetic and as human as
possible

"The Engage Approach"

A Whole Family, Whole System Approach to Reducing Domestic Abuse. The Engage
Approach uses a whole-family, whole-system model to reduce domestic abuse by
focusing on early intervention and behavioural change.
Tailored to an individual's age, stage, and phase of life, the approach provides
support at the earliest opportunity to influence positive outcomes.

Engage: Do you feel what I feel and working with Child Victims of Domestic
Abuse.
Domestic Abuse Experts delve into how exposure to domestic abuse can deeply
affect a child’s well-being, often resulting in trauma that can carry into their
development and long-term mental health. They also introduce "Do you feel what I
feel". This toolkit serves as a vital resource for professionals working with
child victims of domestic abuse, providing practical strategies and approaches
to offer support.

is centred around giving parents/carers the skills to be able to manage their
children’s behaviour. The program looks at how the child’s behaviour can impact
on the adults and equips the adults with strategies to readdress the balance
within the home.

The 10 week program, based on the principles of non-violent resistance, connects
groups of parents who journey together, build lasting relationships, and support
each other, providing them with a sense of belonging and community.

The presentation will show how adult, and children’s services benefit each other

"The Contribution of Neuropsychology to Safeguarding Adults Experiencing
Multiple Exclusion Homelessness"

There is a high prevalence of acquired brain injuries and other neurological
conditions amongst the homeless population. However, this group of people are
often unable to access assessment services that would help understand their
needs, meaning this information is not available to inform safeguarding
processes. We will review the kind of difficulties that acquired neurological
conditions may lead to in the homeless population, focusing on cognitive and
neurobehavioural changes, with reference to safeguarding practices. We will
present the work of our dedicated homelessness neuropsychological service,
including successes, challenges and hopes for the future.

CLOSING KEYNOTE ADDRESS

Abuse Safeguarding and Prevention Officer, Cheshire Police (confirmed)
 * Guy Rands, Psychotherapist, . (confirmed)

"Cracking the Cycle: A New Approach to reduce repeat victimisation with romance
fraud survivors. "

The Problem

People who fall victim to fraud once are more likely to be targeted again.
Current methods don't effectively address the underlying reasons behind this
behaviour.

Proposed Solution: ‘Look Back Before Looking Forward’

PC Jim Day will talk about working in partnership with Guy Rands at “The
Listening Project”, with the intention of focusing helping victims understand
their self-image through active listening and conversation.

By exploring past experiences and vulnerabilities, victims can gain
self-awareness and change their perspective. This empowers them to make better
choices in the future and reduces the risk of repeat victimisation.

Conclusion

By addressing the underlying psychological factors, helpers can empower victims
to protect themselves. Implementing these techniques can lead to significant
cost savings and improved well-being for victims.
