Anyone without one is cut off from society.Nick can’t get a neural implant. That fact turns his daily life into hell, but the city’s underworld has its plans for him. Being invisible to the city’s omnipresent tracking has its perks. Without a neural presence, he’s someone who is felt but not seen—a wraith.His natural advantage leads him to work on illegal projects, including one to create human-like AI “dolls.” Until the government shuts down everything and Nick is reduced to a life of back-office IT drudgery, under strict monitoring.But the city isn’t done with him, and the police soon knock on his door. Those advanced dolls he created are now Babylon’s law enforcement. And they have an offer for Nick: help them reshape the city and root out corruption from the inside.Who better to investigate the city than a man who cannot be seen by it? So I picked this up on a whim. Glad I did. Pretty much red it straight through and liked to see if there was a second book. Not yet, I hope soon. Overall this book was fairly well written and enjoyable. Doesn’t quite live up ti the description as “shady guy dodging the system” is the back story, not the one presented. This one is investigation drama where he’s literally a detective for the system… so kinda 180 degree flip.The robot models are convoluted and while specialized, there’s overlap and naming conventions that are hard to follow even disregarding oversized weapon and armor. But it’s largely immaterial and can be gleaned through context. This was a great, easy read. The setting isn’t my usual fair, but it held my interest until I finished it. I even read while on the clock at work to finish it!The protagonist is really well written for this type of story. He’s special, but not in the usual, over powered way. The dolls are well written as well and I kept hoping for more “slice of life” and date/romantic moments with them instead of the plot. The named dolls each show affection and interest differently according to their programing and personalities which was really cool.The exposition did feel overly long and Nick, the protagonist does spend a little too much time in his head, not unusual for a mystery story, but it detracted a bit from the flow of things.This point wasn’t enough for me to detract any stars, though, but it might hinder someone else’s enjoyment.Looking forward to the sequel and more adorable moments with Rie and the others!
