FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What are the requirements for supervision for a social work intern registered in
Florida?

The supervision experience for a registered social work intern in Florida
includes a minimum of 100 hours of supervision spread out over at least 100
weeks, 1,500 hours of face-to-face psychotherapy with clients, and a minimum of
one hour of supervision every two weeks. These requirements are outlined in
Florida’s Rule 64B4-2.002, F.A.C. We recommend reviewing these rules for more
detailed information on the supervision requirements for registered social work
interns in Florida. You can find more information on the Florida Board of
Clinical Social Work, Marriage and Family Therapy, and Mental Health Counseling
website here.

What are the necessary steps to become a registered intern?

To begin the process of becoming a registered social work intern in Florida,
there are a few key steps to follow. First, one must visit the Florida Board of
Clinical Social Work, Marriage and Family Therapy, and Mental Health Counseling
website here to review the licensure requirements and ensure they meet the
qualifications set by the Board. Next, they can apply for licensure, submit any
necessary documentation, and pass a background check. After this, they must
complete the required supervised professional experience and pass the
appropriate examination. Finally, they will be issued a license and can begin
practicing as a registered social work intern in Florida. For more resources and
information, please visit the “resource” link provided on the website header.

How to get a letter of supervision from me?

As a Board-approved Qualified Supervisor, I provide personalized virtual and
in-person supervision to assist you in accomplishing your objectives and
attaining licensure as a clinical social worker. Allow me to support you
throughout your professional development. To initiate your journey towards
licensure and secure a letter of supervision from me, we present two (2) options
for your consideration:

 1. Browse our website’s Resource page or visit the FAQ section for more
information on my supervision services. This will help you understand the
process and what to expect during our sessions.

 2. If you are prepared to advance in your journey towards licensure, you can
book a session with me directly by clicking on this link:
https://calendly.com/mejerlinebe, or by selecting “Book Your Session” on the
top right corner of this website header.

Acquiring a letter of supervision from me is a vital step in your licensure
process, and my goal is to make this experience as effortless as possible for
you. To ensure a hassle-free procedure, a retainer fee of $30.00 is collected,
which encompasses the cost of procuring the letter of supervision. Once we agree
to collaborate, I will send a letter featuring my license number and your name
as stated on your application, confirming my commitment to supervise you during
your registered intern period. Subsequently, we will await an approval letter
from the Board Office specifying the commencement date of our supervision.
*Please be aware that supervision hours will only be considered valid once the
Board Office has approved the letter.

What does the supervision experience with me involve?

As your supervisor, you will need to complete at least 100 hours of supervision
with me over a minimum of 100 weeks. In addition, you must also complete 1,500
hours of face-to-face psychotherapy with clients. You will be required to attend
one hour of supervision with me every two weeks to ensure that you are meeting
the requirements set forth by the Florida Administrative Code (Rule 64B4-2.002,
F.A.C). It’s important to note that the requirements allow you to complete up to
four hours of supervision per month. These requirements are in place to ensure
that you receive the necessary training and experience to become a licensed
mental health professional. Please refer to the Florida Administrative Code for
more details on these rules.

What is your fee for supervision services?

Once you decide to join the group, we will complete the required letter for the
board, and complete a social work supervision agreement and clinical supervision
plan.

To book supervision with me, you will schedule both individual and group
sessions by accessing my schedule. Group supervision charges $45 per session,
and individual $50 per session (not including the processing fee of $2.00).
Also, please note these prices are subject to change in 2023 to $50 per group
session and $60 per individual session.

Do you offer group supervision?

Yes, group supervision takes place once a month and  typically covers general
topics such as test preparation, social work ethics, and discussions on the
DSM-V.

How can I determine if my current job qualifies for clinical supervision?

The board has determined that if you assess, diagnose, and treat mental health
or substance abuse, you are eligible for LCSW supervision. Don’t get too
concerned about making a formal diagnosis. In many settings, it is the physician
or psychiatrist working together as a interdisciplinary team.

What is the process for removing a qualified supervisor from my list of
supervisors?

To remove a supervisor from your list of qualified supervisors, you need to ask
the supervisor you are removing to complete the  Verification of Clinical
Experience Form. On the form, they should select the option that says “I am no
longer providing this intern with supervision.” Once completed, you should
submit the form to the Board Office via email or electronically. It’s important
to note that supervision received from the new supervisor will not count until
the Board Office has notified you in writing that your new supervisor has been
approved.

Please keep in mind that registered interns are required to remain under
supervision until fully licensed, as per Rule 64B4-3.008, F.A.C. Therefore, it’s
crucial to ensure that you have a qualified and approved supervisor to provide
you with the necessary training and experience to become a licensed mental
health professional.

Do I still need supervision after completing post-master's experience and
passing the exam?

Yes, according to Rule 64B4-3.008, F.A.C., applicants practicing clinical social
work, marriage and family therapy, and/or mental health counseling are required
to continue in supervision until fully licensed, as defined in Rule 64B4-2.002,
F.A.C., even after completing post-master’s supervised experience and passing
the exam. Therefore, it is necessary to continue meeting the requirements for
supervision as set forth by the licensing board.

As a registered intern, am I required to obtain continuing education?

No, there is no requirement that a registered intern obtain continuing
education.  However, you may choose to complete the 8 hour laws and rules
course, 3 hour HIV/AIDS and 2 hour domestic violence requirement for licensure
while you are a registered intern. Please refer to  RCSWI Resources for course
program suggestions.

What is the typical processing time for applications with the Florida Board?

Florida law provides that an initial application must be reviewed within 30
days. However, the actual processing time may vary and can be affected by a
number of factors such as the volume of applications received, the completeness
of the application, and any additional information or documentation required by
the board. To check the current processing time, you can visit the Florida
Board’s website here and look for information on the average number of days it
is currently taking to process applications.

Can I take the ASWB examination before completing my post-master's supervised
experience?

Yes.  If you have completed the education and practicum requirements and are a
registered intern you may be approved to sit for the examination.  However,
applicants must request exam approval prior to contacting their test provider.
To request exam approval, email MQA.491@flhealth.gov. You may also visit the
Florida Board Exam Schedule page for more information.

How can I contact you if I have further questions?

The fastest way to reach me is by sending an email to info@swsupervision.com.
You can also contact me on Facebook through messenger.

Can registered interns provide therapy through telehealth?

Yes, registered interns can provide therapy to clients via telehealth, subject
to certain requirements. According to Rule 64B4-18.002, F.A.C. (Florida
Administrative Code), registered interns are permitted to provide telehealth
services as long as they comply with the standards of practice set forth in the
rule. These standards include obtaining informed consent from the client,
ensuring the security and confidentiality of the client’s information, and
complying with all applicable laws and regulations. It is important to note that
registered interns must receive supervision while providing telehealth services,
and the supervisor must have the necessary training and experience to provide
such supervision.

It’s worth noting that the use of telehealth by registered social work interns
in Florida is allowed by the Florida Board of Clinical Social Work, Marriage and
Family Therapy, and Mental Health Counseling during the COVID-19 pandemic.
However, it’s important to keep in mind that this permission may be subject to
change based on the Board’s guidelines. Therefore, it is recommended that you
check with the Florida Board for the latest information on telehealth and ensure
that you comply with any applicable rules and regulations.

In addition, as per Board’s Rule 64B4-7.002, Registered Interns must practice
under the on-site supervision of a licensed professional at present. It’s
important to note that these rules and regulations are subject to change, so
it’s essential to review them regularly and check with the Board for the most
up-to-date information.
