It started with a pair of scissors and paper. Now, a whimsical floral design by
Sherry Freyermuth, assistant professor of studio art, appears on rolls of Bounty
paper towels that are available across the country.

Freyermuth was one of eight winners of a national design competition. “It’s
taking something functional in your home and making it more joyful,” she says.

Nate Bethancourt has found his calling in entrepreneurship. It’s something he’s
studied in class with John Dobson, a professor in the Clark University School of
Management. He’s gained confidence pitching his ideas and frequently sells
homemade juice at Clark Collective Pop-Up events. Bethancourt is just like any
other student on campus, but his path to Clark may be the least traditional.

Bethancourt is one of nine students in a new educational program for formerly
incarcerated individuals called Liberal Arts for Returning Citizens (LARC),
which launched at Clark this fall.

“Seeing people from a different background in the same space on campus shows the
public that we’re not that much different,” he says.

Clark researchers are embarking on a three-year project in Central Mexico to
help people understand the myriad implications of climate change — and how to
respond.

Funded by a $1.5 million grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF)’s
Partnerships for International Research and Education Program, the project will
involve nine faculty and 19 graduate students from Clark’s International
Development, Community, and Environment Department, Clark University Geography,
and the Becker School of Design & Technology. They will collaborate with their
peers at the UNAM Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, one of the top public
research universities in Latin America.

Congratulations to Clark’s Model UN team, which proved its diplomacy,
leadership, and problem-solving prowess by outcompeting similar-size teams and
walking away with the Best Small Delegation award at the Cornell International
Affairs Conference earlier this month.

The team won the most individual awards out of any small delegation in their
respective committees at the conference and has ranked within the top 20 North
American schools for three consecutive years, including a number 9 position last
year — the highest in the team’s history.

Way to go, Clarkies!
