URGE LEGISLATORS TO TELL VA BUREAUCRATS TO STOP RISKING VETERANS’ LIVES

Please take action to stop the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) from
putting Veteran’ lives at risk by proposing to replace highly trained physician
anesthesiologists with nurses in surgery. Surgery is inherently dangerous, and
VA’s proposal threatens the lives of Veterans by eliminating physician
anesthesiologists from the surgical team, replacing them with nurse anesthetists
and denying Veterans’ access to the highest quality anesthesia care.

VA’s proposal unfairly lowers the quality of care for those who served our
country and deserve the same high standard of care as all Americans. Laws in
nearly every state and the policies of the nation’s top hospitals and health
systems require the involvement of a physician in anesthesia care to ensure the
safety and best outcomes for patients. Veterans in VA hospitals deserve nothing
less than high-quality care.

VA’s proposal also is unnecessary and based on a badly flawed bureaucratic
process. No science or necessity supports a change and VA repeatedly ignores
concerns of the hundreds of frontline anesthesiologists who four times sent
whistleblower letters requesting the proposal be withdrawn to ensure Veteran
safety.

Ask your federal lawmakers to cosponsor H.R. 7048, the Protect Lifesaving
Anesthesia Care for Veterans Act, and also to contact VA urging them to protect
Veterans’ health and safety and stop this risky plan.

Please enter your contact information on this form to inform legislators about
the value of physician-led anesthesia care and urge them to maintain
physician-led anesthesia care in VA.

Dear Official Greeting, As a constituent, I am writing to request your immediate
intervention to stop a U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs’ (VA) proposal from
eliminating physician anesthesiologists from the team of health care
professionals taking care of Veterans during surgery. Surgery is inherently
dangerous and it’s wrong for VA to threaten the lives of Veterans by eliminating
physician anesthesiologists from the surgical team, replacing them with nurse
anesthetists and denying Veterans’ access to the highest quality anesthesia
care. VA is proposing new “National Standards of Practice” that could undermine
the way anesthesia is delivered in VA. The standards could make permanent a
proposal issued by former VA Acting Executive in Charge for Health Richard
Stone, MD, to change how anesthesia is delivered in VA and unfairly lower the
quality of care for those who have served our country. The nurse-only model of
anesthesia is rare. Laws in nearly every state and the policies of the nation’s
top hospitals and health systems require the involvement of a physician in
anesthesia care to ensure the safety and best outcomes for patients. VA should
not reduce Veterans’ care to the lowest common denominator – a risky and
dangerous proposal. VA’s proposal presents unnecessary risk and is based on a
badly flawed bureaucratic process that has silenced VA’s own anesthesia experts,
VA’s chiefs of anesthesiology and highly trained and experienced physician
anesthesiologists. VA repeatedly ignored concerns of more than 400 of its own
frontline anesthesiologists who four times put their jobs on the line and sent
whistleblower notifications using the “Stop the Line” patient safety initiative,
requesting the proposal be withdrawn to ensure Veteran safety. VA ignored and
never responded to these important whistleblower notifications. I strongly urge
you to protect the health and lives of our nation’s Veterans by cosponsoring
H.R. 7048, the Protect Lifesaving Anesthesia Care for Veterans Act to halt this
dangerous proposal. I also urge you to contact VA Secretary McDonough, asking
that VA immediately halt this dangerous policy that lowers the standard of care
for Veterans and re-affirm VA’s team-based physician-led anesthesia care model.
