controlled an important trading route that went from Boulogne to Cologne. Even
in those days there were already a number of transfer zones for goods along the
Scheldt, just like at this site. The Kaaihoeve was built here at the beginning
of the 19th century. In the 20th century the Scheldt was broadened and
canalized, the old meanders were cut off from the river and the Kaaihoeve lost
its function as a transfer zone.

In , the farm became the educational nature centre of the province of
EastFlanders. Thanks to the land planning project of the FlemishLand Society VML
this part of the Scheldt valley has become a scenic area of great natural
beauty. The Kaaihoeve and the adjacent garden are most certainly worth a visit.
