DAILY UNIVERSAL REGISTER BRIEFING UK: The Cass Review publishes its final report on gender identity services for children and young people; the Financial Conduct Authority publishes a survey of UK consumers on personal finances and financial commitments, finding that 7.4 million people were struggling with bills and credit repayments in January this year; experiencing job insecurity in early adulthood is linked to a heightened risk of a serious alcohol-related illness later in life, according to a study published in the Occupational & Environmental Medicine journal. ON THIS DAY In 1912 RMS Titanicdeparted Southampton for France, its first stop. At least 1,500 people lost their lives on April 15 when the ship sank after colliding with an iceberg during its maiden voyage; in 1919 Emiliano Zapata, the Mexican revolutionary leader and land reformist, was double-crossed, ambushed and killed by government forces in his home state of Morelos. “It is better to die on your feet than to live on your knees,” is a quote attributed to him; in 1945 US troops liberated Buchenwald concentration camp, near Weimar, Germany; in 1966 Evelyn Waugh, the author of Decline and Fall (1928), A Handful of Dust (1934) and Brideshead Revisited (1945), died aged 62, after attending a Latin Mass, a liturgy close to his heart; in 1992 at 9.23pm a 1,000lb bomb planted by the Provisional IRA exploded outside the Baltic Exchange in the financial centre of London, killing three people and injuring 91. The bomb, which had been hidden in a van, caused heavy damage to surrounding buildings. NATURE NOTES The march of the American skunk cabbage (Lysichiton americanus) seems unstoppable. A native of swamps and wet woodlands in the US Pacific Northwest, American skunk cabbage was introduced to Britain in 1901 as an ornamental plant for ponds and bog gardens. By 1947, it had established itself in the wilds of Surrey. From the home counties, the plant has spread through the rest of the country. With highly mobile seeds that travel via water, bird or mammal, it quickly colonises suitable habitat, such as stream banks, pond edges or wet woodland. Its large, leathery leaves allow it to outcompete other species, by casting shade over them. The tiny flowers grow on a central spike, screened by beautiful yellow “lantern-like” hoods.
