In “The Economic Burden of Multiple Sclerosis in the United States: Estimate of Direct and Indirect Costs,” Bebo et al. reported that the direct cost of multiple sclerosis (medications and care) in the United States is $63.3 billion and the indirect cost (productivity loss, caregivers, and home modifications) is $22.1 billion. Vargas noted that these findings are underestimates of the true economic burden due to exclusion of Medicaid and veteran populations. Furthermore, she suggested the need for a comparison of the cost of relapse with the cost of disease-modifying therapies. Bebo responded that a cost-effectiveness study would be interesting but that their goal was to provide updated information on the economic burden of multiple sclerosis.
