between Paris and Lille, all high-speed trains going to and coming from Paris
are being diverted via the classic line today Friday 26 July. This extends the

Today, Eurostar will cancel 25% of its trains.

It will also be the case on Saturday 27 and Sunday 28.

'THEY'RE NOT GOING TO SPOIL THE PARTY' - FRENCH SPORTS MINISTER

13:00 CEST

French Sports Minister Amelie Oudea Castera told reporters: "What happened was
neither the first nor the last of the difficulties we'll face. This type of
malicious, coordinated action is probably an act of sabotage. What remains to be
established is the precise intent,"

She added: "We're not going to let ourselves be destabilized: we had anticipated
all these scenarios. All these crisis scenarios have been thought through. We're
a French team behind the success of these games. You can see it in the way
things have gone, the fluidity of communications. All this shows that we're
ready to handle crises.

"They're not going to spoil the party by doing this. I condemn in the strongest
terms, when you do that, when you act against the Olympics, you act against
athletes who have devoted their lives to these things. They're damaging the
dreams of young people who wanted to be inspired by all this.

"These Games are for a whole country, a whole world; we've got 206 delegations
here, let's not let them spoil the party. Tonight's exceptional ceremony
demonstrates the validity of all the security measures. We're going to do
everything we can today to ensure that repairs are carried out as quickly as
possible."

Canadian Olympic Committee CEO David Shoemaker said new information
from Soccer Canada showed suspended women's head coach Bev Priestman was likely
aware of the drone use that has caused a scandal at the Paris Olympics, Lori
Ewing reports.

The COC removed head coach Priestman on Thursday following her suspension
by Canada Soccer following complaints from New Zealand that Canada flew drones
over two of their training sessions. Assistant Andy Spence will coach Canada for
the remainder of the Games.

Shoemaker also said he is comfortable with Canada's women's team remaining in
Paris to defend their Olympic gold medal amid rumblings that the team should be
disqualified over the drone scandal that has thrust the team into the spotlight.

OLYMPIC CEREMONY DUE IN HOURS

11:40 CEST

By
Ingrid Melander

The Paris Olympics officially kick off on Friday with an extravagant opening
ceremony through the heart of Paris.

But the attack by vandals targeting France's high-speed TGV rail network exposed
security risks at a time of geopolitical friction.

The coordinated actions by arsonists brought major disruption to some of
France's busiest rail lines ahead of Friday evening's ceremony, including lines
connecting Paris with cities such as Lille in the north, Bordeaux in the west
and Strasbourg in the east. No one has claimed responsibility.

The attack took place despite a massive security operation for the Games
involving some 45,000 police, 10,000 soldiers and 2,000 private security staff.

Scores of world leaders will be in Paris for the opening ceremony, which will be
protected by snipers on rooftops. The Seine's riverbed has been swept for bombs,
and Paris' airspace will be closed.

For the Games more generally, radar-surveillance planes and Reaper drones will
monitor sensitive sites from above, and Mirage 2000 fighter jets will be on
standby to intercept aircraft straying into restricted airspace.

THE FRENCH PM WARNED THAT CYBERATTACKS ON THE OLYMPICS ARE ALSO INEVITABLE

French Prime Minister Gabriel Attal said on Thursday that cyberattacks on
the Paris Olympics are inevitable and France will do everything in its power to
limit the impact they may have on the event.

"We are a target. There will be cyberattacks. The key thing is to limit their
impact," Attal told reporters at the headquarters of France's ANSSI software
security agency.

MACRON'S 'CRAZY' OLYMPICS PLAN FOR A FLOATING PARADE ON THE SEINE

11:23 CEST

FILE PHOTO: Paris 2024 Olympics - Seine river police gear up for security,
Seine, Paris, France - July 2, 2024, REUTERS/Sarah Meyssonnier

When early proponents of hosting an unprecedented Olympics opening
ceremony along the river Seine first pitched the idea to the then-head of Paris
police, he was dead-set against it,  Michel Rose and Julien Pretot.

"It's madness," Didier Lallement said in 2021, according to two sources, citing
the vast logistical and security challenges of throwing such an ambitious
event in a city still marked by a series of 2015 Islamist attacks that killed
130 people.

With the spectacular floating parade due to set off along the Seine on Friday
evening, President Emmanuel Macron will hope Lallement's doubts prove
ill-founded.

"At the beginning, it seemed to be a crazy and not very serious idea," Macron
told foreign reporters at the Elysee palace on Monday. "But we decided it was
the right moment to deliver this crazy idea and make it real."

France has rolled out its biggest ever security operation to safeguard the Games
and its blockbuster opening ceremony. Officials say there is no direct threat to
the Games, but say they have so far foiled two suspected attacks
