Some top New York lawmakers are "proud" of this new toll but some Hudson Valley
lawmakers call it an "insult to families."

MTA APPROVES CONGESTION PRICING PLAN

On Wednesday, the full MTA board approved the congestion price plan for New York
City. This means, most will have to pay a 15-dollar toll to drive past 60th
street.

"Congestion pricing will reduce traffic in our crowded downtown, improve air
quality and provide critical resources to the MTA." New York Gov. Kathy Hochul
previously stated. "I am proud of the thorough Environmental Assessment process
we conducted."

Hochul's office hasn't released many details about the plan, because officials
still need to finalize everything, including how much drivers will have to pay
to enter below Manhattan's 60th Street.

"Now the real work begins. The MTA Board, in its capacity as the TBTA Board,
must adopt a tolling structure, and contractors need to set up tolling equipment
throughout the tolling area. The result will be reduced traffic congestion and
the establishment of one of the funding pillars for the MTA's historic 2020-2024
Capital Program, a historic level of investment to make upgrades that will bring
the network to a State of Good Repair, enhance accessibility, accelerate climate
resiliency and eliminate transit deserts," MTA Chair and CEO Janno Lieber said.

Officials have yet to release how much it may cost to drive from the Hudson
Valley to New York City, but past plans proposed charging $11 to $14 per car to
enter Manhattan and up to $25 for trucks, the Daily Mail reports.

"New York is the most congested city in the United States. Congested streets
slow down buses, delay emergency vehicles and delivery services, raise the cost
of doing business, and degrade our quality of life. The Final Environmental
Assessment estimates a roughly 15-20% reduction in the number of vehicles
entering the Central Business District," Hochul's office said.

In 2019, New York lawmakers approved a plan that would charge $10 to $15 to the
over 700,000 daily drivers who drive south of Central Park. This new toll would
be on top of any existing tolls.

Once approved, New York City would become the first major U.S. city with a
congestion charge. London issued one in 2003.

The plan calls for at least a $15 toll to drive past 60th Street in New York
City.

Driving at night, between the hours of 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. will save drivers 75
percent of the proposed toll.

On Wednesday, the MTA board approved a tweak to the plan that includes
exemptions to yellow school buses, most commuter buses and certain specialized
government vehicles.

The MTA hopes to start tolling drivers by mid-June, but several lawsuits are
trying to stop congestion pricing, which may delay the June start.
