Alan Sugar is a self-made man, and he tells you how he got there. In the book,
there is a mix of personal life and business life. Just when you get tired of
reading about one, he switches to the other. He also is upfront about the people
he has dealt with in business, and mentions them by name.
Even though I am not a fan of soccer, I liked his chapter on Tottenham Hotspur.
Even if you don't like sports, the way he dealt with that chapter of his life is
very informative and interesting.
Whether you own your own business, work for someone else, are unemployed, or
whatever; this book will provide you with great info about business and how to
deal with people in everyday life.

From selling kindling fire starers (tared timber scraps from demolished

The only criticism I can offer is that too many pages are dedcicated to the
internal politics and machinations of the UK Premier League Football Association
which non fans will find a bit tedious.

I must say, having downloaded this book without much conviction and purely
because I needed something quickly before bed and couldn't be bothered to
search, I have enjoyed it immensely and can thoroughly recommend it.
I say "without much conviction" because of what I knew of Lord Sugar from the
Apprentice series: a straight talking, no-nonsense guy but not exactly the
intellectual type, so I was basically expecting a badly written book. God knows
most celebrity autobiographies are.
But while this is definitely not going to win any literary awards, it certainly
flows well. My guess is that the help of a ghost writer was enlisted, but if
that's the case, they did a great job of sounding exactly like the man himself.
It's like sitting in the famous boardroom with him, except instead of firing and
hiring candidates, he is telling you about his rags to riches story.
And what a fascinating story it is. Let's be clear, you have to take it all with
a pinch of salt, especially when he is giving his views on other entrepreneurs,
companies and football personalities, particularly the ones he took to court
(and there are many...) Without giving any outright spoilers, let's just say
that most people who tried to mess with Alan Sugar found themselves in a lot of
trouble.
Even though you sense that half the time he is just giving you a very one-sided
version of each story, you still find yourself rooting for him to get one over
his competitors, to right any wrongs against him or to clinch the next big deal.
I agree with other reviewers that he dedicates a large portion of the book to
the Tottenham years, so if (like myself) you are not a football fan and don't
remember those times, you might find that section a bit tedious. But if you are
in any way a fan of Lord Sugar, it's worth reading through those chapters, as
it's clearly a major part of his life, one that severely affected him personally
as well as financially.
He comes across as very honest about both his successes and his failures. He is
very proud of the former, but also takes the latter in his stride and always
tries to identify the reasons why certain things didn't go to plan, without
making excuses. As someone who is genuinely passionate about nurturing the next
generation of entrepreneurs, he makes sure that the book includes plenty of
practical advice and lessons on identifying opportunities, working hard to make
things happen, learning from your mistakes and sometimes knowing when to cut
your losses and pull out of something before it's too late.
And unlike many charlatan writers of business self-help books, who claim to be
able to teach you how to get rich quick (despite the authors having never
achieved anything themselves) Lord Sugar doesn't tell you "anyone can do it".
Quite the opposite: in his view, in order to succeed in business you need many
natural qualities that simply can't be taught. While this may seem arrogant, it
rings true and I'm more inclined to believe it since it's coming from someone
worth a few hundred millions.
I urge you to read this, you won't be disappointed.

Alan Sugar was a born opportunist. From a very early age he could see an
opportunity to make money where other people saw a pile of junk. Couple this
with a fierce desire to do well and we learn - from his autobiography What You
See Is What You Get - how he transforms from a young and naive lad to the
supremely successful businessman that Lord Sugar is today.
The book takes you on his journey in his own blunt way of speaking, from when he
was a poor, young loner to becoming a multi-millionaire in his thirties; a
football club chairman in his forties; a Knight of the Realm and a television
phenomenon in his fifties; and Lord Sugar, Baron Sugar of Clapton in his
sixties.
The first half of the book is mainly about the rise of the company he created -
Amstrad. It goes into great detail about how Alan Sugar built it into a multi
million pound industry from scratch, using nothing more than common sense, an
eye for an opportunity and a self taught ability to negotiate and hustle. There
is not much mention of his family in this section, other than briefly covering
the main events such as marriage to his wife, Ann, the birth of their children,
moving house etc.
The second half covers the period as Tottenham Hotspur's Chairman; how he became
a television personality, a Knight and a Lord; and the dignified demise of his
beloved company Amstrad.
The book doesn't go into any detail on how the pressures of building up the
Sugar Empire impacted his family or friends. It only touches on some points in
this area. It does, however, give an insight into how Alan Sugar felt whenever
his loyalty was betrayed and in particular, when he became victim to negative
media coverage - especially during his time as Tottenham Hotspur Football Club
chairman. As well as the harsh, business tycoon we see portrayed in The
Apprentice television show, the book also reveals a more sensitive and private
side of Alan Sugar.
I don't know if Alan Sugar physically typed the words of the book himself, but
there's no doubt that it's written in his own voice - you can just hear him
saying things like: "I've bleedin' had it up to the neck with all that crap!"
and "Either you get me the bloody boat for five million dollars or stop driving
me bleedin' mad!". At times `the voice' seems cocky and full of himself - but
then who wouldn't be, with the achievements that Alan Sugar has made to date.
One of the most impressive things about Alan Sugar's life is that he's gone
through some major business ups and downs and yet he's never lost his own
personal fortune, and it appears that the closeness of his family and inner
circle of friends remains intact.
This is a book well worth reading if only to hear the facts from the horse's
mouth. But it's also a journey that takes the reader along, through the risk
taking, the money making, the conflicts with the media and his adversaries - to
the survival of a highly respected business man, famous entrepreneur, decent
family man and loyal friend.

Many years ago, when Amstrad was still trading under Alan Sugar's direction, I
bought, during the course of several years, two Amstrad computers. One of the
them was an 'all in one' package, the design of which did not seem to interest
consumers very much: given that virtually no other company followed suit at the
time; but now, I see that the concept is returning, albeit in a much more
condensed form. The first of the computers had built in T.V. When resizing the
viewing area when using the television programme, the television window started
to scramble itself thereby making it impossible to view. An engineer was sent
fairly rapidly to check out the problem. He confirmed my findings and notified
Amstrad who contacted me to tell me that they had previous knowledge of the
fault - software - and that they would send a C.D to me as soon as the new
software was available. This they did, proving that what Lord Sugar says in the
book is correct: words mean nothing - action does - and he keeps to his intended
promises. I remember all too well how little direction was shown in this country
to the subject of computers before Lord Sugar had enough foresight to realise,
in both senses of the word, that it would make sense to have a complete system -
instead of the domestic user having to traipse around buying a computer, and
then trying to find compatible monitors, keyboards, printers, etc., I owe him,
in that respect, because computers have given me much fun and enjoyment over the
years.
Now onto the book itself: well, as other reviewers have said, reading the book
is like having the man sit next to you and chatting away without any awareness
of who he does, or does not, offend. After all, in business, if one worries
about causing offence then I imagine that it would be hard to strike a good deal
because one would be constantly watching every sentence for fear of overstepping
what is considered to be etiquette. I found the book fascinating to read; every
spare moment found me grabbing the book to read just another 5 pages, which
turned out to be another 20 pages, before I had to do other things, smile.
Lord Sugar clearly detests certain newspapers; and who can blame him when it is
clear that they misquote all the time. No doubt he is happy now that he has the
opportunity to express his views via the Internet - clear for all to see, as he
wanted it be seen - without corruption of his words or intent.
As regards to him being seen as something of an ogre, I would point out that
many of his workforce have been with him for over 20 years: surely a sign that
he can't be 'that' bad? To me, the man's truly deserves his success. Oh, how I
wish that I had one thousandth of his business sense.

Had this book stopped after the Spurs affair I think I would have rated it 5*s
it was such a good read. After that it became a bit boring and having admired
Lord Sugar's entrepreneurial spirit I got a bit bored of his personal vendetta
against anyone who took a snipe at him, although I can't help being envious that
he had enough money to take on some of these people. I was left wondering
whether he really had a point relating to fairness or whether he was just
arrogant, self satisfied, rich, smug and never wrong, and just got on everyone's
nerves. He has massive 'I-trouble' and reading all the products 'I launched'
reminded me of someone I used to work for, who, when he moved to another company
and we met up told me how many products he had launched. His story was 3 or 4
the truth was zero! How many did Lord Sugar personally launch I wonder?
The book is written in a very honest style and I found it amusing and very
entertaining though as I said, it did tail off towards the end - becoming more
and more celebrity and celebrities based. There's also a bit of a delicious
irony that the vast media empire he helped create, BSkyB, which he goes on about
ad nauseum, bit him back. Lord Sugar hates the very monster he assisted in
developing, oh the irony.
Lastly, I wondered why his daughter had a very low billing in the book - his
sons are mentioned quite frequently but his daughter hardly at all - I assume
this was her request rather than anything more sinister?
So, overall a great and worthwhile read, honest and funny, sad too at times. A
man who is, according to what he writes, highly principled and very
professional, that comes through a lot, but I am left wondering what is he
really like?
I very much doubt I will ever meet him, I'm sure it would be entertaining, we
could swap flying stories but of course he'd always be right ;-D

I really enjoyed reading this book from Alan Sugar. I'm not sure if he wrote it
personally, and I see there is some debate about whether or not he did, but I'd
be shocked if he didn't at least write MOST of it, purely because there was just
so many details and the fact that it 'sounded' like him - i could hear him
almost talking to me through the book as it is written in very much 'his style'
and manner of speaking. This is not a quick 'feelgood' type of book, it really
gets down to the nitty gritty of what it is like building a huge business from
scratch and includes relentless details about exactly how this all happened.
This may put some people off and makes the book rather long, but for me I
thought it was the best part. This book will really appeal to you if you have
even the slightest inkling of the spirit of doing business inside you (I
hesitate to say the word 'entrepreneur' because Lord Sugar mentions both on the
telly and in his book about how he doesn't like people using this term to refer
to themselves, and I quite agree!).
A fairly big chunk of this book dealt with Lord Sugar's time with Tottenham
Football Club. Not being a football fan at all, I let out a big moan when I came
to this part expecting to be thoroughly bored by it. However what transpired was
very interesting indeed even though I know nothing about either football or Lord
Sugar's prior involvement in it. There were a lot of valuable lessons that can
be taken from this section in particular, as it represented what was obviously
the most challenging time of his entire career and a lot of very difficult
decisions that had to be made. I tend to be prone to 'giving up' when the going
gets tough, when I enter times in my business where I have to deal with
difficult situations. The fact that Lord Sugar persevered for 10 years is either
very committed and strong of him, or very stubborn and bad for ones health - i'm
not entirely sure which! Nevertheless this was the most helpful part for me to
see how difficult times were dealt with by other people in business and how they
overcame that.
So then - in short, if you like business and want ALL the details of exactly
how, why, and when everything in this remarkable man's life happened, then get
this book!
