Beaumont — The U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Texas tells KFDM/Fox 4
News his office is using all of the legal ammunition at its disposal to stop the
vicious cycle of domestic violence and help the victims.

We spoke via Zoom today with Damien M. Diggs, about their mission to prosecute
the suspects and put them behind bars.

The U.S. Attorney's Office works with local organizations like Family Services
of Southeast Texas, which is building a new shelter off Concord Road in Beaumont
to help victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. It'll double the
capacity of the existing shelter.

Diggs says Operation Purple Ribbon will make a big difference across the Eastern
District. It goes after abusers by utilizing federal prosecution of felons who
use guns, and suspects who stalk ex-wives or girlfriends through the internet.

The U.S. Attorney vows to continue the crackdown.

"And so if we can just kind of come in through federal prosecution, come in and
almost just be a stopgap, where the victim and the family can have some time
away, that will hopefully be the catalyst that will hopefully stop the cycle,"
says Diggs. "Like any issue we have, whether it's violent crime, fraud, whatever
the issue is, we're not going to be able to prosecute our way out of these
crimes. Which means a critical component of operation purple ribbon is the
community outreach piece, which is where we conduct outreach with local service
providers such as Family Services of Southeast Texas."

Diggs tells KFDM/Fox 4 News going after violent criminals and those responsible
for fentanyl deaths are also priorities for his office.
