P-007:Vifquin

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Architecture,
Project

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

2023-05
Schaerbeek, Brussels, Belgium
Collaborators: Jakub Niemynski

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The ’VIFQUIN’ project, as part of a BMA competition, is committed to the
rehabilitation of an old communal building in Schaerbeek dating back to the
1960s. This rehabilitation aims to establish a new program within the building
by transforming offices into housing while retaining a ground floor with a
public program. Regarding the existing building, it has a rationalized
reinforced concrete column-beam structure, waffled slabs, and an aluminum facade
covering. Inside, there is a labyrinthic arrangement of fairly isolated spaces,
resulting in a lack of natural light.

The ‘VIFQUIN’ building competition, by its nature, addresses a contemporary
challenge in our society, where architecture, urban life, and our relationship
with the past and the existing must contribute to creating an environment
conducive to communal living. This led us to reflect on what it means to live
with the existing, to live in the city, and to live in a community, and
especially what it could mean in the future. We aimed to create housing and
public and semi-public spaces that encourage interactions among residents and
invite various activities and exchanges to take place. The main idea of the
project is to create a vertical mini-village in the city, a place where you know
your neighbors and build interpersonal relationships to escape the anonymity of
contemporary city life. Thus regarding the program, we prioritized and maximized
common and public spaces through the ground floor, external circulation, and the
roof.

In relation to the existing structure, we chose to strip the building down to
its core and focus on its intrinsic qualities, which are found in its basic
structure and layout. Our main interventions on this existing structure involved
the deconstruction of the secondary stairwell and the bridge, as well as the
reconstruction of the main stairwell. This reduces the building's density, which
in turn increases circulation within the block and brings in more natural
light. Furthermore, while designing the apartment units, we had the goal to
preserve the waffled slabs as much as possible and to highlight them by aligning
as many interior walls as possible to them.

P-006: Open House

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Architecture,
Project

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

2022-05
Forest, Brussels, Belgium

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On one side, we find residences and warehouses that lead us to the Wiels, on the
other side, a long colonnade takes us to the Midi Train station. Located between
two different urban universes, the circus school seeks to bring these two
contexts together by reducing them to their fundamental functions, containing
and supporting respectively. This idea guided the project during its design, and
it can be found throughout its morphology.

Then comes the desire to animate the neighborhood, which is quite sad and
neglected in its appearance. To do so, the project seeks to open up as much as
possible to the neighborhood by being in constant visual communication with it
and by creating public, but also private spaces that the students and
inhabitants will be able to appropriate themselves, hence the name “Open House”.
Thus, the ground floor can open itself entirely towards the street in order to
blur the boundary between interior and exterior and therefore private and
public. The cafeteria becomes public and can extend toward the street to create
a large public space. Additionally, various modules, marked in red, are
integrated into the project and create further appropriable sub-spaces. On the
other hand, the program was adapted accordingly. The required classroom and
conference room have been replaced by a large central space on the first floor
containing movable bleachers. This creates a versatile space, able to adapt to
the different needs of the users.

In short, the circus school seeks to create a focal point for both students and
residents, allowing exchanges and gatherings of all sorts in order to bring the
neighborhood back to life.

P-005: Opacity House

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Architecture,
Project

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

2021-12
São Paulo, Brazi

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The project brief asked for a house for a family of 4 including a space allowing
a guest to live independently, as well as a workspace.

The project references the 3 levels of opacity found in Lucien Engels’ personal
house in Zemst by organizing them in stripes and thus structuring the programm
of the house and dividing the site in half. The opaque stripe accomodates the
private areas, such as the bedrooms, bathrooms and the atelier. The translucent
stripe serves as an intermediate circulation space. The transparent stripe
accomodates the common spaces, such as the living room and kitchen.

The project is also a play on filters, inherent to the theme of opacity.
Therefore, a series of filtres controls the way in which the house is
experienced. When arriving, you are greeted by a large wall, entirely hiding the
second half of the site. Only by entering and traversing it you will
progressively discover more and more little fragments until you finally reach
the transparent stripe. Here you will be entirely absorbed into the landscape,
with the limits between interior and exterior becoming blurred.

P-004: Pavillion

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Architecture,
Project

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

2021-10
Ixelles, Belgique

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This project was created over a short period of 2 weeks. The program was simple,
design a pavilion with a space to meditate, a space to read and a space to come
together and talk. Furthermore, we had to take references from Lucien Engels
personal house, which we had studied previously.

The idea of the pavillon was to create a low-tech and low-cost version of Lucien
Engels’ house whilst respecting its proportions and important characteristics,
which are the aspect of a floating box, the opposition between a closed facade
and an open facade, 3 degrees of opacity and a structure which organises the
interior space.

The 3 main materials used are wood for the structure, plywood planks for the
façade and polycarbonate sheets for the translucent windows. These materials not
only fit the concept of low-cost and low-tech but they also provide a calm and
appeasing atmosphere inside the pavilion, which is beneficial for meditation as
well as reading

P-003: Stau 2021 Installation

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Scenography,
Project

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

2021-07
Esch-Sur-Sûre, Luxembourg
Collaborators: Max Havé, Lagerkultur

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The installation was realised as part of the festival site of the STAU 2021
Festival organised by Lagerkultur.

The installation consists of 3 equal rectangular wooden frames in which a metal
grid is suspended giving it the impression that it’s floating. 5 sides of each
module are covered with transparent tarps. The modules can work as display cases
for merchandise as well as lanterns illuminating the festival site, acting as a
sort of waypoint by capturing and refracting the light emitted by the
surrounding light-sources and thus leading the festival-goers towards the main
stage.

Materials:
Pine Wood, Spray Paint, Transparent Tarp, Metal Grid, Metal Chain
