Now this is a story we haven't heard before! And I'm glad it's being told again, especially in this format. Meet "America's First Drag Queen for President"! And spread the word! The Beauty President is a captivating 10-minute short doc film made by filmmaker Whitney Skauge from Breakwater Studios. In 1992, at the height of the AIDS pandemic, drag queen Joan Jett Blakk made a historic bid for the White House as an openly queer write-in candidate. So badass! "Our thing was visibility… the more visible we made ourselves, the less [any bad stuff] happened." Today, Terence Alan Smith, the man behind the persona, reflects back on his place in gay rights history at the height of the AIDS crisis. I admire that he admits it was all about visibility, not really about winning. Even this act made a difference. And I hope this story inspires even more people to make themselves visible. PURPLE' CRIME THRILLER By Alex Billington "Don't flinch." 1091 Pictures has released a trailer for an indie crime thriller titled Blonde. Purple, from English filmmaker Marcus Flemmings. This film is launching on VOD at the end of November if anyone is interested in watching. The story is about an inexperienced criminal who is stuck inside a bank with a teenage hostage after a heist goes wrong. How will he get out? The film follows his journey to escape, while also taking us back to show how he got into this situation to begin with. Starring Julian Moore-Cook, Ellie Bindman, Adam J. Bernard, Jennifer Lee Moon, and Jessica Murrain. This is a much better trailer than I was expecting, by all means, and the film doesn't look bad either. I dig the colorful title cards and introduction, along with all the style and characters. Might actually be an indie surprise? Worth a look. We all know the actor, but not the man himself. Who really was Charlie Chaplin as a person, not just the actor? Find out! Showtime has debuted an additional new US trailer for the documentary film The Real Charlie Chaplin, which recently played at the London Film Festival after first premiering at the 2021 Telluride Film Festival. We also posted the UK trailer a few weeks ago. From the award-winning creative team behind Notes On Blindness and Listen To Me Marlon. For decades he was the most famous man in the world – but who was the real Charlie Chaplin? This traces Charlie Chaplin's meteoric rise from the slums of Victorian London to the heights of Hollywood superstardom, before his scandalous fall from grace. Showtime will debut in the US starting in December. I am so ready to watch this! I've always wanted to learn more about Chaplin and his personal life. Take a look. A big time pickle. HBO has debuted a teaser trailer for a new 4 episode mini-series titled Landscapers, directed by the British filmmaker Will Sharpe, who also made this year's fantastic The Electrical Life of Louis Wain (one of my faves). Supposedly based on a true story, which doesn't seem that surprising to learn, a devoted and mild-mannered couple decides to kill their spouse's parents. They only get in trouble when two bodies are found. Sharpe directs this "exploration of love and fantasy," which is created and written by screenwriter Ed Sinclair. Starring the talented Olivia Colman (who's also in this year's The Lost Daughter film) and Emmy nominee David Thewlis, along with Kate O'Flynn, Dipo Ola, Samuel Anderson, David Hayman, Felicity Montagu, and Daniel Rigby. This is just oozing with style and all kinds of funky shots galore, including a B&W segment when they're in court, along with wide angle shots inside a phone booth and so much more. I'm certainly curious about this. Playing at the Toronto After Dark Film Festival this year is a British indie action comedy film titled Nightshooters, which originally premiered in 2018 at the Raindance Film Festival. It already opened in the UK years ago, but still has never been released anywhere else yet. The film is described as an "action thriller about a group of filmmakers who find themselves on the run from a violent horde of criminals after witnessing a brutal gangland execution." The hapless film crew must use their technical skill and cinematic knowledge to defend themselves. The stunt man is a martial arts master, the special effects guru sets lethal traps, and the sound department strategically lay radio mics to detect when the hoodlums are on their way. It's supposedly a mix of The Raid and Snatch, which sounds like a lot of fun to watch. Hopefully. The cast includes Adam McNab, Nicky Evans, Rosanna Hoult, Jean-Paul Ly, Richard Sandling, Kaitlyn Riordan, Mica Proctor, Nicholas Aaron, Ben Shafik, Doug Allen. From the same director of the Dune Drifter film. It does look dumb, but might still be entertaining. Screen Media has unveiled an early teaser trailer for a horror movie debuting in 2022 - Jeepers Creepers: Reborn. After three films for the original series – the first Jeepers Creepers was in 2001, and Jeepers Creepers 3 came out in 2017 – they're throwing things out and rebooting this one. I know there are many films of the original film, and The Creeper is one mean mofo. But is this going to be any good? Forced to travel with her boyfriend to the Horror Hounds festival, Laine begins to experience premonitions about with the urban myth of "The Creeper". Laine believes that something supernatural has been summoned – and that she is at the center of it all. This new horror stars Sydney Craven as Laine, Imran Adams as her boyfriend Chase, plus Ocean Navarro, Matt Barkley, Alexander Halsall, Jodie McMullen, Georgia Goodman, & Jarreau Benjamin. From the director of the two Iron Sky films. Next year, Evil is Reborn. Watch the Trailer › TwitterRedditGmail › Posted October 28 in Horror, To Watch, Trailer | 3 Comments IS THE MOON NOT THE MOON? 'MOONFALL' CONSPIRACY VIRAL SITE LAUNCHES By Alex Billington Calling all megastructurists! Lionsgate has launched a brand new viral website for the upcoming epic sci-fi disaster movie Moonfall, about the Moon crashing right into Earth. Yes, of course it's directed by Roland Emmerich, and so far it looks awesome. The movie's viral website is a conspiracy theory blog run by the (fictional) Dr. K.C. Houseman, a character in the movie played by actor John Bradley. The site deals with the (very real) conspiracy theory question: is the Moon actually a "megastructure"? Is it hollow? Is it an alien spacecraft? Or is it something else? The original plot synopsis for Moonfall ends with a hint that "our Moon is not what we think it is." But what is it, then? The website is called MoonTruth.net and includes links and info, discussing various theories and scientific details about the Moon and what's really going on up there. Do you believe any of it? More viral websites for sci-fi movies, please! Let's bring them back again. Yep! Marvel Studios has debuted two more 60-sec trailers for the Hawkeye series, the next superhero TV series connected directly to the MCU after "WandaVision" and "Loki". This one takes place in "post-blip New York City", following the former Avenger Clint Barton. His goal is to get back to his family for Christmas. But only with the help of Kate Bishop, a 22-year-old archer with dreams of becoming a super hero. The two are forced to work together when a presence from Barton's past threatens to derail far more than the festive spirit. This might be pretty dang good, folks! Jeremy Renner returns to co-star with Hailee Steinfeld as Kate Bishop, and a fun cast including Vera Farmiga, Fra Fee, Tony Dalton, Zahn McClarnon, Brian d'Arcy James, plus newcomer Alaqua Cox as Maya Lopez. Along with "Lucky" the Golden Retriever. The Christmas vibe of this makes it so magical. Actually looking forward to watching this. Watch the Trailer › TwitterRedditGmail › Posted October 28 in Marvel, To Watch, Trailer | 3 Comments LADY GAGA RULES IN SECOND TRAILER FOR RIDLEY SCOTT'S 'HOUSE OF GUCCI' By Alex Billington "Gucci is… what I say it is!" MGM Studios has released a second trailer for House of Gucci, the other new Ridley Scott-direted movie arriving this year, following the release of The Last Duel a few weeks ago (which we highly recommend you see!). The first Gucci trailer debuted back in the summer, this second one is even better - major I, Tonya vibes in here. Set mostly in 1995, House of Gucci depicts the events leading up to and the aftermath of the murder of Maurizio Gucci, Italian businessman and head of the fashion house Gucci, by his ex-wife Patrizia Reggiani. The film stars Lady Gaga as Patrizia & Adam Driver as Maurizio, along with Jared Leto as Paolo Gucci, Al Pacino as Aldo Gucci, Jeremy Irons as Rodolfo Gucci, Jack Huston, Camille Cottin, Reeve Carney as Tom Ford, plus Mădălina Diana Ghenea as Sophia Loren and Salma Hayek as Giuseppina "Pina" Auriemma. This looks totally crazy! And hilarious and wicked and delectable. Ridley Scott seems to have figured out the best way to tell this wacky high society story. Dive in. This won the Best Narrative Feature award at last year's American Black Film Festival where it premiered. It also played at the Atlanta Film Festival last year. Dwight Henry stars as a former basketball star who battles with his mental illness while scouring the streets of Detroit with a young boy, in search of his lost high school championship ring. "Curtis is about regret, mental illness, and ultimately believing in yourself. My whole mantra for the film is: Everybody has a story. So I'm very grateful to the entire team at 1091 Pictures for seeing the importance of sharing a story like Curtis with the world," director Chris Bailey states. The cast includes Alex Henderson, Kalena Knox, and Thaddeus Street. This looks low key damn good, an indie discovery worth your time. Watch the Trailer › TwitterRedditGmail › Posted October 28 in Indies, To Watch, Trailer | 1 Comment FIRST LOOK TEASER FOR HENRY SELICK'S STOP-MOTION 'WENDELL AND WILD' By Alex Billington "Do it again." Netflix has revealed a fun early teaser trailer in the form of a "YouTube playlist" for the stop-motion animated film from director Henry Selick, who hasn't made any new film since Coraline in 2009. This time he's teaming up with Jordan Peele, who is producing and co-wrote the screenplay with Selick and is providing one of the voices in the film, for a new stop-motion feature in the works at Netflix. Wendell & Wild is about two hellishly funny personal demons of a teen named Kat, which face off against a nun and a pair of goth teens. The teaser is actually a YouTube music playlist, featuring songs playing with an animated boombox. "Keep an eye on the boombox for new tracks, new sneak peeks, and more punk stuff." The only voice cast announced so far: Jordan Peele & Keegan-Michael Key. It has been way too long since we've seen a new Henry Selick stop-motion film! Can't wait to see more from this soon. For now, enjoy the music. Watch the Trailer › TwitterRedditGmail › Posted October 28 in Animation, To Watch, Trailer | 1 Comment OFFICIAL US TRAILER FOR ASGHAR FARHADI'S OUTSTANDING NEW FILM 'A HERO' By Alex Billington "It's the talk of the neighborhood. People called to say you make them proud." Amazon has unveiled a new US trailer for the outstanding new film from Oscar-nominated Iranian filmmaker Asghar Farhadi, best known for A Separation, The Past, The Salesman, and Everybody Knows. His latest is titled A Hero, and it first premiered at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival earlier this year, where it won the Grand Prix prize during the festival. Rahim is in prison because of a debt he was unable to repay. During a two-day leave, he tries to convince his creditor to withdraw his complaint against the payment of part of the sum. But things don't go as planned. When he returns a woman's purse full of coins, he is hailed as a hero, but the complexities of society and old grudges come back to ruin his newfound fame. Amir Jadidi stars as Rahim in one of my favorite performances of the entire year (seriously). I saw this film in Cannes and it was one of my favorites of the fest, I've been thinking about the story ever since. This kind of thing happens to so many good people.
