Making investing more accessible for women and developing financial literacy provides the necessary tools and resources for women to start investing early and thrive in the financial world. This is critical. I love what Sallie Krawcheck the co-founder and CEO of women's investing platform Ellevest, has achieved. In 2024, there is just no justification for employers to pay women less than men for equal work. We know how to assess like work, work rated as equivalent, and work of equal value; if there is no genuine material factor to differentiate the work, there is no excuse for anything less than equality of terms. This is such a basic principle, yet too often employers still get it wrong. As they are our best hope to reach our 2030 goals. Right now, we would need to work 26 x faster just to reach SDG1. - “For women in Uganda to access gender equality, access to education/ healthcare isn’t enough. International programmes to support Uganda is crucial. “ - “Women living in countries in conflict and post conflict should be provided support to access employment and safety. Without peace and security, they won’t be able to thrive. “ And here is my favourite quote from today: “When women prosper, the invest in their children, they break century old policies. Women’s courage is everyone’s capital.” #unitednations #undelegateuk #inclusivepolicies #equity #equityfunding #genderpolicies #sdgs2030 #womensrights #womenempowerment #girlsrights UN Women UK 28,193 followers 9mo Day 1 of #CSW68 is underway! Perfectly summed up by #unwomenuk below. My one takeaway from today is that whilst there is focus and push on getting women into STEM and women into leadership positions - like all problem statements, the answer lies at the root cause. The analysis shows that childhood conditions and poverty from all sorts of violence are the biggest reasons for lack of female pipeline - so we must address these and start there. Around 130 million (slightly more than one in three) students between the ages of 13 and 15 are victims of violence in everyday life. Approximately 15% of young people feel lonely. Worldwide, one in four (176 million) children under the age of 5 live with a mother who has been the victim of numerous cases of intimate partner violence. Poverty is present in the desperation of people looking for meaningful employment and in the dreams of women who lack the means to achieve financial independence. In other countries, children have no childhood and adults struggle to earn enough to live on. 160 million girls and boys between the ages of 5 and 17 work in conditions that violate their rights. Women and girls married too young, burdened too early with caring responsibilities, and deprived of education and access to a livelihood are overly represented among the poor. The solution is absurdly transparent: poverty reduction strategies must focus on women who work too hard for too little pay and take on the social responsibility of caring for children but generally receive little to no support. The reality is stark: globally, children and their primary caregivers (mostly women) make up the majority of those living in poverty. And if we stay on our current path, by 2030, an estimated 8% of the world’s female population—342.4 million women and girls—will still live on less than $2.15 a day. So, why aren’t we doing more to shine a light on the gender dimensions of poverty and tackle it head-on? * 20 1 Comment Like Comment Share * Copy * LinkedIn * Facebook * Twitter To view or add a comment, sign in * Soroptimist International Great Britain and Ireland (SIGBI) 1,311 followers 3w * Report this post Poverty increases vulnerability to Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG).
