PRESENTATION: COMPACT URBANISM

As the world continues to urbanize and grapple with climate change, cities in
the 21st Century must be designed with greater capacity for density to function
efficiently and reduce per capita carbon footprints. Rapidly developing cities
around the world must find models for density that allow them to grow and
thrive.

Carlow spent over a decade documenting and analyzing the architecture and
urbanism of Hong Kong, a city that hosts some of the most intense built
environments on the planet. The city’s urbanization has produced unparalleled
living conditions in terms of scale and density.

As a socio-political microcosm, Hong Kong has been dealing with the impacts of
hyper-dense urban environments since the mid-twentieth century. Due to lack of
space, topographical constraints, political conditions, and extremely high
population density, the city has become an incubator for the development of high
rise architecture for high density living.

Carlow will share work from his teaching, research and his recent book, Cities
of Repetition, that offer strategies for density, urban compactness and carbon
conscious development for the decades ahead.

MINISTERIAL SESSION: EMPOWERING GLOBAL CONSTRUCTION LEADERSHIP, WHERE ARE WE
TODAY AND WHAT IS NEXT?

The global construction industry is rapidly evolving. Technological
advancements, climate pressures and projects demand have disrupted the
construction industry, prompting leaders to reassess their strategies and
accelerate public and private sector partnerships.

Nations have varied economic structures, resources, capabilities, and starting
points for future-readiness, meaning there is no one-size-fits-all solution. How
can government leaders leverage their unique strengths and starting positions to
develop effective construction project strategies? How can they balance
infrastructure demands, workforce and supply chain challenges with technological
progress, environmental responsibility, and economic growth?

PRESENTATION: INFLUENCE OF DIGITALIZATION AND AI ON MEGA PROJECT (HIGHRISE
BUILDING PROJECTS) OPERATIONS AND HANDOVER

In the realm of large-scale construction projects, the integration of
digitalization and AI-driven tools has revolutionized operational efficiency,
particularly during the critical handover stage. This session will focus on the
implementation of a Digital Sustainable Integration Model (DSIM), which merges
digital twin technology, AI instruments, and project control tools such as BIM
and resource-loaded baselines. The DSIM approach provides an accurate,
comprehensive record of project execution, including as-built documentation,
material approvals, service records, and communication logs, all consolidated
within a digital twin portal. This enables seamless handover and empowers
facility managers to select the most suitable service providers, particularly
for complex, high-rise, and mega projects, reducing overestimations, time, and
resource consumption.
