‘USING AI, FARMERS CAN ADOPT DIGITAL REVOLUTION’

Panaji: Widespread automation in the Indian agri-ecosystem may be far from
reality, with mechanisation existing in only certain pockets. Yet, farmers can
harness artificial intelligence (AI) to optimise farming practices, said Kisan
Mitra co-founder and CEO Azhaan Merchant.
“To maximise the profit or income for farmers, transitioning from traditional
crops like paddy or wheat to horticulture, specifically fruit farming, can lead
to higher earnings.

However, this transition is not without its risks, including crop perishability
and the potential for pest attacks. That’s where AI steps in,” said the
agri-tech entrepreneur at the recently concluded ThinkAg Harvesting Tomorrow
Summit in Goa.
The idea is to create a smart advisory system using AI that provides tailored
advice to farmers. “We collect important information on soil quality, irrigation
methods, and crop selection. Using predictive analytics, we can advise farmers
on the best practices for cultivation, ensuring they have the right tools and
knowledge from pre-plantation to harvest,” he said.
Since many farmers already use apps like WhatsApp to communicate, Merchant says
that they even use its existing AI chatbot (recently introduced by Meta) to get
real-time advice that fits their needs. “As smartphone penetration in rural
areas continues, we anticipate an exponential change in how farmers access
information and resources. For instance, farmers can speak to the bot in
Marathi, and we can provide real-time, hyper-personalised advice based on their
specific needs,” he said.
