Bill Cassidy in the crosshairs on confirming some of President-elect Donald Trump’s more controversial nominations for cabinet posts — particularly the proposed health chief Robert F. Kennedy Jr. Cassidy says the focus misconstrues his process in coming to a decision on any major issue. True, Cassidy hasn’t given the full-throated endorsement that most GOP senators have for the most controversial of Trump’s nominations. But that’s not his style — at least until he has met with them personally. Still, the attention on Cassidy is understandable given the confluence of an approaching election, his past troubles with Trump, and his upcoming position as the chair of the committee that oversees the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, or DHHS, that RFK Jr. would lead if a majority of senators agree. Axios, a digital news outlet, earlier this month reported that the Baton Rouge Republican “is being squeezed between his anti-Trump past and his future role presiding over one of Trump's most controversial nominees.” The website said the situation “leaves Cassidy balancing what’s good for his reelection against his health care expertise.” Other national media have made the same point. Cassidy is one of the few Republicans left in Congress who voted to convict then-President Trump on impeachment charges stemming from the Jan. 6 insurrection. Two years from now, Cassidy faces reelection in which he first must win a primary for Republicans, many of whom are still angry about his position in 2021. Already Cassidy has picked up one opponent, State Treasurer John Fleming, who is running to the right of Cassidy and reminding voters at every opportunity of the senior senator’s vote against Trump. As the incoming Senate Health Education Labor and Pensions committee chair, Cassidy plans to hold a hearing on Kennedy’s nomination. Following the usual protocol, Kennedy is set to meet with the Republican Health Education Labor and Pensions committee staff on Thursday. He then will schedule a sit down with Cassidy. Most of Kennedy’s career has been as an environmental lawyer. He’s never run a large organization, and DHHS has a $1.7 trillion budget with authority over a baker’s dozen agencies that deal with food, drugs, medical research and public health. RFK Jr. wants to restrict ultra-processed foods and reduce agricultural pesticide use. But it’s Kennedy’s positions on public health agencies and policies, such as opposing fluoridated water and vaccinations, that have concerned health officials. The New York Times reported Monday that 77 Nobel laureates urged senators to vote against Kennedy. “Placing Mr. Kennedy in charge of DHHS would put the public’s health in jeopardy and undermine America’s global leadership in the health sciences,” their letter stated. The HELP committee won’t take a confirmation vote. But, as a member of the Senate Finance Committee, which is handling the official confirmation, Cassidy will vote on the panel’s recommendation to the full Senate on Kennedy’s appointment. RFK Jr. can only afford to lose the support of three of the Republican senators, provided that Vice President-elect JD Vance is available to vote and all 47 Democrats stand together. So Cassidy’s name has been mentioned by numerous outlets as among the handful of Republicans who might oppose Kennedy and other controversial Trump nominees. As a senator charged with “advise and consent” of presidential nominations, Cassidy follows a procedure and won’t be rushed. “I have a process I go through,” Cassidy said, which includes study of a candidate’s writings, background reports, and then a personal meeting. “I’d rather make my own kind of impressions including what is written, but potentially conversations, before I make an announcement,” Cassidy said. He supported Treasury secretary nominee Scott Bessent after meeting with him last week. “I look forward to working with him on the economic issues facing our nation, such as trade and Social Security insolvency,” Cassidy tweeted Wednesday. He said he is open to Kennedy as health secretary. From what he’s seen so far, Cassidy said Kennedy has championed issues like healthy foods and more transparency for public health. As a physician Cassidy, disagrees with Kennedy’s desire to remove fluoride from drinking water and his suspicion of vaccines. “The evidence is pretty strong that when you put fluoride in the water, it can reduce cavities by as much as 20% or more,” Cassidy said. “We know that vaccines save lives.” Then Cassidy warned against reading anything into him mentioning disagreements over certain issues as having anything to do with his ultimate decision on the confirmation.
