CITY OF CALGARY ANNOUNCES PHASE 1 OUTDOOR WATER RESTRICTIONS

The City of Calgary has announced Phase 1 outdoor water restrictions effective
today, August 15, 2023, until further notice.

“We continue to see dry conditions and record low natural flow levels on the Bow
and Elbow Rivers,” explains Nicole Newton, Head of Natural Environment and
Adaptation. “Environment Canada is also predicting a warm and dry winter, so
this is an important measure to help us maintain Calgary’s water supply at the
Glenmore Reservoir all the way to the source, as well as support our neighbors
and the health of the river downstream.”

The quality of the city’s drinking water remains high; it’s a matter of
quantity, not quality.

These restrictions apply to all customers using water from the City of Calgary,
including all Calgary residences, businesses and City operations. Calgarians can
still use water outside during Phase 1; however, there are restrictions on how
and when water can be used, as noted in the article Regulations of the water
supply company:

 * Use of the sprinkler for watering lawns, gardens, trees and shrubs is limited
   to one day a week for a up to a maximum of two hours, according to a special
   schedule determined by the house number:
   * House numbers ending in an even number you can pour water Wednesday or
     Saturday.
   * House numbers ending in an odd number you can pour water Thursday or
     Sunday.
   * Watering is only allowed between 4am and 7am, 9am and 11am or 5pm and 10pm.
     Always check the soil moisture first and only use the necessary amount of
     water.
 * Anytime, any day, Calgarians can:
   * Water their gardens, trees and shrubs using a hand watering can or hose
     with a shut-off spray.
   * Water new grass or seeds.
   * Fill an outdoor pool or hot tub.
   * Use the water collected in the rain barrel.
   * Water for construction purposes such as grading, compaction or dust
     control.

Such outdoor watering activities are not allowed:


 * Washing of outdoor surfaces, windows, exterior surfaces of buildings,
   sidewalks, driveways or walkways. As an alternative to cleaning hard
   surfaces, use a broom.
 * Washing the car on the driveway or street.
 * Filling fountains or decorative elements.

There are exceptions for health and safety reasons or essential business needs:

 * Cleaning of outdoor surfaces in child care facilities, food and beverage
   establishments and kennels and animal care facilities.
 * Vehicle washing in compliance with health and safety regulations.
 * I sell watering plants, bushes and trees.
 * Exterior window washing and car washing provided by a company licensed to
   provide these services.

We know we can count on Calgarians to do their part to help us through this
drought; however, while The City strives to educate citizens, violations of
these restrictions can result in fines starting at $400.
