memoQ TMS (or update memoQ TMS)
UPGRADE MEMOQ TMS (OR UPDATE MEMOQ TMS)
memoQ and memoQ TMS get regular updates. Updates are very minor new versions
that contain bug fixes only. An update has the exact same major and minor
version number, but a higher build number. For example, 11.1.6 is an update to
11.1.5.
A few times a year, new versions are also released. These new versions contain
new functionality as well as bug fixes. A new version has a different version
number - maybe even the major version number is different. For example, 11.2.1
is a new version - an upgrade - to 11.1.6.
In the deployment tool, use the Upgrade [product] command link to install both
updates and upgrades.
You must have a license to upgrade: You can upgrade to a new version of memoQ
TMS if your organization has a subscription, or a valid support and maintenance
agreement (SMA). When you purchase memoQ or memoQ TMS, you will also get one
year of support and maintenance. If the support and maintenance agreement
expires, you can continue to use your existing licenses, but you cannot install
new upgrades. To do that, you need to extend your SMA with one more year, for an
annual SMA fee. If you are unsure if your organization has a valid SMA, contact
memoQ sales.
Check database privileges: This can be a problem if the user who upgrades is not
the same as the user who installed memoQ TMS in the beginning. The user who
upgrades memoQ TMS must be in the sysadmin role over the SQL server and in the
db_owner role over the memoQ TMS database. To set this up, you need the sqlcmd

When there is an update or a new version, you need to update or upgrade memoQ
TMS manually. Unlike the memoQ desktop program, memoQ TMS is not updated
automatically.
To upgrade to memoQ TMS 11.2 from an earlier version, you need SQL Server 2016
or newer.
What to do if you have an earlier SQL Server version?
1. Download SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) from the Microsoft Learn
website and install it.
2. Start SSMS, and connect to the SQL Server database instance.
3. Create a backup of memoQ TMS's database.
4. Download the recommended setup package of SQL Server 2022 Express from
Microsoft's website, and install it.
The Express edition is free, but has limited storage. If you plan to have
many large projects or resources, purchase the Developer, Standard, or
Enterprise edition.
5. Create a new database instance. Add the user who has access to the former
memoQ TMS database.
6. Delete the old database from the old SQL instance.
7. Restore the database backup to the new instance.
8. Open the file %PROGRAMDATA%\MemoQ Server\Configuration.xml in a text
editor.
9. Update the memoQ TMS's database connection string to
<SQLConnectionString>Data Source=localhost\[new_instance_name];Initial
Catalog=[new_database_name];Integrated Security=True;Connect
Timeout=300</SQLConnectionString>
10. Save the file.
You're done!
To update or upgrade your copy of memoQ TMS, do the following:
1. Log in to the memoQ TMS computer through Remote Desktop.
2. Download the newest memoQ TMS setup package from our Downloads page: Click
the orange Download button, and in the memoQ TMS row, click the Download
link.
3. When the download is complete, launch the file you downloaded.
4. Windows may ask you to confirm to run the file. Click Yes or Run.
5. When you run the setup file, first it updates the Deployment tool on the
server, then starts it.
6. The memoQ TMS Deployment Administration window opens. You need the topmost
section (memoQ TMS):
Check if the Upgrade link is available: If the version you downloaded is
higher than what is installed on the server, the Upgrade memoQ TMS link
will be available.
7. Stop the memoQ TMS before you upgrade or update it: Click Stop memoQ TMS.
8. Click Upgrade memoQ TMS. The upgrade program starts. First, it makes a
backup of the database and files of memoQ TMS. When you upgrade or update
memoQ TMS, you cannot skip the backup:
9. If drive C does not have enough space, or you need to save the backup,
elsewhere: Click the ellipsis button, and choose a different location
(computer or drive or folder). Click Next. The upgrade program will back up
the existing files and database of memoQ TMS, and then update it. During an
update, only the program files are replaced, so the update process will end
in the following message after a minute or two:
10. Click Finish. The Deployment tool returns.
11. Start memoQ TMS again: In the memoQ TMS section, click Start memoQ TMS.
memoQ TMS may take one or two minutes to start for the first time. If it
starts successfully, the word Running appears in a little window over the
Deployment tool window.
Error while creating database backup? If you get an error message that the
database could not be backed up, you may not have enough permissions to do
so. If SQL Server was not installed by the Deployment tool itself (that is,
together with memoQ TMS), make sure that the user backing up memoQ TMS has
the bulkadmin or sysadmin server-level role on the SQL Server. To check and
set this up, you need the sqlcmd program. To learn about the actual

If, at the end, you see the word Stopped: This means that memoQ TMS was unable
to start because an error occurred. Most of the time, this happens because memoQ
TMS is not activated. As a first step, go back to the memoQ TMS activation
program, and check if the licenses are all in order (none of them are Invalid,
for example). If the licenses are all valid, there may be another problem. To
