RECAP: THUNDER VS. HAWKS

THE REPORTERS' NOTEBOOK

BOX SCORE: OKC VS. ATL

By Nick Gallo and Paris Lawson | okcthunder.com

THE BIG PICTURE

Stops were nearly impossible to be found in the first half of this one, as both
the Thunder and Hawks created not just lanes, but boulevards into the paint
which resulted in finishes down low and kickouts for 3. By halftime of Wednesday
night’s start of a three-game homestand for the Thunder, the game was tied at 77
all.

The Thunder built a seven-point first half lead, but Atlanta used a 13-2 run
spanning the quarter break to even things back up, initiating a back-and-forth
affair that resulted in 15 ties and 16 lead changes. Atlanta took a five-point
lead to close the third quarter, then landed an uppercut with a 10-run right out
of the gates in the final frame. Aaron Wiggins helped stabilize the action with
a response three-pointer that started a 9-0 Thunder run. In clutch time, the
Thunder’s 28th such game this season, rookie Jalen Williams blocked a shot and
picked Hawks guard Trae Young’s pocket out top, which resulted in a pair of fast
break dunks to help give the Thunder a chance.

In the end, Atlanta forward John Collins and guard Dejounte Murray combined to
hit four free throws down the stretch to seal a 137-132 shootout loss for the
Thunder.

OBSERVATIONS

FIRST QUARTER

Nick: When all five guys on the floor can playmake, that means Mark Daigneault
is able to be creative about the way he deploys players in offensive actions.
One such example was when Lu Dort was used as a roll man on a screening action.
As he slipped out of the screen quickly and put pressure on the paint, Hawks
defenders converged and it freed up Jalen Williams as he relocated up the left
wing. Dort saw his teammate moving into his vision and found him for a wide open
catch-and-shoot 3, which splashed through the net. The bucket was one of six
3-pointers that the Thunder made in the first quarter alone.

Paris: Jalen Williams floated up a strong push shot that fell straight through
the middle of the hoop. Atlanta, looking to hurry up and get the ball inbounds,
sent a hurried pass into the backcourt. Tre Mann sniffed out the play seconds
before the pass was made and intercepted the ball at full speed. The second year
guard exploded off the ground, brought the ball behind his head and threw it
through the hoop with ferocity. It was the perfect exclamation point for the
Thunder’s first quarter that featured a season-high 43 points on 69-percent
shooting from the field and 60-percent from the 3-point line.

SECOND QUARTER

Nick: Aaron Wiggins wasn’t in the original rotation on Wednesday night, but he
jumped into the fray in the seconds quarter and immediately made an impact with
some strong defensive contests on the perimeter before generating six points for
OKC on the other end. After a Kenrich Williams missed 3, Wiggins worked himself
into good position to snap up an offensive rebound, and he immediately looked to
the perimeter to kick the ball out to Isaiah Joe for 3. On the very next
possession, Williams thanked Wiggins with an in-rhythm pass to the shooting
pocket, and Wiggins buried a three from nearly the same spot that Joe did one
play sooner.

Paris: Ousmane Dieng missed the previous 23 games for the Thunder with a
non-displaced fracture in his wrist. In the second quarter, Dieng made the first
shot he put up – a catch-and-shoot 3-pointer. The last game Dieng played was
against the very same Atlanta Hawks back on December 5.

THIRD QUARTER

Nick: Coming out of halftime, the focus for the Thunder was squarely on the
defensive end of the floor. Breaking a 77-77 tie at the break, the Thunder
jumped out to a 10-5 run and it was catalyzed by a defense-to-offense sequence.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Lu Dort combined to blow up a roll on the baseline
by Clint Capela, with Gilgeous-Alexander making an initial deflection, then Dort
smartly tipping the ball back to his teammate to prevent the taller Capela from
grabbing it. The result was an immediate fast break opportunity, with
Gilgeous-Alexander racing up the floor, shimmying the man in front of him and
flushing down a one-handed dunk. Gilgeous-Alexander scored 32 of his 36 points
through three quarters in this one. It was his 28th 30-point game of the season,
the second most in the NBA this season.

Paris: Lu Dort wrestled the ball away from a loose-ball scrum under the rim. He
quickly threw the ball ahead to Jalen Williams who erupted out in transition and
elevated for a one-handed slam. The play continued OKC’s run of turning its
defense into offense in the third quarter. After a raging offensive performance
in the first half, the Thunder came out of the locker room in the third quarter
with a premium focus on the defensive end. The Thunder forced four Atlanta
turnovers and generated six points off those turnovers in the third frame alone.

FOURTH QUARTER

Nick: Excellent in-the-moment communication for the Thunder during the midst of
a 7-0 burst to cut Atlanta’s lead down to just six points, as Jalen Williams and
Gilgeous-Alexander coordinated a screening action at the top of the key.
Williams dummied the screen then slipped out of it, rolling quickly to the rim
through the gap in the defense. Gilgeous-Alexander bounced a pass into the lane
for him, and Williams finished with a crafty layup up and under the two
converging defenders for two crucial points.

Paris:  After Atlanta opened the fourth quarter on a 10-0 run, the Thunder fell
behind by its largest deficit of 15 points. OKC called a timeout to regroup and
after the break, the Thunder responded with a 9-0 run of its own. Aaron Wiggins
sparked the run with a 3-pointer and then it was all defense that forced Nate
McMillan to call a timeout. Kenrich Williams and Aaron Wiggins both came up with
steals that set OKC out on the break and led to easy buckets in transition.

QUOTABLES

“To guard a team that's that dynamic we had to be a lot tighter than we were
tonight and it was just kind of a death by paper cut. It was kind of everything.
It was transition, it was fouling, there was a little bit of the glass and then
just the lack of discipline, in our help. We were just a step late to a lot of
things tonight. When we watch that game, we're gonna be like, ‘man we let that
one go’ because of how controllable some of those plays were.” - Head Coach Mark
Daigneault

“We got stops in that stretch and got consecutive stops. That's what allowed us
to get out and play in transition and make our way back into the game. ” - Shai
Gilgeous-Alexander

WHAT'S NEXT

The Thunder’s three-game homestand continues with a Friday night battle against
the Cleveland Cavaliers, then a showdown with the reigning NBA Champion Golden
State Warriors on Monday inside Paycom Center.
