A 24-year-old man has brilliantly avoided paying sky-high rent in London, by
taking on the unenviable task of renovating the 'cheapest canal boat on the
internet' in just three months, which, when it was purchased, looked more like a
rubbish skip.
George, who preferred to not share his surname, decided to buy the boat after
discussing with his friends the best way to live in London. Now, he is well into
the project, having already spent thousands on making the wreck liveable.
He said: "They say the two best things about owning a boat are the day you buy
it and the day you sell it. Cross one job off your list another comes up the
bottom but you got to just keep up the morale. If you don’t laugh you cry, but
thankfully no tears yet."

He told MyLondon the idea came about when talking to his friends about living in
London. He said: "I was sat on my friends sofa and we were chatting about how
would we live in London and we got chatting about houseboats and they were going
for something like £70,000, £200,000 and I was like, 'I could get one cheaper
than that'. It was really hard to buy one, I was looking on Facebook marketplace
and eBay quite a bit.
"I had a couple boats fall through, found this guy, he wanted £6,000 for this
and I said, 'no way', it wasn’t worth £6,000, so I low balled him and we met
half way."
Now the renovation is well underway, he that the others in the yard working on
boats currently either say he's brave or got more money than sense. He said: "I
wanted to do something with my life, make something for myself. Buy a boat see
what happens."

Being from Swindon, George stays with friends when in London so he can work on
the boat continuously. He's pumping all his savings into the restoration with
each job taking a new chunk of his finances.
He said: "I’ve been keeping hold of my receipts but I have not been really
tallying how much I’ve been spending. I think I've spent about £1,500 so far. So
that’s for metal for the hull and isolation. I expect my flooring to be maybe
£700. BOAT is an acronym for Bring Out Another Thousand, so boat bathroom is a
thousand right there, boat kitchen is another thousand. That’s probably what
I'll have to spend most of the money on, making it nice."
He's not going into this blind. George has a degree in mechanical engineering
and has a workshop at home where he does carpentry and metalwork which you can
see videos of on his YouTube channel.

He told MyLondon that he hopes to have the boat canal-worthy in the next month
so that he can work on the inside while its moored somewhere. Then, by summer,
the boat should be ready and he can finally enjoy the true delights of being a
boat owner.
He added: "There are some places on the canals which are just empty, no ones
there. I think that's what's so desirable about this boat life, once you have
this boat and you don't need to pay for it because you bought it. You’re one
step closer to financial freedom and being able to do what you want or give you
enough time to figure out what you want to do. That’s what it is for me is
trying to figure out what's next and what do I want to do with life."
George says this is one of the draws of the project - he doesn't want to feel
'tied down' and 'trapped in normal society'. When he finished university he was
working at an engineering company but left because it wasn't for him, adding: "I
was very much number crunching and that didn’t give me satisfaction in life.”

Since he started renovating the boat, he has been documenting his restoration
efforts on his TikTok channel GrasscutterTV. Despite the huge task he's set
himself, as he's already shown on TikTok, he's not overwhelmed by his challenge
of restoring the canal boat in three months.
He added: "My first TikTok got two million views and I think that's just because
of how I worded it." At the time of writing, his first video has racked up more
than 2.2 million views and shows the decrepit state that the boat is in. The
50ft canal boat is in dire need of extensive work to it but slowly and surely,
George is getting through it all, showing his loyal fans each step of the
journey.
"I’ve had a YouTube channel for a year and a bit. After a year, I had 84
subscribers and I was like this is great, just a bit of fun. Then my girlfriend
said, take my old phone and use it for TikTok because I can't get it on my
phone. It started more as a way to keep people updated with what I'm doing and
now it's kicked off and I'm not really ready for it. I now get people realising
who I am. I’ll be on the Tube and get people pointing at me and now this is life
you know."
George is excited for the project to be done and to enjoy the labour of his love

another boat after this. I'm not going to do that to myself. I'm out the boat
game after this. Once I finish the boat I'm going to carry on my career as a
lawn mower racer and try to become the national champion at lawn mower racing."
