OKLAHOMA HOSPITALS CUT STAFF AMID RISING EXPENSES

Hospital systems across Oklahoma are reducing staff and increasing efficiencies
in an attempt to maintain patient care amid rising costs.

“We know these are challenging times right now in health care, just
unprecedented, really,” Jean Hausheer, leader of the Healthier Oklahoma
Coalition COVID-19 Task Force, said Tuesday during a press briefing. “We are
very resilient though, and we will make it through this difficult time.”

“We’re in a situation now which we haven’t seen in over 40 years, and I can say
this is going to be probably true of every clinic, every physician’s office, and
every hospital,” said Dale Bratzler at the University of Oklahoma.

“We can only increase our revenues so much, and we get paid according to what
insurances pay,” Bratzler said. “We’re faced with a situation where we’ve had
massive inflation, so the cost of doing business is going up no matter what, and
we cannot control that. We have a situation also where we cannot raise revenues,
so every facility is going to have some issues there.”

“We’re still reeling from the effects of the pandemic, and we are still taking
care of COVID patients by the way,” said Patti Davis, president of the Oklahoma
Hospital Association.

Unlike the last two years, there will be no more financial support this year
from the federal government, and hospitals are still experiencing supply chain
issues regarding materials and pharmaceuticals.

Staffing is a huge expense for facilities, Davis said.

“With the health care professional shortage, there’s such high demand that
salary is way higher in expense, so hospitals are trying to manage their
business knowing they’ve got expenses they can‘t control very well,” Davis said.
“They’re having to be judicious considering the financial constraints they are
facing. They are having to look at increased efficiencies.”

Health care is not like other businesses in that it cannot reduce staff below
levels that ensure quality of patient care, Bratzler said.

“Our number-one priority is patient care, so we will do whatever it takes,”
Bratzler said.

Integris Health and OU Health both announced significant staff reductions in
recent weeks, both issuing statements focused on the importance of maintaining
care during an unprecedented situation.

“The post-pandemic recovery for hospitals has proven to be financially
challenging,” reads the statement issued by Integris, which eliminated 200
positions.

“Hospitals across the industry are projected to have their worst financial year
in decades,” reads the Integris statement. “The reasons for the financial
challenges are multifold, but some include a dramatic rise in expenses due to
labor shortages and supply-chain disruptions, and significantly lower patient
volumes compared to pre-pandemic days. Because of these reasons, health systems
across the nation are being faced with difficult decisions.”

Davis noted that 60 of those positions eliminated were unfilled at the time, and
many of the 140 jobs that were lost may have been in administrative positions.
Hospitals are focused on keeping up staffing levels at the bedside.

On Jan. 6, OU Health made a similar announcement, streamlining roughly 200
positions into 100.

“In order to grow and adapt to industry changes, we need to perform in terms of
the quality of our services, patient experience, and the efficiency and
effectiveness of our processes,” said OU Health President and CEO Richard
Lofgren in the statement.
