GOSSIP GIRL 2021

I AM IN NO WAY SAYING I COULD HAVE CREATED A BETTER GOSSIP GIRL... ACTUALLY, I
AM.

Caroline Canny
20h
Fordham University

When I first heard of the Gossip Girl remake, I was excited, very excited. We
all had a tough year and what could be better than a revival of one of our
favorite shows. Gossip Girl did its job as a teen television drama: distract you
from your own life and made you far too interested in the scandalous lives of
Manhattan's elite. (see what I did there ;) The new Gossip Girl does the
opposite of that. There are storylines so boring that make me want to fill out
my Study Abroad application that I've been neglecting since June. In reality,
not that boring but you get the idea.

The casting is all over the place. Some actors embody their character extremely
well, see Jordan Alexander as Julien Calloway, Thomas Doherty as Max Wolfe, or
Zion Moreno as Luna La. While others such as Jonathan Fernandez as Zoya's dad (I
have no idea what his character is named), Tavi Gevinson as Kate Keller, and
Evan Mock as Aki completely butcher every scene. I will say that I am rather
impressed with the ages of some of the actors as Whitney Peak who plays Zoya is
only 18 and the Emily Alyn Lind, the actress who plays Audrey is only 19. But
the performances some of these actors are giving are horrendous. With an HBO
Budget and Carla Hall (that still confuses me) I am very disappointed. Zoya's
dad speaks like a robot, Aki puts as much energy into a scene as I put in
clearing out my inbox, and Kate Keller's voice makes me physically upset. Also,
I understand the significance of having Tavi Gevinson play the role of Gossip
Girl, however, she is still awful. The other actors are fine but not one actor
in the entire show is genuinely good.

I would like this show better if it was not titled Gossip Girl and was not
affiliated with Gossip Girl. There is genuinely no point for Gossip Girl, except
maybe in the first episode. The number of plot holes within the storyline of
"Gossip Girl" itself is horrendous. Also, the entire point is for "Gossip Girl"
to be this ruthless truth sayer who ruins lives, and this Instagram account
focuses on kindness and social justice. I get where they were trying to go with
this but it was executed completely wrong. The teachers make themselves
insufferable leaving you to want them all to be fired.

Gossip Girl has always had a way to make you hate the "good guys" and love the
villains. If you liked the Humphreys and Vanessa more than Chuck and Blair then
you are the problem. The show, both times, tries to create these "relatable"
lower economic class characters which just became crybabies and make you side
more with the power-hungry villains. The show is supposed to center around
greed, wealth and now it's centered on infographics. The only characters I
genuinely like are somehow the villains: Aubrey, Max, Monique, and Luna.
Julien's dad is sexy so he gets a free pass on his horrible acting.

We don't want to see this influencer-activist nonsense. We want to see affairs,
extreme drug use, and daddy issues. If it were up to me? A 2021 Gossip Girl
would involve the better girls wearing Staud and Laligne at Lola Taverna judging
the ones at Baby Brasa wearing Zara.

xoxo, Gossip Girl.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN IF SOMEONE SAYS PFP?

WHETHER YOU ARE A BABY BOOMER OR GENERATION X, IT IS LIKELY YOU USE
ABBREVIATIONS IN YOUR EVERYDAY DISCOURSE. FROM TEXTING, EMAILING OR EVEN
CONVERSING FACE TO FACE IN REAL-TIME, ABBREVIATIONS CONSUMER OUR LANGUAGE AND
THE WAY IN WHICH WE COMMUNICATE WITH ONE ANOTHER.

Have you noticed that abbreviations seem to be the norm nowadays?

Whether you are a Baby Boomer or Generation X, it is likely you use
abbreviations in your everyday discourse. From texting, emailing or even
conversing face to face in real-time, abbreviations consumer our language and
the way in which we communicate with one another.

But more so than for just conversing, using abbreviations highlight certain
trends or topics that are important to the mainstream public. Who can forget
back in the day when LOL went viral? It was a cute moment where the old-timers
thought it meant lots of love and the youngsters used it to mean laugh out loud.

If you used it, you certainly thought you were cool—regardless of the context
you meant by it. And the same goes for all the other trendy abbreviations.
Currently, those on social media love to post a picture and use the caption
IYKYK. This abbreviation means if you know, you know and implies a secondary
context of needing to know more about the picture than what just meets the eye.
It also offers a chance for people to relate, if they have been in a similar
situation that the image is representing.

But IYKYK is not the only abbreviation currently on-trend. PFP has also become
the norm. But have you ever wondered to yourself, what does PFP mean and how can
you use it in a conversation so that it makes sense?

Well not to worry. We are here to help you master the use of one of the
trendiest abbreviations and give you multiple scenarios where it works to use
PFP.

Defining PFP

PFP does not simply mean one thing. In fact, it is an abbreviation that can be
used in multiple ways, depending on the topic of conversation.

Scenario #1:

The first use of PFP that is used for mainstream conversational purposes is a
picture for proof.

We live in a world where we are bombarded with images daily and have become
routine to share the moments of our lives through snaps on Snapchat, Instagram
and Facebook. In fact, images have become so dominant in our social media lives
that people expect photographic evidence of something now.

PFP when used in this context could play out in a conversation like this:

Person A: "Guess what, I just got sat next to Katy Perry at IHOP!"

Person B: "What? PFP!"

Or, in the context of posting on social media, Michael Phelps—the most decorated
Olympian of all time—could play into this abbreviation trend by posting a
picture of all his Olympic medals with the caption PFP. Guaranteed this post
would quickly go viral.

Scenario #2:

The second way in which PFP is used in mainstream conversation today is as
profile picture.

Practically all social media channels require users to have a profile picture
for recognition. Depending on the platform and the persona that the user wants
to take, options for a profile picture are endless. But on average, most people
put a lot of time and effort into curating the perfect image to represent
themselves. Others make humorous selections.

PFP in this context could play out in a conversation like this:

Person A: "Check out my new PFP. Dustin took it for me."

Person B: "That is fire! My PFP is so old I need a new one."

Or, in the context of social media, you could share an Instagram story or
Facebook post that says something along the lines of "Hi followers, new PFP.
Show it some love!".

Other Meanings of PFP

Now, while these to phrases are the most common meanings for PFP, that goes
without saying that there are numerous other phrases or names that PFP could
represent. Everything from a Personal Finance Professional to Pizza for
Philadelphia, this abbreviation is endless with possibilities.

But the chances are, these meanings will rarely be used unless amongst a niche
group of people who would already have a heads up that the meaning of PFP is
something a bit more obscure.

So it is important to read your audience before throwing out this abbreviation
into the conversation.

Closing Thoughts on PFP

When using abbreviations such as PFP, we are making a phrase and the
conversation in general much more personal.

By using PFP with others, you are acknowledging that you both have upfront
understanding and connection to the phrase, which automatically makes your
dialogue more intimate. It also forces your brain to engage more in the
conversation.

How will you be using PFP in the future?

WHAT YOU ACTUALLY NEED FOR YOUR COLLEGE DORM ROOM

BECAUSE THE PINTEREST LISTS ARE GREAT, BUT THEY LEAVE OUT SOME IMPORTANT
DETAILS.

Katherine Millard
24 August
Ohio University

Christion Tyler Edwards

"What to bring to college?" the eternal debate. It's a fine line of wants and
needs, and not wanting to forget something you'll wish you brought while also
avoiding extra clutter of things you'll never use. Thus, I am providing a list
of things left off the checklist of laundry hampers and mattress toppers (yes,
please get these) of the items you will use.

1. MULTIPLE PHONE CHARGERS

https://unsplash.com/photos/WkJPu3rEeJE

Honestly, I'd say ideally have three: one near your bed, one near your desk, and
one for your bag. You'll be on the go a lot, and a phone without battery will
quickly mess up your day. Plus, this way when one charger inevitably breaks, you
always have a backup.

2. A TRASH CAN WITHOUT HOLES

3. Trash Can pngimg.com

Step one is to figure out if your dorm comes equipped with trash and recycling
cans, because if not that's a definite necessity. Equally important, however, is
to ensure that trash can has no holes. You will probably be throwing up in it at
some point, and when you're already emptying your stomach on a dorm room floor,
you don't need a second problem to deal with. Long story short: no holes.

3. PICNIC BLANKET

https://unsplash.com/photos/G0zoYDFvUXQ

At the very least a blanket you're comfortable with getting dirty. When it's
nice out, everyone will be outside on whatever version of a college green you
have, and you don't want to get one of your sheets or nice blankets dirty. Have
one just for grass and spills - I promise you'll use it.

4. THEMED THINGS

https://www.pinterest.com/pin/193936327693057184/

Old Halloween costumes, things from the Fourth of July, anything you wore for a
themed football game? Bring it! Stuff it all into a little bin for themed things
and it will save you so much money not having to go out and purchase something
new for every themed party.

5. SWEATSHIRTS

Sweatshirts Sweaters Exhibition - Free photo on Pixabay pixabay.com

While you really don't need to bring any t-shirts to college, you will live in
sweatshirts. Bring enough that you can get through one laundry cycle with, but
probably not any with your high school on them. Those Pinterest lists make it
seem like you'll be publicly shamed if you wear high school things, and while
that's really not the case, it's an easy way to limit yourself. Overall, don't
bring every single one you own, just enough to stay comfortable.

6. ICE CUBE TRAY

1. Cube Ice pngimg.com

But really. Britta filters can take up a ton of space when you only have a
mini-fridge, and room temperature water just isn't really it. I have the silicon
ones that are thin so they fit in any water bottle and are easy to pop out.
Stick them in ur freezer and just refill whenever - total life saver!

7. MULTIPLE WATER BOTTLES

Start Using Reusable Water Bottles
https://pixabay.com/en/bottles-water-steel-glass-7...

For my final tip, I'd recommend 3-4. One for water to stay by your bed, one to
take with you, and two for non-water essentials, like coffee or other drinks.
This way your water bottles stay clean for water, and you can always be
hydrated.

While these are my essentials, you know yourself best so just plan accordingly.
No matter what you bring, you'll have an amazing experience.

ROCK MUSIC, HEARING LOSS, AND SAFE LISTENING HABITS

MANY ROCK BANDS HAVE A REPUTATION FOR HIGH VOLUMES. SOME MAY EVEN CONSIDER IT
THEIR DEFINING CHARACTERISTIC. VARIOUS BANDS IN ROCK HISTORY HAVE USED HIGH
VOLUMES TO ENSNARE FANS, INCLUDING DEEP PURPLE, THE WHO, AND BLACK SABBATH—AND
IT WORKS.

Many rock bands have a reputation for high volumes. Some may even consider it
their defining characteristic. Various bands in rock history have used high
volumes to ensnare fans, including Deep Purple, The Who, and Black Sabbath—and
it works.

Concerts are a wonderful experience for musicians and concertgoers. However,
when volume levels reaching 130 decibels, both hearing loss and tinnitus can
occur. Above 85 decibels, hearing loss is possible. Lovers of rock music should
consider taking a hearing test, as often as feasible, to address any hearing
issues before they worsen.

UNDERSTANDING HEARING LOSS

We hear when sound waves hitting our eardrums cause them to vibrate, a sensation
we perceive as sound. The ear is divided into three areas—the visible outer ear
is responsible for directing sounds to our inner ear.

The middle ear has tiny bones that receive sound from the eardrums and amplify
them before sending them onwards. The internal ear converts sound vibrations
into electrical signals for interpretation by the brain.

Loss of hearing is a decrease in the ability of the ears to detect or hear noise
around them. Loud music, especially in rock concerts, can damage parts of your
inner ear leading to temporary hearing loss, permanent hearing loss, and damage
to the nervous system.

TEMPORARY HEARING LOSS

"For any musician to lose their hearing, it feels like amputating a hand," Steve
Lukather, Toto. Noise-induced hearing or temporary hearing loss is a result of
continuous exposure to loud music. Hearing Loss can affect one or both ears and
can be hard to detect until it becomes permanent.

Noise above 85 decibels (DB) can lead to temporary hearing loss, and gym workout
sounds can hit over 100 DB while rock concerts exceed 115 DB. After leaving a
loud rock concert, people usually experience ringing of the ears, muffled sound,
and an inability to hear faint sounds; this condition usually lasts for a few
hours or a few days (Loud Noise).

Hair cells inside the ears bend a lot when subjected to loud music. They regain
their upright shape after the loud noise decreases. This exertion is a recipe
for hearing loss.

Brian Johnson of the rock group AC/DC was diagnosed with hearing problems in
2016. Doctors cautioned that he faced permanent hearing loss if he continued
with tour performances.

PERMANENT HEARING LOSS

Continuous damage to vital parts of the ears might cause deafness or tinnitus (a
condition that causes a constant ringing of the ear). Especially vulnerable are
teenagers who use headphones to listen to metallic rock at extremely high
volume. Exposure to high decibels of sounds at rock concerts can also lead to
irreversible ear damage and loss of hearing.

Continuous loud music usually overworks sensitive hair cells located in the
inner ear, and slowly but steadily, the hair cells begin to die off if the trend
continues.

The cochlea contains about 16000 hair cells, of which 30-50% can die and remain
undetected by hearing tests. The earliest diagnosis of this damage usually comes
too late when most hair cells are irreversibly damaged.

Neil Young, a musician, and songwriter avers that his music career in the '90s
damaged his ears, and he now suffers from tinnitus.

DAMAGE TO THE NERVOUS SYSTEM

Loud rock music above 110 decibels can affect listeners' nervous systems. This
happens when loud music destroys the protective cautions of the ears. When the
protective layers are damaged, the transmission of nerve signals between the
brain and the ears is disrupted, and a person's ability to hear is permanently
done.

SAFE LISTENING HABITS

When you hear good music, you may be tempted to turn up the volume to
ear-piercing levels. Using loud headphones can result in damage to the inner
workings of the inner ear. Therefore, it is imperative to be cautious while
enjoying your music to prevent permanent hearing loss.

Never tune your headphones at above 60% volume: 15 minutes of sound played at
100 decibels from a music player is sufficient to cause hearing damage (The
National Campaign). Your music volume should never exceed 60% volume.

Never listen to music for more than 1 hour a day: Though high decibels of over
114 decibels can damage the eardrums in a matter of minutes, listening to music
at a constant 80 DB continuously over a few hours can equally lead to war
damage.

Invest in Background Noise Cancelling Headphones: These excellent pieces of
equipment are great at reducing environmental sounds enabling you to hear crisp,
clear sounds from your music player. Cushioned music players are also perfect
for lowering background clutter allowing you to enjoy serene sounds without
turning the volume.

Use earplugs: It is advisable to use earplugs when you go to loud concerts or
noisy factories.

Over the ear Headphones: Over the ear, Headphones sit right outside the ear
canal entry and shoot sound waves directly into your eardrums over the ear.
Continuous, direct sound waves can damage your hearing ability over time.

Avoid turning up headphones in loud places: The temptation to turn up the volume
in noisy places is a crucial cause of hearing problems. Wait until you leave the
loud environment, and you can safely listen to your music.

Regularly consult a specialist. Regular screenings of your ears can bud hearing
problems in their infant stages before they become too serious about treating.

In conclusion, rock music as a genre of sound involves playing electric
instruments at extremely high volume (over 100 DB), a leading cause of temporal
hearing damage, permanent hearing damage, and damage to the nervous system.

Many current and former rock musicians and listeners of metallic rock have
reported suffering from various stages of hearing loss, including tinnitus and
nerve damage. It is advisable to take precautionary measures when listening to
loud music to avoid ear damage. Action like using headphones at low volumes and
using earplugs can protect your hearing in the long term.

T-MOBILE IS FACING TWO CLASS-ACTION LAWSUITS AS A RESULT OF A CATASTROPHIC DATA
BREACH.

LAWSUITS ARE PILING UP IN THE WAKE OF THE MASSIVE DATA BREACH.

SubhanShoaib
23 August

1039

Two class-action lawsuits have been filed against T-Mobile in the wake of a
massive data breach that left millions of customers' personal information
exposed.

Overall, at least 47 million people were affected by the data breach.
Motherboard first reported the hack, noting that a hacker was selling portions
of the data on an underground forum. T-Mobile said it was investigating the
claims, but soon confirmed the broad strokes of the data breach.

T-Mobile said the hack impacted various kinds of customers, and the data that
was compromised included names, drivers' licenses and identification
information, Social Security numbers, and more.

In a suit filed late last week in the United States District Court for the
Western District of Washington, it claims that T-Mobile maintained the personal
information in a "reckless manner" that was "vulnerable to cyberattacks."

"Plaintiffs' and class members' identities are now at considerable risk because
of Defendant's negligent conduct since the private information that T-Mobile
collected and maintained is now in the hands of data thieves," the suit reads.

Meanwhile, as Fox Business reports, another suit was filed just a few days later
that says T-Mobile violated the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA).

"Plaintiffs now seek compensation under the CCPA and principles of common law
negligence, unjust enrichment, breach of implied contract, and breach of
confidence, for their damages and those of fellow class members," the suit
reads. "Plaintiffs also seek injunctive relief to ensure that T-Mobile cannot
continue to put its customers at risk."

The suit also notes that T-Mobile has had at least five data breaches over the
past three years, citing news stories about them. T-Mobile says it is offering
affected customers identity protection services for free over the next two
years, a decision that the suit calls "insufficient."

"As discussed above, the threat of identity theft and fraud from the data breach
will extend for many years and cost plaintiffs and the classes significant time
and effort," the suit reads.

WHAT YOUR GREEN SAYS ABOUT YOU: OHIO UNIVERSITY EDITION

DOES ANYONE EVEN LIVE ON NORTH?

Katherine Millard
23 August
Ohio University
872

https://www.honorsociety.org/university/ohio-university-main-campus

While there are no bad greens at Ohio University, they all have a unique vibe.
Here's yours.

1. WEST GREEN

https://images.app.goo.gl/CGmJ2U8Qmq1HHXzs9

Do you have the best dining hall? Absolutely. Do you have the best dorms? Not
quite. West Green is for people who want to make a lot of friends, but then
stick to talking to those friends alone. You bask in the quiet joy of having the
prettiest green on campus, and you probably go for runs. You're likely a nursing
major or some sort of science. And you definitely abuse the frozen yogurt
machine in Boyd.

2. DIRTY SOUTH

5 Truths And Misconceptions About Living In Dirty South

Dirty South gets its name for a reason. You may not care about aesthetics, and
your room may be a bit of a mess, but in looking past the superficial, you're
able to find a lot of fun. That said, you're always late to things, and you
don't go out as much simply because it's a longer walk. You rarely eat at Boyd,
and you for sure try to convince your friends that the concrete bridges are
"actually really nice you guys!"

3. NEW SOUTH

https://www.ohio.edu/housing/tanaka-hall

Despite being roped in with Dirty South on location alone, these are the nicest
dorms on campus. You may have gotten kicked out of your coveted second-year spot
last year when they made your nice new room a COVID suite, but had you gotten to
live there it would've been in luxury. You love that you're right near Ping,
even when you don't use it, and you're a convenient middle man between both
dining halls. You fly a little under the radar, but once someone notices you,
they realize you're one of the coolest people on campus.

4. EAST GREEN

https://www.pinterest.com/pin/386042999281349542/

Despite having no dining hall, East stays the superior green on campus. They're
close enough to everything to have fun and are some of the friendliest people on
campus. There are plenty of pets on East, and while it's a younger green, it's a
lot of fun. Plus, they all have amazing legs from taking Jeff hill eight times a
day.

5. OFF CAMPUS

https://www.apartments.com/the-summit-at-coates-run-athens-oh/gk7sktw/

You're an upperclassman, and you were very excited to move into your apartment
with your friends, only to discover the big apartment buildings in a town like
Athens are basically dorms but farther away. At least you get your own bathroom!
You tend to keep to yourself and your friends during the week and then go into
town like crazy on weekends. You're currently "learning" to cook. Unless, of
course, you're in a Greek Life house, in which case you're going crazy every
night, and you still can't cook at all.

6. NORTH GREEN

You do not exist. No one lives here.

WHAT IS WILLPOWER AND WHY IT HAS NO LIMIT

WHEN ASKED WHETHER WE WANT TO HAVE BETTER SELF-CONTROL, MOST OF US WOULD RAISE
OUR HANDS. WE CAN ALL THINK OF MOMENTS WHEN WE HAVE GIVEN OURSELVES TO A
TEMPTATION, OR WHEN WE KNOW WE SHOULD DO THE OPPOSITE, LACK THE FORCE TO ACT.

Miller Leo
22 August

1558

When asked whether we want to have better self-control, most of us would raise
our hands. We can all think of moments when we have given ourselves to a
tentation, or when we know we should do the opposite, lack the force to act.

We feel exhausted and focused, and motivation sinks as we proceed through our
hectic schedules, and we no longer have the strength to resist terrible
judgments. That's called ego-depletion.

The term 'ego' has been popularized by Sigmund Freud. He thought that the ego
was responsible for regulating id, a more primitive, unconscious organization
impetuous' demands. The ego would sometimes rule the id, the id would other
times improve the ego.

Ego-depletion leads to situations in which the impulsive id is more likely to be
won.

In this blog, we explain that what is willpower and there is no limit of your
willpower. Therefore, read the blog in full concentration.

The Marshmallow Resist

Walter Mischel revealed that variations between persons start early in one of
the most famous auto-control studies. He has children who can pick whether to
stay 15 minutes between a tenting marshmallow now or two. The persuasiveness of
the id was of course emphasized by children sitting before leisurely treatments.

It was not that this study showed a difference in the will of the children, but
that those who could restrain themselves went on to live more successful
academic lives.

In 2010, 1,000 people were born for 32 years and were followed by another study
in New Zealand. All this time the researchers collected the measurements of
their willingness both self-reported and observed.

Those with higher self-control later in life, no matter their intelligence,
race, or social position, become happier, healthier, and richer.

"By comparing grades with about three dozen personality features, self-control
was the sole feature to predict the graduate average." (Roy Baumeister)

Training in willpower

Baumeister is the author of 'The willpower: the rediscovery of the greatest
human strength' and a major research scientist in self-control. He came to know
the similarity between willpower and a muscle through his study.

Just as when you push up so much that you extend your arms longer, it results in
less capacity to keep your impulsivity restrained. However, the stronger you
are, the more you practice. If you take a brief glucose shot, you can also get a
quick physical or mental boost to change the desire to give in for some time.

The similarities come to an end here. Michael Inzlicht and Brandon Schmeichel
believe the loss of willpower is related to a change in motivation, attention,
and emotion rather than burning a reserve of energy.

They found that providing encouragement — that their work on Alzheimer's
research — was sufficient to motivate participants beyond the ego-depleted
management group.

There is also the view that the loss of self-control depends just on how we
define the problem. "I was good all day, I worked hard, I went to the gym.

If it is our thinking that willpower changes our approach to our activities and
alters how we think maximum self-control may be possible.

No Sight End

In comparative comparison with two participant groups, Veronika Job, Carol
Dweck, and Gregory Walton sought to examine this opportunity. The other thought
that there was no such limit. One believed it willpower was a finite resource.

You observed that there was no evidence of ego depletion among individuals who
thought they had no limit, while those who believed in a limit to your willpower
exhibited the usual impacts.

Our theories seem to dictate how weariness is going to affect us and, if
willpower is a true determinant of subsequent performance, it presents a
compelling argument for adapting our mental patterns.

That's easier to say than to do. Our lives are full of physical and mental
habits, and changing our way of thinking and reacting to ego depletion is like
breaking bad habits.

This is best done by replacing it with a good habit.

Practicing restraint does not increase your self-control in the same way that
exercises enhance your muscle, but it may assist transform your thinking from "I
can't" to "I can do anything."

It improves the use of willpower on the one hand, as found by Megan Oates and
Ken Cheng. Students who were enrolled in or compelled to manage their funds in
other fields later favored themselves – they smoked and drank less, and studied
more.
