(KBAK/KBFX) — UPDATE (5:30 P.M): KCFD said at 5:24 a.m. Wednesday firefighters responded to a report of ahazardous materials leak at Taft Manufacturing Company, located at 19705 South Lake Road. The first crew arrived and could see a vapor cloud in the facility from a distance. As a crew arrived on the scene, a vapor cloud within the facility could be seen from a distance. At that time, officials made the call to order nearby residents to shelter in place via Genasys Protect and ReadyKern. The Hazardous Materials Response Team got ready and went into the building to investigate. The cloud that they had seen, now dissipated. No hazardous gases were found with atmospheric monitors, includingAcrolein. Officials saidA 375-pound cylinder that was the source of the earlier vapor cloud was thoroughly checked and no active leaks were found. The air was clear, and no hazard was found. Yet, firefighters stood by as Kern County Environmental Health worked to depressurize the cylinder, making it incapable of posing a threat. According to ReadyKern, the hazmat gas leak has been mitigated, the vapor has dispersed. It said there is no further hazard to the public. ----------- A highly toxic flammable gas leak prompted shelter-in-place order in the area east of Taft Wednesday morning. The Kern County Fire Department posted on X" on November 6, 2024, at around 7:54 a.m., that they were investigating reports of a hazardous chemical release west of Gardner Road, between South Lake Road and Cadet Road. A ReadyKern alert said, "A Highly Toxic Flammable Gas Leak has become a threat to areas near East of Taft. Exposure to the vapor cloud can cause severe health problems. DO NOT go outside." KCFD has asked residents in the area to shelter in place until further notice. Close windows and doors, and bring in pets if it is safe to do so. KCFD said to stop any form of ventilation through your residence by turning of air conditioning units and swamp coolers.
