The consortium will lead the construction and maintenance of the APRICOT large-capacity unique-routed optical submarine cable within Asian countries and the U.S.. 2AFRICA CABLE EXTENDS TO THE GULF, PAKISTAN AND INDIA, CONNECTING 33 COUNTRIES Details Winston Qiu 2Africa 17 August 2021 According to stc, the 2Africa consortium, comprised of China Mobile International, Facebook, MTN GlobalConnect, Orange, stc, Telecom Egypt, Vodafone and WIOCC, announced on Monday the addition of a new branch to the 2Africa cable. The branch will extend 2Africa’s connectivity in to The Gulf region. The Gulf branch has been named 2Africa Pearls. 2Africa cable system will connect 46 cable landing stations in 33 countries in Africa, Asia and Europe. 2AFRICA CABLE ADDS 4 NEW BRANCHES TO CONNECT 26 COUNTRIES Details Winston Qiu 2Africa 17 August 2021 The 2Africa consortium announced the addition of four new branches to the 2Africa cable. The branches will extend 2Africa’s connectivity to the Seychelles, the Comoros Islands, and Angola, and bring a new landing to south-east Nigeria. So far, the 2Africa cable will have 35 landing points in 26 countries, being the largest subsea cable project in the world. RUSSIA BUILDS POLAR EXPRESS SUBSEA CABLE ALONG ARCTIC COASTLINE Details Winston Qiu Polar Express 13 August 2021 At a press conference in Moscow arranged by the state-affiliated news agency TASS and Morflot, the Federal agency on Sea and River Transport under the Ministry of Transportation of Russia, Russia unviled its plan to build the Polar Express subsea cable, a 12,650km subsea cable along Russia’s entire Arctic coastline, from Murmansk to Vladivostok, with 6 fiber pairs and system capacity up to 104 Tbps. SPARKLE BOOSTS ITS NIBBLE BACKBONE WITH INFINERA’S ICE6 800G SOLUTION Details Winston Qiu Nibble 12 August 2021 According to Infinera, Telecom Italia Sparkle has selected Infinera’s ICE6 800G-capable coherent technology to enhance its new Mediterranean and European Optical Backbone, Nibble. Deploying Infinera’s ICE6 solution will enable Sparkle to launch new 400 GbE services over its existing infrastructure while boosting its network capacity by up to 54%, as demonstrated in a recent trial on two of Sparkle’s major routes in Italy. The Mistral cable system is also known as the South Pacific Submarine Cable (SPSC), connecting Puerto San Jose (Guatemala) with Valparaiso (Chile), with additional landing points in Salinas (Ecuador), Lurin (Peru) and Arica (Chile). SPARKLE'S BLUEMED CABLE SHARES FIBER PAIRS IN GOOGLE'S BLUE AND RAMAN CABLES Details Winston Qiu Blue-Raman 29 July 2021 Google announced today to build Blue and Raman cable systems, in collaboration with Sparkle and others. Sparkle also announced the collaboration with Google. Further more, Sparkle revealed that its private BlueMed cable system shares fiber pairs in the Blue cable system. Sparkle’s BlueMed further extends by sharing the wet components of the Blue system and adding new branches in the Mediterranean. BW GROUP ACQUIRES HAWAIKI CABLE Details Winston Qiu Hawaiki Cable 28 July 2021 Hawaiki Submarine Cable Limited Partnership ("HSC LP") announced on Tuesday the sale of 100% of the shares of the company to BW Digital Pte. Ltd., an affiliate of BW Group Limited, headquartered in Singapore. Media reports said the transaction price was about A$500m (US$350m). (“PCLI”), owner of the Southern Cross Cable Network in the USA and the US landing party for the Southern Cross NEXT cable (“SX NEXT”), announced on Tuesday (July 20) the landing of the Southern Cross NEXT cable (“SX NEXT”) at the HMB IX facility in Hermosa Beach, California. CROSSCHANNEL FIBRE TO CONNECTS EQUINIX LD4 AND PA7 Details Winston Qiu CrossChannel Fibre 19 July 2021 According to Equinix, CrossChannel Fibre will connect to Equinix data centres LD4 in London and PA7 in Paris, via landings in Brighton and Veules-les-Roses. CrossChannel Fibre will be the first subsea fiber-optic project laid across the English Channel in nearly 20 years and is due to be ready for service in Q4 2021. GO LAUNCHES LAVALETTE CABLE LINKING MALTA TO FRANCE AND EGYPT Details PR Release LaValette 14 July 2021 GO announced on Tuesday (July 13th 2021) an investment of €25 million in a 3rd submarine cable, which has been named as ‘LaValette’. This forms part of the global PEACE System (Pakistan East Africa Connecting Europe) project – a multi-million-euro connectivity effort which consists of a submarine cable emulating the old oriental silk route, connecting countries across the globe on its way from Asia to France.
