And they make great chocolate. Step out of the modern world and into the ancient
realm at Belize's largest Maya site, where you'll spend the day wandering
through a city that once rivaled Tikal in political influence and, for many, is
more impressive today. Standing in the central area of temples, palaces, craft
workshops and markets, you'll feel the power and glory of ancient Caracol. At
ft, Caana which means Sky Place is still the tallest building in Belize.

In addition to being the country's pre-eminent archaeological site, Caracol also
teems with jungle wildlife. Floating through a darkened cave river on an
inflated tube with a helmet flashlight is a remarkably calming experience. Delve
even further into the bowels of the earth with an experienced guide to discover
some remarkable cave systems and subterranean rivers known as Caves Branch.

At the Nohoch Che'en Caves you'll float through an underground network,
experiencing wonders unseen in the world above. Arguably Belize's most beautiful
stretch of road, the winding Hummingbird Hwy offers unparalleled views of the
Maya Mountains as it passes through jungles, citrus orchards and tiny villages.
The Hummingbird also offers plenty of reasons to stop for a few hours and there
are some fine upmarket lodges and budget guesthouses along the way. Explore St
Herman's Cave, hike the jungle loop trail, take a dip in the crystal-clear Blue
Hole, zipline through the jungle or rappel down Angel Falls.

It's hardly off the beaten path, but at the end of a long peninsula there's a
reason so many feet beat the path to Southern Belize's most popular beachside
resort village. Placencia is just too chilled out to not spend some time
kayaking, sailing or simply walking barefoot on the beach by day, and drinking
rum cocktails by night.

As for dining, it has most of Southern Belize's best restaurants and freshest
lobster. Get here by road, sea ferry or the Hokey Pokey water taxi.

DATING IN BELIZE

Halfway between the hustle of Dangriga and the tourist vibe of Placencia lies
slacked-out Hopkins , a low-key Garifuna village where life hasn't changed much
in decades. Children walk the town's one street selling their mothers' freshly
baked coconut pies and chocolate brownies; local men catch fish by day and play
drums at night; and the pace of life is pleasantly slow. The beach is slender
but on a fine day the view out across the Caribbean is sublime. The 'baboons' at
this sanctuary are not really baboons, but rather black howler monkeys, an
endangered species in Central America.

The 'sanctuary' is not exactly a protected area, but more a network of private
properties where the howlers live. Thanks to this community-based, grassroots
effort, property owners have agreed to preserve their land for the benefit of
the resident monkeys. Although the sanctuary encompasses about 20 sq miles,
guides take tourists to a small area where the welcoming troop allows for
up-close observation of the funny monkeys.

Even people philosophically opposed to the concept of caged creatures will
approve of this humane, earthy and educational zoo. As a halfway house and
rehabilitation center for injured, orphaned and rescued Belizean jungle animals,
the Belize Zoo is a fabulous and friendly place to get a good look at the dozens
of species of indigenous animals and birds that are difficult to spot in the
wild.

I visited San Ignacio with my wife for a week and took four tours with MayaWalk.
Their guides were knowledgeable and friendly and the whole experience went off
without a hitch. The best advice is to allow enough time to look around, mix a
lot and be bold. Belizeans have a reputation for being polite and sometimes shy
of visitors.

For those experienced in the nightclub scene, every municipality in Belize has
one or more nightclubs. Here you will encounter a wide range of party-goers,
from bank employees, and public service managers, but also everyday girls
seeking to unwind from domestic weekday duties or looking for a new date or
boyfriend.

But far more fun and diversity can be found at the many village and municipal
fairs held throughout the country. These include mechanical rides, fair
attractions and dances. Here the full range of Belizean men and women are at the
fore and arguably offer the best opportunity to meet and link up with a
potential date. The best advice is to check the local T.

These are usually featured on commercials before the evening news at pm on
weekdays. Special promotions, dance club specials and fairs are listed. Although
not formally established here, ladies from Central America are oft regarded as
gypsies in Belize. If you do not speak Spanish, it is up to you learn some basic
Spanish. No need to learn classic Spanish literature. Caves were the portal
between the tangible human world and the invisible world of the gods, a place
called Xibalba. It was here that the ancient Mayan Shamans performed their most
sacred rituals and ceremonies and this was the underground domain of their gods.

A guided exploration into this very spectacular cave system begins with a
rigorous minute hike on uneven jungle rainforest terrain.

Search experiences that may have limited interaction with crowds. I did not have
a child and really don't know if they provide booster seats. Rating Clear. The

the Maya Shamans and priests once traveled to reach these ceremonial chambers.
The guided tour will have participants crawling through cracks and crevices
beholding spectacular cave formations, learning about its history and geology,
as well as viewing ancient Mayan pottery, beads, obsidian knives and even human
skeletal remains that have been calcified in the limestone floor dating back 2,

Every driver working for Untame Belize has years of experience, has passed an
advanced course in defensive driving, and is a true professional. Together with
twin-town Santa Elena, on the east bank of the Macal River, this is the main
population center of Cayo, with lots of good budget accommodations, decent
restaurants and frequent transport. The northern edge of the town lies along the
Mopan River which also forms the border with Guatemala.

The town was established in the 19th century, mostly by immigrants from
Guatemala. During the first years of the 21st century, the town experienced a
rapid boom in population. Benque is mainly a suburban settlement with schools,
supermarkets and other facilities. Its ramshackle streets are alive with
colorful characters who represent every facet of Belize's ethnic make up,
especially the Creoles. And while the urban scenery may involve the occasional
fetid canal or grungy slum, it also features handsome colonial houses, seaside
parks, bustling shopping areas and sailboats that bob at the mouth of Haulover
Creek.

You certainly won't find it dull. And while it doesn't top the list of Belize
tourist destinations, visitors often admire the city's raffish charms and
cultural vibrancy. Lately the government has gone to greater lengths to make
tourists feel safe, with some success.

Despite sharing a similar ramshackle appearance and funky coastal vibe with
Belize City, Dangriga doesn't have a big-city feel and is generally a safe place
to explore. This is a proud, festive town, one that does its best to make the
most of its vibrant Garifuna heritage, but apart from a handful of worthwhile
cultural sights it's not a tourist hangout like Hopkins or Placencia — most
travelers are either changing buses or getting a boat out to the central cays.

If it's laid-back ambience, varied accommodations, boat access to private
islands and some of the best restaurants in Southern Belize, this beachfront
hangout may be for you. During the full moons of May and June especially, divers
and snorkelers are drawn here as whale sharks come to feed in the nearby waters.

Special Offer. Enjoy an easy, economical exit from Belize with this shared
departure transfer from your San Ignacio hotel to Philip S. This prompt,
door-to-door shuttle service will pick you up at your hotel and take you
directly to the international airport near Belize City, approximately a 1.
