National Log in CORONAVIRUS COVID-19: THREE POSITIVE CASES FOUND IN NEW PLYMOUTH - THREE CITY SCHOOLS TO CLOSE ON FRIDAY Matthew Rilkoff18:34, Dec 02 2021 * Facebook * Twitter * WhatsApp * Reddit * Email SIMON O'CONNOR/Stuff Devon Intermediate School has closed following the discovery of three positive Covid cases in New Plymouth. New Plymouth’s Devon Intermediate School and Marfell Community School will close on Friday and a busy bakery is a location of interest following the discovery of three positive cases of Covid-19 in the city. The cases are one adult and two children from the same household. The family has a known link to an existing case in Rotorua. Taranaki’s Public Health Unit has commenced a case investigation and contact tracing is underway. On Thursday evening New Plymouth’s Devon Intermediate School principal Jenny Gellen sent a notice out stating the school was aware of a confirmed Covid-19 case in “our community”. SIMON O'CONNOR/Stuff The central New Plymouth school willbe closed on Friday. Gellen advised that information on what people need to do will come by midday Friday on the school Facebook page, Skool Lopp, and email. “In the meantime, please stay home until we can provide a further update.” Marfell Community School posted a similar message to their Facebook page on Thursday. “In the meantime, stay home, stay calm, be kind, look after each other, until we can provide further update,” the post by principal Janet Wilson said. MARFELL COMMUNITY SCHOOL/Stuff Marfell Community School will be closed on Friday. West End School, which is near Devon Intermediate, has also announced it will close on Friday as a precautionary measure. On Thursday night neither the Ministry of Health, nor the Taranaki District Health Board, had stated the schools were locations of interest. However the Blagdon Hot Bread Bakery has been revealed as a place of interest. SIMON O'CONNOR/Stuff The Blagdon Hot Bread Bakery is a popular food stop a short drive from Devon Intermediate School. People who visited the shop between 9am and 11am on Thursday, November 25, have been asked to self-monitor for Covid-19 symptoms for 10 days. “If symptoms develop, get a test and stay at home until you get a negative test result.” The TDHB has recommended anyone with symptoms, no matter how mild, to get tested. New Plymouth Mayor Neil Holdom said he understood the family involved had followed all the Covid-19 protocols. “And for that we are grateful. “I would urge everyone to remember these are our people, to protect their privacy and avoid speculation about their identity on social media,” he said. SIMON O'CONNOR/Stuff New Plymouth Mayor Neil Holdom said the community should avoid speculating on the who the cases were. (File photo) Holdom said the cases were a reminder to those who had not yet been vaccinated that Covid was here and vaccination was the best means of protection. “Now more than ever we need to follow the protocols with mask wearing, contact tracing, hand washing and social distancing providing effective protection to reduce the spread of this disease and minimise the impacts on our health sector,” he said. Holdom said the discovery of the cases would be particularly stressful news for those in Taranaki’s health sector. “As a community we need to work together to support our health and essential services workers, who do such fantastic work for all of us every day. If you are feeling unwell get tested and stay at home until you get your results,” he said. VANESSA LAURIE/Stuff Six cases were found in Stratford last month, leading to a surge in testing.
