Color of Change is uplifting our Black Wall Streets and calling for a reparative investment to help reinvigorate the spirit of the pinnacles of Black success. HISTORY BANKING & FINANCE Durham, NC housed the richest Black owned company, The North Carolina Life Mutual Insurance Company. EDUCATION Tulsa's Greenwood district had the first Black nationally known school system. HOSPITALS Columbia, SC ; Tulsa, and Boley, OK had several Black owned medical facilities to serve their communities. 1890'S 1900'S ENTREPRENUERSHIP Columbia, SC boasts to have had hundreds of Black business owners (barbers, grocery stores & funeral homes). HOUSING & COMMERCIAL DEVELOPMENT Birmingham, AL offered many Black architects & construction companies. BLACK ENTERTAINMENT Tulsa's Greenwood district had two Black owned theaters for Black entertainment. BIG INDUSTRY Boley, OK had a Black owned electrical plant, Ice plant & water system. Since the early part of the 1900s, Black Wall Streets existed throughout the country, most namely areas of the South. With few safe spaces for Black banking and business, Black people created safe havens to meet economic and financial needs. Now, on the 100th anniversary, the Centennial Commission and city received $30 million for its celebration. We're demanding they give 80% to those still waiting for justice.
