Hair/Splintertweeze tweezers. Both have held up beautifully across years of
long-term testing.

Malynda Vigliotti, who owns Boom Boom Brow Bar in New York City, and Dr. Marie
Jhin, the director of Premier Dermatology in San Francisco. We also read up on
what makes a good tweezer for removing foreign objects, consulting experts from
the the Centers for Disease Control (CDC).

WHO THIS IS FOR
Whether to perfect brow shape, turn a unibrow into two, or keep a perennial chin
hair at bay, tweezing is an inexpensive method for targeted hair removal that
you can do at home. By uprooting entire hairs, tweezing offers more precise and
longer-lasting removal compared with shaving, doesn’t burn like waxing can, and
doesn’t necessarily require professional assistance like threading often does.
Tweezers are also a handy implement to have in your cabinet for first-aid
matters, though you’ll ideally want a separate pair with a different tip shape
than that of the pair you use to pluck hairs. The CDC advises using fine-tipped
tweezers to remove ticks. Such tweezers are also useful for digging out
splinters and other foreign objects that can become embedded in skin, like
cactus spines.

HOW WE PICKED AND TESTED

Surveying the available models online, at drugstores, and in big-box stores, we
looked for tweezers with:
* The right tips for the job: When it comes to grabbing and plucking hairs, our
experts agreed that slant tips are the right tools. The wide flat tip allows
you to get one side clearly beneath the hair, squeeze, and then yank in the
direction of growth, said Vigliotti. “I do not love a pointy tip near the
eyeball,” she added. Pointy tips are better for digging out ingrown hairs,
removing ticks, or dislodging other things that may become superficially
embedded in skin.
* Sharp tips: Sharper tweezers make gripping the brow hair easier, said
Vigliotti.
* A sharpening service: Tweezers become blunter with use, so the option to send
them to the company for rejuvenation is a plus. (Though it is possible to DIY
sharpen with a nail file.)
* Fun colors: It’s a personal preference, but colorful tweezers are easier to
find on a crowded bathroom counter or in a bag than a plain silver pair.
* No gimmicks: You can buy tweezers with LED lights or attached brow brushes.
These are unnecessary, according to Vigliotti, and we agree.
We selected tweezers that met those criteria, looking for brands that were
well-reviewed, came recommended by readers, or were simply widely available at
drugstores, just to see how they stacked up. We tried them all out on brow and
body hairs, noting tip sharpness, ease of grip, and the overall experience of
using them. We kept track of when we pinched ourselves with a pair more than
once or when we struggled to grab the hair we were after.

Our favorite tweezers have supersharp tips, and come from the only company
offering a free service to keep them that way.

For plucking hairs, the Tweezerman Slant tweezers—Wirecutter’s pick for the last
decade—are the best. Their sharp tips grip the smallest and finest hairs just as
well as pricier pairs, and they are covered by Tweezerman’s free lifetime
sharpening service, which could come in handy should the tips of your pair
become dulled. These tweezers come in a variety of colors and styles that other
brands lack.
Over a week of test plucking, the Tweezerman Slant pair outperformed pairs from
cheaper brands. Their sharp tips open and close widely with little resistance,
making the motion of getting under a hair to pluck as easy as it can be.
Tweezerman tied in plucking performance with spendier brands, and even
outperformed the Rubis Swiss Cross Classic Tweezers, which were so sharp that
they were prone to pinching our skin.

Tweezerman is the only brand that offers a free lifetime sharpening service, or
any sharpening service at all. You won’t be buying a new pair every few years
just to get a better grip on your hairs.
From rose gold to purple leopard, these tweezers come in the widest variety of
colors and styles we’ve seen, plus the traditional standbys black and silver.
Fun colors aren’t just smile-inducing: They can also help you spot the small
tool in a crowded medicine cabinet or makeup bag.

Several Wirecutter staffers have been using Tweezerman Slant tweezers for years,
and have nothing but good things to say about their utility and longevity. We’ve
noticed an issue with counterfeit versions of these tweezers popping up on
Amazon. We recommend buying from a reputable seller.
FLAWS BUT NOT DEALBREAKERS
The protective cap that comes with the Tweezerman Slant is small, clear, and
easy to lose. Most tweezer caps are like this, though.

Tweezerman’s sharpening service requires you to mail in your tweezers, and then
wait up to two months to get them back. Then again, no other brand offers this
service.

For removing foreign objects or ingrown hairs, try the Tweezerman Ingrown
Hair/Splintertweeze. Although we haven’t pitted them against other pointed-tip
tweezers, between Tweezerman’s sharpening program and our staff’s experience,
we’re confident that they’ll serve you well. They have a pointy tip ideal for
digging, are sharp and can be kept sharp with the Tweezerman service. Wirecutter
founder Brian Lam keeps them on hand to dig out the occasional sea urchin spine
or other foreign object, and said that their wide grip is helpful for holding
the tweezers steady.
HOW TO AVOID COUNTERFEIT TWEEZERS
Plenty of lesser-known brands sell Tweezerman Slant–like tweezers for lower
prices. (We’ve tested one such pair and found it inferior to our top pick.)
However, a bigger issue is that some companies appear to be selling
Tweezerman-branded Slant lookalikes online. It’s easy to buy these by mistake
when ordering through third-party sellers, as one Wirecutter staffer found when
she received a fake pair after shopping on Amazon. We recommend buying directly
from Tweezerman or another reputable seller, such as Sephora or Ulta. If you
prefer to shop on Amazon, look for Tweezerman tweezers whose product page is
marked “Ships from and sold by Amazon.”
THE COMPETITION
If you have trouble holding small objects, consider the Tweezerman Wide Grip
Slant Tip. We haven’t tested these, but Amazon reviewers who have arthritis and
bigger hands note that they find the style helpful.
No tweezers among those we tested—except those from Tweezerman—come with a
sharpening program. That said, a couple of other pairs are worth considering:
The Nippes Stainless Steel Slant Pink tweezers performed just as well as our
pick. The supplied protective tip is a longer piece of clear plastic, and
perhaps slightly harder to lose. But these tweezers come in half as many color
choices and don’t come with free sharpening.
The Regine Switzerland Slant Tip tweezers also performed well, and have a long,
red protective tip that would be harder to lose than the Tweezerman’s (but it’s
a little clumsy to get on and off). However, this pair costs twice as much as
our pick.
We also tested some tweezers that we wouldn’t buy:
The Rubis Swiss Cross Classic tweezers were so sharp that we pinched ourselves.
We found the TweezerGuru Professional Stainless Steel Slant Tip tweezers hard to
maneuver around hairs: This pair doesn’t open very wide, and isn’t very springy.
The tips of the Revlon Expert Tweezers Slant Tip are fat and dull, making it
difficult to grasp fine hairs. This pair also took more force to squeeze closed
than any other we tested.
