T-BIRDS CUT DOWN GIANTS

by
Thom Beuning

KENT, Wash.– Lukas Svejkovsky finished with five points, including a hat trick
as the Seattle Thunderbirds came from behind to beat the Vancouver Giants, 6-2,
Saturday at the accesso ShoWare Center. The Thunderbirds finish off their
three-game weekend with a trip to Kennewick Sunday to face the Tri-City
Americans at the Toyota Center.

The game didn’t start well for Seattle (38-17-4-2) as they fell behind, 2-0,
after twenty minutes.  The Giants got first period goals from Tom Cadieux and Ty
Thorpe to take a two-goal lead into the first intermission.

Thunderbirds head coach Matt O’Dette didn’t like how his team came out of the
gate. “That was a slow start. We weren’t executing much of the game plan at
all.” He said part of the reason for the slow start was how a shorthanded
Vancouver team, that was dressing just 16-skaters, came ready to play. “Credit
to them, they played hard. They played well and were thoroughly outworking us
early in the game and it was tough to get our legs under us.”

O’Dette said his team buckled down the rest of the way and it started early in
the second period with the first of Svejkovsky’s three goals, coming just
54-seconds in.  “He’s a game breaker.” O’Dette said of the Pittsburgh Penguins
prospect. “Any given play he can break it open and score for us. He did that
tonight. The last two nights, he’s been electric for us.”

Svejkovsky then set up the tying goal, getting the puck to Sam Knazko who scored
at the 8:10 mark.  56-seconds later Seattle took the lead for good when Coster
Dunn potted his first as a T-bird.  “I just got a puck on a regroup, a nice
cross ice pass from Rybby (Henrik Rybinski), and just kind of put my head down
from there and went to the net.” It was just Dunn’s seventh game with Seattle
this season, but he says he feels like a part of the team. “The boys here have
been great. You don’t really feel excluded or not a part of the team.”

The Thunderbirds would strike for three more goals in the third period to put
the game away. Svejkovsky’s second goal came on a penalty shot at 1:05.  Jared
Davidson’s team leading 31st of the season made it 5-2 at 8:58 and Svejkovsky
got his hat trick goal at 12:40.

After the slow start, O’Dette says his team finished the right way. “Once we hit
our stride a little bit more, we got multiple chances. We’re not completely
satisfied that it wasn’t a sixty-minute effort, but we’re happy with the way we
closed it out.”

After Sunday’s road game in Eastern Washington, the T-birds return home next
Friday to host the Americans. Game time at the accesso ShoWare Center is 7:05
p.m. Tickets are available at tickets.seattlethunderbirds.com

T-BIRD EXTRAS

Seattle’s magic number for clinching home ice advantage in the first round of
the 2022 WHL Playoffs is ten. Any combination of points the T-birds earn and the
Kelowna Rockets fail to earn equaling ten will give them home ice in round one.

In three games against Vancouver this season, Svejkovsky has 11-points on six
goals and five assists.

After being outshot 13-9 in the first period, Seattle outshot Vancouver 38-20
over the final forty minutes.

Jordan Gustafson, Gabe Ludwig and Ryan Gottfried all missed another game with
injury and are listed as day-to-day. Vancouver, dealing with their own injury
issues, dressed just 16-skaters.

Tyrel Bauer played in his 175th WHL game Saturday, all with the Thunderbirds.
