EU REGULATORY COMPLIANCE LANDSCAPE: TAKING AN INTEGRATED AND RISK-BASED APPROACH
TO THE SURGE OF NEW REGULATIONS

Plenary Panel

With the recent wave of new regulations, compliance officers are not only having
to make sure they are up to date with new requirements in the EU and member
states, but also to gain near-technical knowledge of many specialties.

 * Landscape: What does the current regulation climate mean for businesses
   operating in the EU?
 * Trends: How are industries responding to the evolving requirements, and the
   incurred changes and costs?
 * International view: What can we learn from regulatory compliance practices
   internationally?
 * Integrated approach: How can compliance officers take an integrated approach

The entire business needs to be involved in agreeing its core values, and how it

and keep its integrity.

How can an organisation establish or update an ethical and moral framework to

 * ABC: Reviewing anti-bribery and corruption policies and measuring their

WHISTLEBLOWING REGULATION 5 YEARS ON: A REFLECTION ON IMPLEMENTATION
EFFECTIVENESS AND THE PROGRESS MADE

Breakout A1

Track A: Regulatory Compliance

Five years ago, the EU Whistleblower Directive was passed, to help protect
whistleblowers and facilitate the disclosure of information on illegal
activities, corruption and other wrongdoing. Since updated, and implemented in
most European countries, the directive has seen deviations in how it was
interpreted across the EU.

 * Divergent trends: Exploring the trends we have seen in the implementation of
the directive including regulatory oversight, reporting obligations and
responsible persons, as well as record-keeping requirements.
 * Regulation in practice: Have businesses engaged sufficiently - and at all
levels - with the new regulatory requirements, and are the new policies truly
working to encourage the disclosure of illegal activities?
 * Trust and efficiency: How can businesses make employees trust and engage with
the system? What needs to happen to give a face to the hotline, and to make
   all tools user-friendly?
 * Following up on alerts: How can organisations ensure they have the resources
to follow up on alerts?  What are the implications for multinationals, and
how can data protection be ensured in the scenario of an investigation?

REGULATING AI: HOW CAN WE ENSURE AI IS USED IN AN ETHICAL AND UNBIASED WAY?

Plenary Panel

Hosted in partnership with Skillsoft

The landmark AI Act just passed in the EU, finally setting the foundation of the
first major AI regulation law in the world. Creating a European Artificial
Intelligence Board to promote national cooperation and ensuring compliance, the
Act is differing from the UK’s much more flexible stance with its “proinnovation
approach to AI”. Ethics and avoiding bias are at the heart of the precautions
around AI regulation – what does this all mean for compliance professionals.

• EU AI Act: How can the compliance community prepare for the AI Act? What does
it day about the current regulatory trends in the EU?

• Data protection: How can we guarantee we use AI whilst protecting our business
and customers? What frameworks and processes need to be in place to ensure
transparency and explainability, compatibility of purpose and fairness?

• Risks assessments: What is best practice to conduct effective AI risk
assessments? Who can the compliance team collaborate with in doing so?

• Skills and knowledge: Just like the EU is setting up a new independent board
of experts to advise on AI regulation and requirements, how can compliance
officers strike the right balance of personal knowledge and expert consultation?

THE COMPLIANCE OFFICER OF 2024: EVOLVING TO ETHICS-BASED PRACTICE

The compliance function is evolving as the regulatory landscape changes, and our
society is starting to generally evolves towards putting ethics at the heart of
business decisions and practices. Compliance is no longer just a check-box
exercise, and compliance officers are having to adapt and learn new skills to
ensure they understand what the requirements mean for their organisations, and
what are the risks.

• Compliance role: What does it actually mean to be a compliance officer? Where
does the role start and stop?

• Skills: Without being specialists, how can compliance officers ensure they
have enough specific knowledge to understand legal requirements – specifically
to do with new technologies?

• Collaboration: How can compliance teams collaborate with specialist teams
within their organisations to implement programmes?

• More with less: With the remit of compliance officers broadening and becoming
more complex – and with the increase in new regulations – work is increasing
whilst budgets are shrinking. What can we truly do to keep abreast of change,
and ensure ethical and compliant businesses?

• Technology: What is the role of technology in modernising compliance?
