FRIDAY NFL PRESEASON ROUNDUP: EVAN MCPHERSON STILL KICKING

In Cincinnati’s preseason opener, kicker Evan McPherson was in midseason form as
he connected for field goals of 23, 58 and 56 yards in the second quarter of the
Bengals’ 36-23 loss to the Arizona Cardinals on Friday night.

If the former Fort Payne High School standout’s 58-yard field goal had come in
the regular season, it would have tied the record for the longest in franchise
history. McPherson made a 58-yarder in a 15-10 victory over the Denver Broncos
on Dec. 19, 2021.

Only one other Cincinnati kicker has made a field goal longer than 55 yards –
Randy Bullock in a 38-35 loss to the Miami Dolphins on Dec. 22, 2019.

McPherson made nine field goals of at least 50 yards as a rookie in 2021, which
was more than any other kicker had made in his career with the Bengals. He then
made three more in the postseason after Cincinnati had had one field goal of at
least 50 yards in its entire playoff history.

The Arizona-Cincinnati game was one of five NFL preseason contests on Friday
night:

· Quarterback Desmond Ridder threw two touchdown passes in his first pro game,
and the second one with 90 seconds to play lifted the Atlanta Falcons to a 27-23
victory over the Detroit Lions.

· Suspended for the first six games of the 2022 regular season (with the NFL
seeking more on appeal), Deshaun Watson started at quarterback for the Cleveland
Browns in a 24-13 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars. Watson completed 1-of-5
passes for 7 yards, and his series ended with two punts and a fumble.
Cleveland’s star turned out to be fifth-round running back Jerome Ford. The
former Alabama ball-carrier produced 102 yards from scrimmage and two touchdowns
in his first pro outing.

· The New York Jets scored a touchdown with 16 seconds to play, roaring back
after the Philadelphia Eagles reached the end zone with 1:40 remaining, to post
a 24-21 victory.

· While Green Bay’s Aaron Rodgers watched, San Francisco used its starting
quarterback and got a 76-yard touchdown pass from Trey Lance in the 49ers’ 28-21
victory over the Packers.
