Do you even need chapters? How long should a chapter be? Should you title your

a good cliffhanger? How do you write chapters with multiple character points of
view? So much to discuss for such a small topic!

satire and offense, or is all religious satire inherently offensive on some
level?

For superheroes to seem heroic, we want them to fight evil while remaining above
the moral fray. But in many cases—in comics and comic movies—superheroes cross
moral lines. How do we ethically evaluate when heroes act immorally, like Batman
torturing villains, Wanda holding an entire town hostage, or Wonder Woman
sexually assaulting a mind-controlled bystander? How can we talk about these
stories in a way that holds heroes accountable?

Can Science Fiction Be Magical Realism?
Harbor II
(60 mins)
 *
   Alexander Jablokov (moderator)
 *
   Amy Kucharik
 *
   JeffWarner
 *
   Laurence Raphael Brothers
 *
   R.E. Carr

Fiction, Literature,
Panel,
Fantasy,
Guest,
Science Fiction,
Friday,

The genre of magical realism is a liminal space between realism and traditional
fantasy. By presenting without comment an antimonious view of reality, it allows
for fantastic elements without breaking the verisimilitude of a realistic
setting. By that definition, much near-future science fiction might qualify as
magical realism. What stories might qualify as the SF version of magical
realism? Is it useful to define these stories as something separate from
traditional SF, and if so, why?

Considering Climate Change in Your Worldbuilding
Marina II
(60 mins)
 *
   Jeff Hecht
 *
   Kevin McLaughlin
 *
   Marisca Pichette (moderator)
 *
   Sarena Straus
 *
   Vincent Docherty, FN

Writing / Publishing,
Panel,
Science—Physical,
Friday,

In 2016, Amitav Ghosh wrote, "Climate change is like death, no one wants to talk
about it", but climate change is an unavoidable fact of the near future. Any
novel set in the next century must take it into account. Even if your novel is
not a story about climate change, the changing temperatures and rising sea
levels will impact your setting and worldbuilding. Let's talk about what might
happen and how it should be reflected in your work.

   Romie Stott (moderator)
 *
   steven popkes

Real World (Science, History, ...),
Panel,
Science Fiction,
Friday,

In many SF stories distant colonies or space stations are difficult for their
parent states to properly govern, fostering separatist independence movements.
Travel distance, communications lag, self-sustainability, and other factors can
affect the viability of these movements. Is it really possible to cut the cord?
How do you get around factors like limited gene pools, equipment maintenance,
and lack of resources? How would trade and diplomacy with the parent state and
other colonies work?

Panel,
Movies / TV / Theater,
Friday,

Russell T. Davies, the showrunner of Doctor Who when it returned in 2005, is
back in charge. The new David Tennent episodes played to large audiences around
the world & Ncuti Gatwa made a brilliant regeneration. How do you think the

 *
   F. Brett Cox
 *
   Josh Gauthier
 *
   Kacey Ezell
 *
   Lyndsay Ely

Fiction, Literature,
Panel,
Science Fiction,
Friday,

As a genre, the Weird West is what happens if you hybridize the classic American
Western story with SFFH elements. The thing is, the classic Western story is
already such a highly stylized, ahistorical, fantastical version of history that
it's essentially a genre in and of itself. That said, what can Weird West
stories do that classic Western stories can't? Are the SFFH elements in Weird
West tales just window dressing, or do they add anything substantive to the
form?

Carlton
(60 mins)
 *
   Amy Kucharik

Music (Filk, Folk),
Workshop,
Guest,
Humor,
Friday,

Parodic songs have a great and long history, in and out of the filk world. But
how do you exactly go about writing one, and how do you ensure it does what you
want it to do (whether that's to crack people up, make them think, or both)? In
this workshop, we'll listen to a couple examples of parody songs, examine what
makes them great, and then apply those characteristics to our own songwriting
attempts and share them as time permits. Come with a parody idea, a partially
completed parody, or just an open mind. Instruments welcome but not required.
Watch out, Weird Al!

As a longtime book collector, when do you realize you’ve got a “collection?” How
do you organize what you’ve got, decide what and how to acquire, whether it’s an
“investment” or labor of love, and, ultimately, its fate (sale or bequest)? We
can discuss how we may focus on authors, genres, eras, publishers, formats
(vintage paperbacks, “limited editions,” etc.).

We all use the term "hard science fiction," but what is it and what are the
boundaries? Must these stories conform rigorously to our current understanding
of physics/biology etc, or can the author make reasonable (or at least
plausible-sounding) extrapolations? What do we do with FTL? If we allow
divergence from what is known, where is the borderline between science fiction
and fantasy? Where does this leave the sub-genre science fantasy? Panelists will
discuss these ideas with reference to published works.

A good fight scene can improve the pacing of your novel, raise the stakes for
your character, and add immediacy to your writing. But how do you do it well?
How do you determine what weapons your character would use and how do you
convincingly portray that? Short of studying martial arts for ten years and
achieving a black belt, how do you research the combat skills so essential to a
pulse-pounding action scene?

Mary Shelley created one of the first science fiction novels in 1818, but for
most of the 19th century and on into the early 20th century SFFH short stories
were the dominant form for the genre. Authors as diverse as Ambrose Bierce, Mark
Twain, and W.E.B. DuBois all wrote stories that could be classified as SFFH.
We'll explore their works as well as the works of others that contributed to the
genre and discuss how they laid the background for the explosion of science
fiction in the early 20th century.

Speculative evolution isn't just a sub-genre of speculative fiction. It's also
an artistic movement that imagines and explores how biological development in
our world might have changed if things had happened a little differently. What
if we had more (or less) water on our planet? What if our single moon were
actually two moons, if land bridges formed in different areas, or if early
asteroids hit in different places (or not at all!)? How would our speculative
creatures have evolved? Our panelists let their imaginations--and hypothetical
animals--run wild.

Social Topics,
Saturday,
Two scholarly papers:

The Deathless Men were characters in V for Vengeance, a 1942 boys paper series
in The Wizard, which portrayed the brutality and violence of the war in an
unprecedented manner, arguing that it was preparing the youth for the horror of
war. This paper looks at this lesser known serial. The Deathless Men, broken,
injured, tortured escapees from concentration camps, instill fear, wreak havoc,
and kill a wide range of Nazis, exacting revenge for their vividly portrayed
crimes and unremitting in their determination to unhinge the regime.

The Holocaust in Comics takes a broad look at the portrayal of the Holocaust,
considering those comic book works that focus solely on the subject, mainstream
comics that touch upon the situation, and European comics that include them as
part of their story—making the argument for challenging when the comic goes
astray and championing the stories that capture the imagination, sharing history
through the potential power of comics.

LGBTQ+ characters are no longer invisible on the screen. While there has been an
obvious shift in popular culture, we still have a long way to go in the fight
for appropriate representation in film, television, and fiction. The surge in
LGBTQ+ representation has brought with it a surge of creators exploiting our
desire to see a more realistic representation of diverse stories, often writing
characters who are either caricatures or characters in relationships without
being fleshed out appropriately. We'll discuss good and bad examples of LGBTQ+
characters. How do they help or hurt popular conception, including self
perception, of flesh-and-blood LGBTQ people?

Many representations of alien psychology fall into two categories. Species
members are either uniformly labeled with a simple characteristic (typical of
non-protagonists), or are the singular representatives of the species to break
from that mold (mostly protagonists). For example, hostile or aggressive species
(there are 646 of the former and 325 of the latter listed on aliens.fandom.com)
are often descended from predators (think Kzinti). Other species are variously
acquisitive (Ferengi), emotionless (Vulcan), cowardly, formal ... Let's
concentrate on discussing more subtle representations of alien psychology.

like dialect and punctuation to narrative choices like POV, this panel will
discuss how to find the authorial voice that best fits you.
