July 15, 2019 - Special Edition About the Civic Update June 28, 2019 June 14, 2019 May 24, 2019 May 17, 2019 May 11, 2019 Subscribe THE CIVIC UPDATE IS A WEEKLY EMAIL DEDICATED TO KEEPING YOU INFORMED ABOUT THE THINGS THAT ARE HAPPENING IN CHICAGO’S CIVIC AND POLITICAL ARENA. OUR GOAL IS TO BE AN EQUIPPING PRESENCE FOR THE CHURCH AS WE SEEK TO PURSUE RIGHTEOUSNESS (&) JUSTICE IN OUR CITY. ABOUT Our faith. Our City. Our Resource. The Civic Update is dedicated to keeping you informed about the things that are happening in Chicago’s civic and political arena. Our goal is to be an equipping presence for the church as we seek to pursue righteousness (&) justice in our city. Chicago is entering a pivotal time in its history. The city faces significant challenges from revenue generation and budget deficits, to an education crisis, to rebuilding trust in the policing and judicial systems, to government reform. As the next administration takes the reigns, it is clear that while government must be one of the key drivers of the process of finding and implementing solutions to these problems, there will need to be an unprecedented level of civic engagement and community cohesion. No institution in Chicago is better positioned than the church to contribute to this rise in civic engagement and shepherd communities through the complex conversations and difficult decisions that lay ahead, while holding government accountable in meaningful ways. Biblical Christians in Chicago - those of us who are truly seeking to live out of the scriptures - desperately want Jesus Christ to be Lord over every part of our lives...even our political lives. And it can be difficult, often discouraging, to bring Biblical values to the political conversations in Chicago. We live in a “Democrat stronghold” and it is almost a foregone conclusion that candidates with Biblical views of marriage, gender, and sanctity of life don’t stand a chance in our single-party system. Yes, we have learned to work with our elected leaders to pursue other values that are equally Biblical and equally important to who we are as Christians; things like social justice, economic equity, and racial equality. This is exactly what makes it so important that Biblical Christians take an organized approach to engagement in this in this new era of Chicago’s civic and political life. In a single party political system, we can afford to not tow the party line. We can afford to rise above our partisan affiliations and allow a clear prophetic voice to ring out from the church. Civic engagement is a cluster of individual efforts and organizational activities oriented toward making a difference in the civic life of communities. It involves developing the combination of knowledge, skills, values and motivations to make that difference. It means promoting the quality of life in a community, through both political and non-political processes. The church was, at one time, the leading engine for civic impact in Chicago, driving advances in civil rights, housing equity, and community development. Many of the traditional tactics, structures, and processes that sustained previous efforts have lost their efficacy as times, society and the church have changed. But the potential of the church has never been greater. The Civic Update is here to help unlock that potential by giving leaders like you insight into what is happening in the civic and political arena. Powered by Squarespace Archive
