API Usage:Class Chat is a multi-device, cloud-based software that currently
allows Teachers and Students to communicate with each other. The users are
sorted by the classes they are enrolled in, automatically through a single sign
in. Class Chat does this through utilization of the Aeries REST API, and the
Google Firebase Database. Our “Users” consist of Admins, Teachers and students
currently.What we do exactly is we use a User’s sign in information, and make a
call to the Aeries API* to pull several data endpoints. We only pull the
endpoints we need to have a user create/join a chatroom, and nothing more.
Once the information is collected, it is saved to a user’s device, not our
servers, to maintain privacy.# Privacy:## Data usage:In the case that we do need
to use data with the database, we do so in a way that maintains privacy.
Specifically, the id that denotes a chatroom for a classroom is made up of a
hash from the course and the period number put together. This way, users always
get routed to the corresponding chatroom but the database never gets to see what
the course or period numbers are.## Log in information:The user login email and
password are used to log into accounts and added to our database. While the
email is required to sign in, we hash the password so no one (not even the
owners) can access user passwords.There is no account creation needed for the
usage of Class Chat. All people in the school district with a school Gmail and
password can sign and use Class Chat with no admin action necessary.#
Security:The database can only be accessed (read & write) by logged in users
through security rules. Beyond the security rules, Firebase is certified under
major privacy and security standards.
