ARTIST TALK: BIRDO

Recently we had the pleasure of sitting down for a conversation with birdO, the
Toronto-based artist behind the captivating two-story mural that backdrops the
10 DEAN café and bar in Waverley’s Lobby Lounge. birdO’s Waverley piece is
titled "The Surreal Wolf”, which has not only received acclaim from our
residents and 10 DEAN customers but has also resonated with birdO's dedicated
fan base and the broader Toronto community. Throughout our conversation, we
explored birdO’s sources of inspiration, his deep-rooted love for the College &
Spadina area, and the formative experiences that shaped his artistic journey
during his youth.

Q: What made you start creating murals?

I am competitive by nature, always driven to push my boundaries and explore new
horizons in the world of art. When I first started seeing murals at art
festivals around the globe, I was captivated by the scale and grandeur of these
creations. I vividly remember thinking to myself, I don't know how I'm going to
paint big murals like that, but I want to figure it out.

Q: What was your introduction into the art world?

In my past life I was very blessed to be an award-winning graphic designer.
Prior to that I had spent several years painting graffiti. Through my formal
training and lessons learned street level, I feel like I'm lucky to have a
pretty good pulse on the important legacy artists and designers from our
historical textbooks, while also appreciating modern practicing artists that
disrupt and disturb.



Q: What was your inspiration behind the mural at Waverley?

I wanted my work to fit seamlessly as the art collection and design cues in
Waverley are top tier. My primary source of inspiration revolved around
maximizing the effective use of space. Given that each surface posed distinctive
challenges, it became crucial for my 'Moon Wolf' to elegantly cascade over the
coffee bar in a naturally flowing manner.

Q: What is your favourite feature of Waverley?

I maintain a strict commitment to sobriety and adhere to a disciplined approach
to my dietary choices. However, my one indulgence is coffee, and I occasionally
consume four or more cups in a day, even including nighttime. The presence of
boutique coffee offerings in the lobby resonates with me significantly and
stands out as a favourite feature of Waverley.

Q: What are some of your favourite artists from Toronto and internationally?

Among my favourite artists from Canada are Ness Lee from Toronto and David
Altmejd from Montreal, while I also greatly admire Donald Glover from the United
States. I find each of them to be exceptionally thought-provoking, original, and
groundbreaking.

Q: What do you like about the College & Spadina neighbourhood?

During my time in Toronto, I've accumulated quite a collection of memorable
experiences at The Comfort Zone. These days, I'm particularly fond of The Little
Jerry, which is conveniently located just around the corner. It's worth noting
that my paint supply store, Toronto Collective, is conveniently located right
next door.

Q&A WITH DESIGNAGENCY’S FOUNDING PARTNER ANWAR MEKHAYECH

DesignAgency, an award-winning international design studio, was responsible for
designing the eclectic interiors of The Waverley.

Fitzrovia discussed the interior design strategy with founding partner Anwar
Mekhayech, who brings an astute international perspective to every project he
leads.



Q: What was DesignAgency's role in designing The Waverley?

We were responsible for designing The Waverley’s public spaces, as well as the
interior features and finishes in the apartments. We also contributed to The
Waverley’s brand identity work as well as the restoration of the interior of the
historic Silver Dollar Room. The goal was to help establish a distinctive
boutique rental community with interiors and branding that match the vibrancy of
its exciting and iconic downtown locale.

Q: Explain DesignAgency's rationale behind key interior design aspects featured
in The Waverley?

We tapped into our expertise for designing sophisticated and comfortable hybrid
spaces — places where people live, work and play. When you enter The Waverley,
you feel like you’ve discovered a hidden gem. The artful interiors share the
best aspects of a boutique design hotel, private members’ club and co-working
space, all under one roof. Tenants and locals congregate comfortably in the
double-height Lobby Lounge to enjoy solo or social, casual or organized
activities.

We outfitted amenity spaces with designer fixtures, finishes and furnishings,
creating memorable places to work or socialize. Art by some of Toronto’s most
exciting contemporary artists, including Thrush Holmes and birdO (Jerry Rugg),
further animates the spaces with bold colours and energy.



Q: Walk us through your design decisions for specific elements of the space.

We designed the suites as personal sanctuaries for young urbanites, choosing a
natural palette and adding warmth with wood tones. The finishes are
sophisticated enough to live with just as they are but also serve as a perfect
backdrop for residents to add their own personality through accessories and
treasured belongings. In the bathrooms, we opted for high-contrast schemes and
textures that add interest and warmth. Dark gray accents and stone finishes look
current but also have a timeless quality.

The double-height Lobby Lounge is energetic and lively. With features such as 10
DEAN, the day-to-night café-bar, a sweeping staircase, massive custom mural by
artist birdO (Jerry Rugg) and ample seating, the space is filled with the
constant hum of activity and has unmistakable “It spot” vibes.

We introduced a mix of seating styles to create welcoming spaces that
accommodate groups and individuals with equal ease. On the mezzanine level,
individual break out zones and a mini amphitheater provide the flexibility to
host a variety of events such as meetings, talks and screenings. The fireplace
lounge incorporates a bookshelf wall and offers a quiet, cozy destination. 

The Waverley’s Fitness Centre is located on the building’s penthouse level and
boasts stellar views of Toronto’s downtown. To honour Fitzrovia’s signature
commercial-grade gym brand, The Temple, we configured the gym so that users feel
motivated by both the city and the space around them. We used industrial brick
and steel to play up the urban setting but balanced these materials with light
wood accents in the Yoga Room.

As for the colour scheme, deep blues, and dark grey offset with shades of pale
pink and warm brass tones create an eclectic mix. We used richly textured
materials throughout the common spaces to add tangible layers to the aesthetic,
including an extruded brick pattern in the lobby and raw exposed concrete
columns. Plant life introduces soothing shades of green.



Q: What was your design strategy to revamp the historic Silver Dollar Room?

Since it’s a designated heritage site, the historic Silver Dollar Room was
completely rebuilt using historical elements that had been salvaged and stored
during the construction process. The original bar, terrazzo floor, murals and
exterior sign were meticulously restored and reinstalled, through the
collaborative effort of DesignAgency, GBCA Architects and Clifford Restoration.
New elements in the space, including classic materials such as wood paneling and
brick, play on the look and feel of old jazz clubs, while concealed LED accents
and other modern lighting help set the mood and update the experience. Our
design recaptures the spirit of the legendary music venue but adds significant
comfort, style, and atmosphere upgrades.



Q: What sets The Waverley apart from other purpose-built rental buildings?

From the distinct character of the building by Kirkor Architects, to its
colourful interiors, The Waverley speaks of great design and community, echoing
not only the vibrancy of the city, but the neighbourhood and its diverse
residents. The amenities, lobby café-bar, art and fitness area are all designed
and curated to enhance comfort and enjoyment. For those who call The Waverley
home, we hope our design enhances daily life by thoughtfully anticipating their
needs, big and small.
