Cari is devastated when her husband Martin leaves her for another woman.
Her friend, wide-boy Nigel, persuades her to get a bank loan and buy a house to
do up for rental, but it soon becomes apparent that he's contravened every rule
and regulation in the book.
She's lumbered with an infuriating mother, a friend who's permanently pregnant,
and a friend who may be pregnant - but not by her husband - and her neurotic
sister Juliette is on the verge of a nervous breakdown.
Her first tenant, Gary, turns out to be a drug addict on benefit. He moves in a
dozen mates and barricades Cari in the flat while the police are battering the
door down, ensuring that she's arrested along with the squatters.
And then her estranged husband announces that he wants to sell the house she's
living in.
Could life get any worse?
At least her love life begins to get interesting. Pursued by spinsterish Henry,
she has a fling with TV interviewer Guy, and then there's closet opera fan Ben
the Builder, reassuring and more than presentable.
Cari writes a wish list: (a) Make some money (b) Lose some weight (c) Find
someone to have a grand passion with and (d) Become so rich and successful that
Martin is consumed with jealousy.
And suddenly, all her wishes begin to be answered...

Martin – Hope by the time you find this note, you’ll have settled into your new
life. We both know we’re doing the right thing but I want you to understand that

Bastard! Bastard! Bastard! I watched Martin load the last cardboard box on to
the back of the van and imagined what he’d look like if I shot him. I was just
picturing him staggering backwards, blood spurting, when he smiled a last smarmy
smile at the driver and turned a weary, sad one on me.
‘Cari, I—’ he began, as if he were in a made-for-television drama or capable of
human emotion.
‘Take care!’ I interrupted brightly, although actually it would have suited me
best if he’d been pulverized in a twenty-car pile-up on the M25. ‘Speak to you
soon.’ And I kissed his cheek, noted with quiet glee the confusion in his eyes,
turned and marched back up the steps to shut the shiny red door of the marital
home behind me.
Pausing for a moment to see if I was going to fall into a crumpled heap, and
finding that – strangely – I wasn’t, I took up my position in the window to
watch the van leave. As it pulled away, Martin gave a last, wounded,
I-have-been-much-maligned look at the house and slid behind the wheel of his
pretentiously numbered car. Then he drove away.
Martin gone.
I sat quite still on my window-seat – the scene of many a fine emotional crisis
before this one – and waited to be desolate. Nothing happened at all.
Martin has left me.
I have been abandoned.
I live on my own.
I am an ex.
Nothing.
I tried an experimental gulp, just to see if any of the previously never-ending
supply of tears – which had gushed all over the place at regular intervals
yesterday – were on standby to burst out of my eyes but no. In fact, I found the
smile I had created with which to bid him farewell felt quite comfortable on my
face. And apart from a king-size hangover, which was sending intermittent
signals to my shrivelled brain urging me to throw up, I felt very little pain at
all.
How extraordinary.
Emotions are funny like that, though. Mine never do what I expect. I’ve always
blamed it on the larger-than-average helping of loopy genes handed down to me
(see later ramblings on mother and father) but in this case I think it was plain
inexperience. I mean, all I knew about a Major Break-up of a Serious Long-term
Relationship was that it gave me an instant ten points on the
How-Stressed-Are-You? scale and all sorts of unwanted attention from my family.
(Another ten points.)
Well, how would you know until you do it? And other people’s examples can be
dubious. My mother threw a lavish party with salmon twirls and champagne after
she ran away from my father, whereas Auntie Maud, upon discovering Uncle
Geoffrey packing his bags, slit her wrists in the bath.
A veritable queen of the mood swing at the best of times, I’d tried to take a

The third novel of Wenham-Jones I have read and sadly it just didn't improve for
me; there were some funny parts peppered throughout which made me smile but then
there were cheesey far fetched parts that made me cringe.
The story didn't get me gripped or keep me interested at all and there were a
fair few characters, Nigel, Neil and Nick just got me totally confused and I
still don't know who is who!
I won't be reading any more from this author - although I don't think there are
any more?

This is chick lit just for women, right? Wrong! I'm a bloke and I thoroughly
enjoyed the chapter after chapter of the helter skelter ride that Cari goes
through in Raising the Roof. Anyone who has ever tried being a property lessor,
or even lessee, will instantly recognize the Ride of the Valkheries involved.
However, the fantastic touch of Wenham-Jones tickles your humor buds constantly
throughout the book. The pace particularly is terrific, and you wanna be in
there helping Cari to pour herself yet another glass of sauvignon to help ease
the strain. This is a marvelous antidote for the spirit if you a looking for a
good tonic. Enjoy.

...and from the very first page. Raising he Roof is a captivating blend of
pin-prick sharp, intelligent humour, hilarious calamities, and a diet that even
a derr brain like me could stick to, if it wasn't for my empathy with Cari's
main lifestyle philosophy of going to bed and drinking wine - by the bucket, if
possible - once the going gets tough. And quite right too - when you've got a
irritating mother, a barking mad sister and a dubious character like Nigel in
your life. What's really special about this book however, is that it's
different. Not a trendy London wine bar or Manolo in sight. Instead we're taken
down the highways and byways of property renovation, ably guided by a cast of
non-stereotpical chrcters, from Ben, the opera loving builder to hapless Henry,
manager of the gloriously named Broadrange foods. But it isn't just high jinks
on the scaffolding; Jane Wenham-Jones' handling of mental illness is both
sensitive and thought provoking. A delight. Can't wait fo her next.
