Donald Miller's "How to Grow a Small Business" is a great resource for
entrepreneurs who want practical advice on how to grow their businesses. The
book is easy to read, digest and implement. The advice has an immediate impact
on growing my business, and can do the same for yours as well.
I liked how thoughtfully the book was organized using the metaphor of the
business as an airplane, with the parts of the airplane each relating to the
essential parts needed to grow your business, including leadership (cockpit),
sales and marketing (engines), products (wings), operations (body), and finance
(fuel). The section on cash flow management was particularly helpful to me as a
marketer since it's not often included in business guides for marketing
professionals.
One of my favorite things about this book is how Miller draws on his own
personal experience. He knows what he's talking about - he was already a
best-selling author before diving into the world of business consulting. His
insights and guidance are based on real-life experience, which makes them all
the more valuable and relatable.
Another thing I appreciate about Miller's approach is how he challenges
misconceptions about what types of businesses can benefit from structured,
repeatable processes. He argues that processes can benefit almost any type of
business, even creative ones. And he provides solid frameworks for each part of
your business, using plenty of examples to back up his point. These frameworks
are proving to be invaluable to me.
If you’re an entrepreneur who wants a smart, inspiring guide to taking your
businesses to the next level, I recommend "How to Grow a Small Business." It's
conversational, engaging, and provides actionable guidance you won't want to
miss.

At first I bought the audiobook for this one. After listening to the entire book
like 3 times, I bought the hardcover and have been reading and putting pieces of
this into action in my own business.

I really love the concepts that come from Donald Miller. His methodologies and

super easy to read in terms of the written content with areas that I like to
take action on immediately and some to sit and ponder. With examples of how the
concepts may work for a range of different businesses (both product and service)
it brings things to life.
However - for some reason, this book says that it will include colour highlight
the various areas of the Sales Story pitch and the colour sections have been
printed in black and white. Not too bad for the stronger colours but the yellow
is now really difficult to see and left me a little disappointed as I was
expecting it to deliver on all it's promises.

business owner - the artist, the entrepreneur, and the organizer - and sagely
observes that none of us fulfills all three. So here, in sequence, are the six
'hooks' upon which his own, hugely successful business - from under a million to
something like $18 million in seven years - has been built: a practical,
economics-driven mission, marketing and sales "engines", product optimization,
operations, and cash flow. All with the templates (accessible online) to build
out the business' "flight plan". This is easy to grasp, clear and immediately
implementable.
I've been an artistic director, a coach, and an entrepreneur, and lean naturally
towards those areas, so the back half of the book - how to test and hone your
product offerings, how to create (and eliminate) business processes, and how to
organize your "at a glance" snapshots to run the financial side - is pure gold.
For the 'organizers', it will be the front half - the foundations - that will
catapult you to greater success.

I have been a small business owner almost 15 years. I have a good thing going
but there are areas where I am perpetually stuck and simply don't bother with
because it is too big an effort. I tripped on to How To Grow Your Small Business
and honestly, it is perfection! I have flown through it - it is highlighted,
dog-eared...and in the past 2 weeks I have made changes that are already showing
me results. It is remarkable. Sometimes you just need something presented in a
simple, easy-to-consume format, which is exactly what this book is. I will be
gifting this to all small business owners I know. HIGHLY recommend.
