QUICK REFERENCE

(IOM)

The main intergovernmental organization concerned with migration, established in
1951 to assist in resettling many millions of people displaced from their homes
and habitats by wars in many parts of the world in the preceding decades. It is
based in Geneva. In 2005, it had 109 member states and 24 states with observer
status. IOM is dedicated to promoting humane and orderly migration. It provides
services and advice to governments and migrants, promoting international
cooperation on migration issues and the search for practical solutions to
migration problems. It provides humanitarian assistance to migrants and
internally displaced persons in need, and works closely with governmental,
