BIRTH STORIES IN COLOR

Bianca Pryor felt compelled to share her personal birth experience and how it
interweaves with the birth story and untimely passing of her best friend, Dr.
Shalon Irving. Bianca has led an effort to develop the Believe Her app which
provides peer-to-peer support and resources to Black birthing people. Log in and

GIVING LIFE SHOULD NOT EQUAL A DEATH SENTENCE FOR BLACK WOMEN.

At Dr. Shalon’s Maternal Action Project, we work to remove barriers, biases, and
disparate practices that impede access to equitable, quality care for Black
women and women of color.

Our work is based on the life philosophy of Dr. Shalon:

“I see inequity wherever it exists. I am not afraid to call it by name and work
hard to eliminate it. I vow to create a better earth.”

DR SHALON’S LEGACY

On January 28, 2017, Dr Shalon Irving passed away from complications after
giving birth to her daughter, Soleil. We believe that her death was preventable.

Her passion for justice and trailblazing work in community health inspire us to
fight for a bright future for black mothers—one in which black women are not
dismissed, but are heard, respected, and cared for as equal individuals.

More about Dr Shalon and her legacy →

NO MORE LOST MOTHERS

Black mothers in the U.S. are dying at 3 to 4 times the rate of white mothers.*
Dr Shalon fought for the health of vulnerable communities. Now we’re fighting
for women like her.

We believe structural racism is the core of the issue. If Dr Shalon’s medical
providers had taken action instead of dismissing her concerns, we believe her
tragedy could have been prevented (like 60% of all pregnancy-related deaths).

STANDING UP, SPEAKING OUT

OUR MISSION IS TO INCREASE AWARENESS OF THE BLACK MATERNAL HEALTH CRISIS AND
DEVELOP AND PROMOTE EVIDENCE-BASED STRATEGIES THAT IMPROVE HEALTH OUTCOMES FOR
BLACK BIRTHING PEOPLE AND FAMILIES.

Maternal mortality is a complex issue. We believe change needs to happen at
national and institutional levels, supported by leaders in politics and
healthcare. But we also believe that the most powerful tool a black mother has
is her voice.

That’s why we developed four pillars with which we use as the base of our action
and strategic partnerships. All the work that we do is centered around
Storytelling, Empowerment, Community-Building, and Education.

Our Four Pillars

Use narrative storytelling as a behavior change motivator (using empathy as a
driver so that Black lives are valued, and Black mothers are listened to)

Promote patient empowerment and engagement (community education and training
health navigators)

Create and bolster community supports and safety-nets for Black birthing people
(evaluating, convening, and strengthening the spectrum of care needed from
conception to postpartum)

Health care provider training and education (increase the number of black and/or
culturally competent medical providers in traditional and non-traditional
medical fields, e.g. doulas, midwives)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ms. Irving, Dr Shalon’s mother, tells her story to bring truth and hope to black
mothers and the family members, friends, spouses, and partners who support them.

“In her powerful TEDMED Talk, "How the US medical community fails Black
mothers", Wanda reveals the horrific statistics that feed into the systemic
disparities which result in Black women dying at rates almost 300% higher than
White women. Today, over 3 years later, Wanda is working to promote
accountability measures in postpartum care bills and she invites us to use the
full range of our resources to eliminate inequity.” (TEDMED, 2020)
